The Federal motorway 3 (BAB 3 or A 3) is after the A 7 with 769 kilometers the second longest German motorway and leads from Lower RhineEmmerich on the Dutch border to Passau in Lower Bavaria.

The A3 is an important European traffic route and on some sections it also bears the signs of the European roads:
- The
runs from Amsterdam (Netherlands) via Frankfurt am Main (Germany) and Basel (Switzerland) to Rome (Italy). From the border crossing between the Netherlands and Germany to the Mönchshof motorway triangle, Autobahn 3 also bears this European road number. There are even some double signs along the way: additional 
between the motorway junctions Oberhausen and Kaiserberg, the 
between the Köln-Ost motorway junction and the Heumar triangle as well as the 
between Dreieck Dernbach and Limburg-Nord.

Permanent construction sites
- In the Würzburg area, the expansion to a total of six lanes between the Würzburg-Heidingsfeld exit and the Randersacker bridge has been underway since 2012; commissioning is planned for the end of 2018.[outdated] Until then, there is a considerable risk of traffic jams and longer traffic jams in the entire route area during the day. Particularly in the summer holiday season on the arrival and departure dates of the holidaymakers, especially on Saturdays, major disabilities are to be expected here.

Traffic safety
Blow ups: In midsummer, parts of Lower Bavaria (Regensburg - Deggendorf) are among those areas that are at risk from the dangerous bulges in the concrete pavement slabs due to the heat: Drivers are asked to drive particularly carefully at these sections, speed 80 applies, even without traffic signs. Motorcyclists should avoid these parts of the highway completely.
The Elzer Berg between Limburg and Montabaur is one of the steepest sections of the motorway. Tempo 100 applies here in the direction of Frankfurt. These speed limits are monitored by several permanent speed measuring points.
