Mellrichstadt is a city in the Rhön in the Lower Franconian part Bavaria. The town's motto is: "Young city within old walls".

The city has belonged to the Rhön-Grabfeld district since 1972 and was previously a district town in the district of the same name;
Districts of Mellrichstadt are the villages of Bahra, Eußenhausen, Frickenhausen, Mühlfeld, Sondheim im Grabfeld and Roßrieth.

little chronicle
In the times of the Carolingians, the royal court is "Madalrichestat" one of the central points in the Franconian Westergau and is first mentioned in a document in 822. The center of this original settlement was formed by the parish and the Roßmarkt as the seat of the central court. In 1031 the city was donated to the Würzburg monastery.
The Battle of Mellrichstadt took place on Tuesday, August 7, 1078, on the Grafenberg between Mellrichstadt and Oberstreu and south of Mellrichstadt. It was the first armed conflict between King Heinrich IV and the anti-king Rudolf von Rheinfelden in the investiture dispute; Rudolf's side emerged victorious from the battle, and today over 5,000 dead are estimated.
In 1232 Mellrichstadt received the City rights, from this time the city wall was built.
1801 came Mellrichstadt as a result of the secularization to Bavaria, to the newly formed Grand Duchy of Würzburg in 1805 and to Bavaria again in 1814.
For decades after the end of the Second World War, the city lay directly on the inner-German one Zone boundary and was from Thuringian Hinterland completely cut off, Mellrichstadt only moved back to the center of Germany with reunification.
Mellrichstadt was until 1972 County seat in the district of Mellrichstadt (identification MET), which at that time was merged with the also dissolved district of Königshofen im Grabfeld and with the district of Bad Neustadt to form today's Rhön-Grabfeld district.

Churches
1 City parish church of St. Kilian: The first church on the site is dated to the year 742 and was one of the church buildings with which King Karlmann furnished the diocese of Würzburg founded by Boniface. This building was followed by a few other church buildings. Today's three-aisled pillar basilica was built in different phases with a focus from the late 13th century, the two attached chapels are dated to the years 1304 and 1504.
Inside are various stone and wooden sculptures, a stone sacrament house, and the Madonna of the Crescent Moon from the 15th century.
2 Hospital Church: The chapel (Sebastianuskapelle) built in 1356 by the von Stein family. In 1662 it was completely renovated after damage in the Thirty Years' War. Inside are grave slabs, a reliquary bust, a Madonna and figures of saints from the 15th century.
3 Anna Chapel (at the lower Streubrücke) with origins in the late Gothic, in the Thirty Years War the first chapel was destroyed. The current neo-Gothic chapel was built in 1866.
The 4 Kreuzkapelle, on the road to Stockheim and in front of the city wall, was built in 1690/92 on the rubble of an even older chapel. Inside is an altarpiece from 1695.
5 Pilgrimage church Lady Chapel on the Großenberg, which is a small hill near the train station. The chapel was opened in 1494 under Pope Alexander VI. Mentioned for the first time, the interior dates from the 16th and 17th centuries. Old castle
7 A Henneberg castle that was built around the year 1000 as a predecessor is suspected here, evidence of which is the remains of a tower from this time that were found during construction work.

Today the district court and the administrative community of the city are housed in the old castle.
Wolzog Castle

Roßrieth moated castle
10 Located in the village of Roßrieth. A first castle complex as a mansion is probably at least as old as the place itself and therefore dates from at least the early twelfth century, it is mentioned for the first time in a deed of assignment from Bishop Embrico of Würzburg. The ownership of the castle is changeable, it was verifiably temporarily destroyed in 1401 as a robber baron castle. Today's moated castle as a two-wing, almost square complex with an approx. 20 m wide and approx. 2 m deep moat was probably built in the 16th century under the Lords of Bibra (coat of arms stone above the stair tower), the lower parts probably originate from the old castle complex. The exterior of the building was thoroughly renovated between 1980 and 1985; the interior is still in need of renovation and is not accessible.
Buildings
Remnants of the historic city wall with bath and painting gate, originated in the 13th century.
- 11 Citizen Tower, one of the landmarks of the city and built on the city wall in the 15th century. The tower was the prison for the townspeople.
- The 12 Powder tower is the rest of the Upper City Gate. The gate was first mentioned in 1356 and demolished in 1821.
Suhlesturm and Gallows tower:
The two waiting towers stand in the west and north on hills above the city and within sight of each other. They were built in wood in the 13th century and as stone buildings in the 15th century. In the Middle Ages, the towers were used as signaling stations for the transmission of messages in a whole chain of towers in the southern Vorrhön, which presumably continued until after Wurzburg was enough. The exact meaning and affiliation of this historical news medium is no longer known.
- 13 Suhlesturm: Located on the west side of the city on the connecting road to Frickenhausen, after approx. 2 km turn off the connecting road onto a tarred dirt road to the south ("uphill"), further approx. 500 m, parking at the tower; The tower standing lonely in the middle of the field is freely accessible. Frickenhauser lake
The 19 Frickenhauser lake (314 m) is located in the district of Frickenhausen around seven kilometers southwest of Mellrichstadt.
The almost ideally circular lake in a depression is to be classified as rather small with a circumference of 380 m, an area of approx. One hectare and 28 m water depth, but is nevertheless the only natural lake Lower Franconia.
Geologically, the sinkhole lake is a rarity, the sink in the earth is the collapsed cavity of a washed-out salt deposit from the Permian era around 260 million years ago. Due to its origin, the lake has no above-ground inflow or outflow.
Since 2002 the area has been the then newly started project "Bavaria's most beautiful geotopes"(Bavarian State Office for the Environment) counted.
The Frickenhäuser See is not designated as a bathing lake, but the green water is still used as a bathing opportunity and as a leisure and recreation area.
Every year on a Sunday at the beginning of July, the lake festival takes place, the end of which in the evening is a remarkable fireworks display in front of the picturesque backdrop of the lake. If you want to get hold of one of the popular vantage points right on the lake at the well-attended festival, you should arrive in good time in the afternoon.
