Berlin Brandenburg Airport - Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg

Berlin Brandenburg Airport

The Berlin Brandenburg Airport "Willy Brandt" is in Schoenefeld South from Berlin. It serves Germany's capital and the surrounding Brandenburg and is Germany's third largest airport in terms of passenger numbers behind Frankfurt and Munich.

After reunification it was clear that the previous Allied airports (Gatow for the British, Tempelhof for the Americans, Tegel for the French and Schönefeld / Johannisthal for the Soviets) would not meet the requirements of modern air traffic in a united Berlin, and therefore a new location was sought for an airport for all of Berlin. The "consensus resolution" of the states of Berlin and Brandenburg as well as the federal government (as the owner of the future airport) provided for all old airports to be shut down and a new airport to be built a little south of the former East German "central airport" Schönefeld. However, this resulted in an almost unbelievable series of bankruptcies, bad luck and breakdowns, so that the new airport was finally able to open almost a decade later on October 31, 2020 instead of in the summer of 2011 as originally planned. Also, contrary to older plans, the old terminal building at Schönefeld was retained - at least for the time being - and currently serves as "Terminal 5" primarily for low-cost airlines such as Ryanair.

getting there

In the run-up to the opening, West Berliners and friends of the old Tegel Airport in particular complained about the relatively remote location. However, this is offset by the fact that there are several quick and reliable travel options on rails. When the expansion of the Dresden railway is expected to go into operation in 2025, the fastest trains from the main train station to the airport will only need 20 minutes - a figure that is absolutely competitive internationally and is not affected by the rigors of road traffic.
