The Federal motorway 1 (Motorway 1 or A 1) is a federal trunk road currently operated by Heiligenhafen in Ostholstein above Lübeck, Hamburg, Bremen, Osnabrück, Muenster, Dortmund, Hagen, Cologne with a break in the Eifel continue on trier over after Saarbrücken leads. It is the third longest German motorway and also part of the European roads E 22, E 29, E 31, E 37, E 42, E 44, E 47 and E 422. The northern section of the motorway is also known as the Vogelfluglinie, the section from Lübeck into The Ruhr area as a Hansalinie, the route from Dortmund to Cologne as a Ruhr tangent and the Eifel route as an Eifel motorway.
The total length of the motorway is 774 km; of which 748 km were in operation in 2020.
background
In the 1930s, the Hamburg - Bremen and Hamburg - Lübeck sections were put into operation. The Hansalinie from Bremen to Dortmund and the Ruhr tangent were completed in the 1960s. The Eifel motorway was in operation until its end in Blankenheim in 1982. The motorway is interrupted between Blankenheim (junction 114) and Kelberg (junction 117). The continuation via Daun, Wittlich and east of Trier, Hermeskeil and Qui Various leads over the triangle Nonnweiler to Saarbrücken, but there is no continuation to the Federal motorway 6. A connection to the Danish Motorway network over the planned Fehmarnbelt tunnel across the island Fehmarn is provided. On November 3, 2020, the Federal Administrative Court confirmed the dismissal of the action against the planning approval decision in the final instance.
The gap in the Eifel can be reached via federal road 51 (to Stadtkyll without local thoroughfares) and from there on via the federal highway 421 via Hillesheim.
