The Federal motorway 63 (BAB 63 or A 63) is one of the shorter highways at 70 km. It connects the Rhine-Main area with Kaiserslautern and continues to serve traffic in the direction of Saarland / France.

The federal motorway 63 was only completely finished in 2004. Before that, traffic ran on the former Bundesstraße 40, which still runs parallel to the motorway for long stretches.

The Weinheim viaduct between the Erbes-Büdesheim and Freimersheim junctions is one of the largest viaducts in Germany. In strong crosswinds it can happen that a speed limit of 40 km / h is imposed or the motorway is even completely closed. If that happens (which is also announced on the traffic radio), you have to take a detour (to the south from Kreuz Alzey follow the U 36 / U 38, to the north from AS Kirchheimbolanden follow the U 51 / U 53).

There is also the greatest risk of congestion there, especially during rush hour.
