Nuremberg Airport - Flughafen Nürnberg

Nuremberg Airport
Nuremberg Airport

The international Nuremberg Airport is the second largest airport in Bavaria and the tenth largest in Germany. It is located on the northern edge of Nuremberg. The official name of the airport has been since the end of 2014 Albrecht Dürer Airport Nuremberg.

background

At the end of 2014 the airport was named after the famous painter and son of the city Albrecht Dürer. The new brand "Albrecht Dürer Airport Nürnberg" is intended to increase awareness of the airport. In linguistic usage, however, practically no one speaks of "Albrecht Dürer Airport", unless he or she is employed directly at the airport and speaks in official capacity.

The airport had a total of around 3.5 million passengers in 2016[1] and currently has a runway that is 2,700 m long and 45 m wide. In the past, the airport was a "hub" of the now bankrupt Air Berlin and suffered a significant loss of flights and passengers in the course of the crisis of this airline. In the meantime (2018), however, the trend has been reversed again and the growth is based on several airlines, including classic "low-cost airlines" such as Ryanair, which have settled at Nuremberg Airport.

For passengers, the easy accessibility from the city center (12 minutes by underground from the main train station) and the small size of the airport are particularly advantageous. If you have a direct flight, Nuremberg Airport is definitely recommended, but transfer connections via Frankfurt are often the poorer choice given the train journey times of around two and a half hours with hourly departures. A change via Munich may seem absurd when looking at the map, but business people appreciate this connection because of the shorter distances in Nuremberg and because the luggage is "checked through" from Nuremberg to the destination.
