Straubing is 318 m high at the foot of the Bavarian Forest in a fertile plain, the Gäuboden.

background

The city, where there was already a settlement, Sorviodurum, in Roman times, is said to have been founded around 1208 by Duke Ludwig of Bavaria. When Lower Bavaria was divided (1353), a line between Bavaria and Straubing was established by Wilhelm and Albrecht, which died out with Johann I in 1425, whereupon a dispute arose over Straubing (Straubing inheritance). In 1429, King Siegmund awarded Straubing to Duke Ernst of Bavaria-Munich. In 1435 Agnes Bernauer was thrown from the Danube bridge into the river here.
