Hamburg Central Station is an important traffic hub in the national and international Local and long-distance rail traffic as well as the largest train station in Hamburg and one of the most frequented passenger stations in Germany with up to 500,000 passengers per day. In addition to its function as a station for local and long-distance rail transport, it also serves as a transfer station for the Hamburg S-Bahn and the Hamburg U-Bahn, as well as city, regional and long-distance bus services. The station is also used by freight trains to and from Kiel and Denmark above Flensburg drive through. The main train station is next to that Dammtor station, the Altona train station as well as the Harburg train station and the Bergedorf train station one of five train stations in Hamburg with a connection to long-distance rail traffic.

The main train station is in downtown Hamburg. To the southwest of the main train station are the Mönckebergstrasse and Spitaler Strasse shopping streets, followed by the Hamburg City Hall, to the northwest the Inner Alster with the Jungfernstieg and to the east the St. Georg district with the "Lange Reihe", a popular street in Hamburg.

getting there

By train

In addition to arriving by long-distance trains such as ICE, IC / EC and NJ as well as RB, RE and IRE trains in local traffic, the main station is served by all lines of the Hamburg U- and S-Bahn. The main station has two underground stations and two S-Bahn stations:

  • at the 1 Hauptbahnhof Nord underground station hold the lines U2 and U4. The entrances are outside the station building.
  • at the 2 Hauptbahnhof Süd underground station hold the lines U1 and U3. This station is connected to the main station via long pedestrian tunnels.

The two S-Bahn stations are right next to each other. Although they are spatially separated, the numbering of the tracks is continuous.

  • Of the 3 Tracks 1 and 2 (Entrance and exit Lange Reihe / Kirchenallee) the S-Bahn trains go to the northern parts of the city and to frond and Pinneberg. The S-Bahn lines S11, S21 and S31 run via the Lombard Bridge, which runs between the Inner Alster and the Außenaster via Dammtor and Sternschanze stations in the direction of Hamburg Altona and Elbgaustraße stations. Lines S1, S2 and S3 go through the Hamburg inner city tunnel via Jungfernstieg, Landungsbrücken and Reeperbahn in the direction of Altona station and further west.
  • Of the 4 Tracks 3 and 4 (within the station hall) the S-Bahns run to the eastern and southern parts of the city via Berliner Tor and others. to the Hamburg Airport, to Poppenbüttel, Neugraben, Harburg and Bergedorf as well as after Buxtehude and Stade.

By bus

The Hamburg long-distance bus station (Hamburg ZOB) is located next to the main train station, where you operate national as international long-distance bus routes. The long-distance bus station also has heated waiting rooms, customer centers with ticket sales for long-distance bus companies, two fast-food restaurants, a kiosk and sanitary facilities, showers, luggage lockers and telephone booths. Since the long-distance bus station is in close proximity to the main train station, there is a connection to all subway and suburban train lines as well as regional and long-distance transport, and this is served by city buses and metro buses of the Hamburger Hochbahn, the city and metro bus stop in front of ZOB has the name Adenauerallee, in front of the central bus station there are taxi ranks and "kiss-and-ride" parking spaces. The interiors are open from Monday to Sunday between 5:30 a.m. and 11:00 p.m., outside the opening times, the bus platforms can also be accessed via the road network.

Immediately next to the main train station there are several bus stops of the Hamburger Verkehrsverbund (HVV) to the east in Kirchenallee, to the south on the Steintorbrücke and to the west at Steintorwall.

By car

  • From the south and east one arrives on the A1 and about their extension A255 over the Elbe bridges and on the B4 almost to the main train station.
  • From the north via the A7 recommend the runs Symbol: AS 26 Hamburg-Stellingen, continue on the B4 (about 10 km) and departure Symbol: AS 28 Hamburg-Bahrenfeld, continue on the B431/B4 (about 8.5 km).

With the taxi

There are enough taxis in Hamburg. There are plenty of taxis available, especially around the main train station. There are taxi ranks

  • east of the station on 6 Hachmannplatz and across the street on the 7 Kirchenallee
  • west of the station at the exit 8 Glockengießerwall as well as on the opposite side of the street on 9 Stone gate wall.

By bicycle

Hamburg, and thus also the main train station, is over various long-distance cycle paths easy to reach. In the inner city area there are partly well-developed bike paths. Unfortunately, there are also numerous bike paths that were built earlier and are bumpy and quite narrow. There is even one official bike site.   • You can bring your own bikes to covered bike racks on the 10 Kirchenallee forecourt and 11 Glockengießerwall forecourt be turned off. Attention: Secure well, bicycles are at great risk in Hamburg!

Hamburg Central Station is largely barrier-free. The entrances to the foyer as well as to the south footbridge are at ground level, all platforms can be reached via elevators. There are lifts for wheelchairs up to 250 kg on platforms 3 to 6. A handicapped accessible toilet has in the 1 Toilet center Open all day in the foyer east. Park

Parking in the immediate vicinity of the train station is often associated with a long search for a free space. There are only a few short-term parking spaces at Hamburg Central Station that are heavily frequented and almost always occupied and subject to charges. A few parking garages are available for longer parking times.

  • The 12 parking spot west of the Wandelhalle (access from Ernst-Merck-Brücke) offers very few spaces and is only suitable for parking for a very short time or for getting on and off. Some spaces are reserved for car rental companies as return spaces.
  • The 13 parking spot am Heide-Kabel-Platz is also only suitable for short periods of time.
  • The 14 parking spot at the Kirchenalle is most likely to offer a free space, but only for short-term parkers.
  • The 15 DB parking lot Chicken post is about 350 m away and has only 16 spaces (Directions sketch and tariff pdf)
  • The 16 Parking garage at the main train station (Access via the "Borgesch" street, behind the Deutsches Schauspielhaus) is also suitable for several days. It has 547 parking spaces (including 2 spacesbarrier-freebarrier-free) for vehicles up to 2 m high. It is, however, quite tight there. Favorable tariff for prepayment (upon entry).

Night train connections:

  • Euronight (EN) / Nightjet (NJ) Hamburg is made possible by the night train ÖBB Nightjet out Zurich (above Basel), Vienna (above Linz) as innsbruck (above Munich) approached. In the Nightjet there are the travel categories sleeping car (1st and 2nd class) as well as couchette and seating car (only 2nd class), the train requires reservations for all travel categories. Big city train stations are of course not a high security area. Bag and luggage thieves in particular have a large field of activity here. People who are drunk are also common. So caution is advised. If you get caught in spite of all caution, it is best to turn to:

Surroundings and sights

The Mönckebergstrasse and Spitalerstrasse shopping streets and the Lange Reihe street are within walking distance, and the Inner Alster Lake and Jungfernstieg and the Deichtorhallen are within walking distance. It is just 1,000 m to the town hall and 1,800 m to the Hafencity.

  • If you have a little more time, you can also start a city tour. A 19 Tour bus stop is located on the east side of the train station directly in front of the Kirchenallee exit.
