The Hamburg Airport (since November 10, 2016 alsoHamburg Airport Helmut Schmidt) is the 5th largest international airport in Germany with over 17.6 million passengers annually (year 2017) and around 160,000 flight movements and is located in the north of the city between Fuhlsbüttel and Norderstedt.

By plane
Since 2004 there have been direct intercontinental flights to new York (United Airlines) and after Dubai (Emirates Airways). While an Airbus A380 has been in service to / from Dubai since autumn 2018, the direct flight to / from New York has been discontinued.
With the S-Bahn
Hamburg's airport has had a direct connection to the S-Bahn network since the end of 2008. Escalators and elevators take you from the airport terminal to the S-Bahn station. The underground station "Hamburg Airport" is approached by the S1, which is from frond via Altona, Jungfernstieg, Hauptbahnhof and Ohlsdorf. In Ohlsdorf, the train is split on the way to the airport. So watch out: in the front part of the train (the front three cars, at the main train station on the Foyer facing away from the end of the platform). All long-distance connections lead via Hamburg Central Station. Regional trains from the northeast (Sylt, Husum, Itzehoe) end in Altona, from the north Schleswig-Holstein (Kiel, Flensburg, Neumunster) in Hamburg Central Station.
