background

Cross gate

Ingolstadt already existed around 806 AD. The city was first mentioned as a Carolingian chamber property in a certificate from Charlemagne, and in 2006 the city celebrated its 1200th anniversary.

Ingolstadt is strategically located (Danube, river crossing and trade routes) and was considered the key to Bavaria in the Middle Ages. The history of the city of Ingolstadt is therefore always the history of its fortifications and the armed conflicts surrounding them.

In 1285 the first city fortification, it was strengthened and expanded as early as 1358.

When the inheritance of Duke Stephen II was divided, the partial duchy of Bavaria-Ingolstadt was created. Ingolstadt thereby became the capital and residence of the Dukes of Bavaria-Ingolstadt.

On March 13, 1472, the first Bavarian university was founded in Ingolstadt under Duke Ludwig the Rich in the course of the Counter Reformation.

After the Landshut War of Succession (1503–1505), Ingolstadt fell to Bavaria-Landshut under the Munich Wittelsbach family. The city received the Renaissance fortress, which in 1546 was tried with luck against the Schmalkaldic League and later in the Thirty Years War. Gustav Adolf Ingolstadt besieged in vain in 1632, while Tilly succumbed to his foot wound inside. The Austrians occupied the fortress twice (1703 and 1742), and Moreau, who was three months earlier, had it razed in 1800.

From 1827 onwards, the fortifications were restored by King Ludwig I and his master builder Leo von Klenze as a classicist fortification (and the fifth city fortification in the sequence). Ingolstadt remained a fortress of the first order until the end of the 19th century the facilities were no longer able to cope with the modern artillery pieces. From 1875 the fortress function was given up, and individual parts of the complex were demolished.

Ingolstadt has had a population of over 100,000 since 1989 and has been the youngest major city in Germany ever since.

Small side note: that Bavarian purity law, the oldest still in force and probably best-known food law in the world, was promulgated in 1516 on St. George's Day in Ingolstadt.

The secret society of Illuminati was also founded in Ingolstadt. The founding date was May 1, 1776, the founder was the philosopher, canon lawyer and at that time the only non-Jesuit university professor Adam Weishaupt. The goals of the secret lodge emerged in the spirit of the Enlightenment at the University of Ingolstadt, which was then shaped by the strictly Catholic Jesuits: the powerful of the world were to be secretly replaced by "enlightened" moral and virtuous people. The order was actually able to gain influence at times, the most important member was Adolph Freiherr Knigge and allegedly also Goethe. In 1784/1785 the secret society was banned in Bavaria, it officially ceased its activities. At least in the movie named after the Illuminati based on the book by Dan Brown, the secret box continues to act conspiratorially up to the present day (wikipedia: Illuminati, Adam Weishaupt).

Also Frankenstein's monster is from Ingolstadt. The fictional character comes from the pen of the English writer Mary Shelley. The story, published anonymously for the first time in 1818, was written under the impression of the sensational effects of electricity and electroplating at the time. The author Shelley lets the figure of the scientist Dr. Viktor Frankenstein at the then Europe-wide important University of Ingolstadt, which had already been moved to Landshut in 1800, created a being from corpse parts and brought it to life with electricity: as a result, the fate of the monster then takes its course. The story is a book that is still widely read today, the first film adaptation dates from 1910, the best known are probably the one from the 1940s with Boris Karloff in the role of the monster. If you like to be scared, or if you just want to experience a different kind of city tour at night: see below activities (wikipedia: Frankenstein, Mary Shelley).
