The Federal highway 71 (BAB 71 or A 71) connects the southern Harz with the room Schweinfurt in Lower Franconia and with it the southern one Saxony-Anhalt about the Thuringian State capital Erfurt with the Thuringian Forest with the cities Ilmenau, Suhl and Meiningen as well as the Lower Franconian Grave field with the Main. The route crossing the Thuringian Forest is also known as the Thuringian Forest Autobahn. Via a short intermediate piece on the Federal motorway 70 she has connection to the Federal motorway 7.
