Schweinfurt
no tourist info on Wikidata: Add tourist information

Schweinfurt is in the middle Main Franconia. The former imperial city on Main is a university town, a wine town and advertises itself as an art town. Schweinfurt is the most important industrial city in Northern Bavaria with the highest gross domestic product in Bavaria.

Districts

Schweinfurt is one of the few cities in which no suburbs were incorporated during the regional reform. The agglomeration has a population of around 97,000 (2011 census). The narrow city limits therefore only include the core city with around 20 districts or smaller quarters within city quarters, all of which, with the exception of the port and Main Valley, are north of the Main.

  • Old Town (eastern part of the city center)
  • Askren Manor (former US quarter)
  • Bergl
  • Deutschhof
  • Donkey height
  • Garden city
  • Haardt
  • Hafen-Ost
  • Harbor West

  • Main valley
  • Musicians' quarter
  • Oberndorf
  • Steinberg
  • Yorktown Village (like Askren Manor)
  • Zeilbaum
  • Zürch (eastern corner of the old town)

With the one south of the Main Sennfeld the city forms a structural and functional unit.

Districts of tourist or historical interest

These districts are all north of the Main.

  • Old town

The eastern part of the city center. Two kilometers west of the first margravial settlement was the new one Civitas Imperii (Imperial City) laid out in the 12th century. It is today's old town around the town hall and market square, with specialty shops, restaurants, cafes and museums. Later the imperial city was extended to the west by the Roßmarkt up to the Jägersbrunnen, today an inner city area with department stores, banks and the art gallery.

  • Zurich

Oldest quarter of the old town, located in the eastern corner in the corner between the Main and Mariental. A former castle district with narrow streets and the one that is over 300 years old Zurich parish fair, the oldest parish fair in Lower Franconia.

  • Fischerrain

Quarter in the southwest corner of the old town. Former fishing district on the Main, which was outside the city wall until 1436 and had its own mayor.

  • Kiliansberg

Located above the Main and Mariental on former vineyards. Area of the first margravial settlement, today residential area.

  • Hell Valley

At the foot of the former castle hill of the margraves of Schweinfurt, where later a monastery was located. Today the castle stands on the mountain Peter's forehead with a winery.

  • West town

Part of the city center southwest of the old town, with the shopping center City Gallery. The earlier one Ludwigsvorstadt is a typical Westend, with partly still preserved, high, closed Wilhelminian style buildings.

  • Alt-Oberndorf

First mentioned in a document in 741, it belonged to the imperial city of Schweinfurt from 1436 until the Congress of Vienna, after which it was annexed by Bavaria and incorporated into the city of Schweinfurt in 1919. A former farming village built in by large-scale industry, partly with an old Franconian character. A moated castle once stood at the Kreuzkirche.

  • Yorktown Village

A semi-detached house district that was laid out in the typical style of American single-family house districts and has been in the process of being converted since 2014 after the Americans left. Currently (2015) not yet accessible.

background

  • The city was first mentioned in a document in 791 when it was donated to the Fulda Abbey.
  • between 1240 and 1250, the city was destroyed for supremacy in Main Franconia between the Hennebergers and the bishop of Würzburg. (First city ruin)
  • In 1554 the city was almost completely destroyed in the wake of the Second Margrave War. The reconstruction dragged on until 1615. The Renaissance town hall, the old grammar school, the Ebracher Hof and the armory are evidence of the reconstruction during this time. (Second city ruin)
  • Today's National Academy of Sciences was founded here in 1652.
  • During the Second World War, 15 major air raids caused severe damage to the city between 1943 and 1945.
  • The city has been shaped by the metalworking industry since around 1890. The largest employers are the automotive supplier ZF Friedrichshafen AG (formerly Fichtel & Sachs), the two ball bearing manufacturers Schaeffler AG (formerly FAG Kugelfischer) and SKF (Svenska Kullagerfabriken) as well as Bosch Rexroth AG (formerly Deutsche Star) and Fresenius Medical Care.

Tourist Attractions

City wall at the upper wall

City of contradictions

The city without the very big historical sights surprises with contrasts and very contrasting quarters, as well as scenic corners.

Contrasts on the Lower Wall: city wall, classicist palaces and Rückert Center

Enchanted lookout tower

Unfortunately, there is no publicly accessible observation tower for an overview of the city. You only get a limited overview at an enchanted place: A small observation tower is located above the vineyards behind Peterstirn Palace, at the eastern exit of the old B 26 country road towards Haßfurt / Bamberg, above the Main. The steep driveway to this 1200 year old town of Schweinfurt prehistory (see Districts in historical area) can only be reached via the Höllental (turn left from the B 26 beforehand).

You can see the southern city with the two harbor cranes and, if the visibility is good, the entire Steigerwaldkamm with all three Franconian administrative districts. To the right behind the Schwanberg you can see the Kapellberg, 48 kilometers away, above the Middle Franconian wine town of Bullenheim. There is a parking lot just 500 meters further back, where the 2-kilometer high-altitude hiking trail to the village and Mainberg Castle begins.

Old town

Eastern old town, Krumme Gasse
Southern old town, Petersgasse

The western part of the medieval city area, which is largely surrounded by ramparts, is now a mixed city area, while the eastern part around the market square still has the character of an old town.

Misunderstood Keßlergasse

In the narrow Keßlergasse, one of the oldest German pedestrian zones, which leads from the market to the west, everything from good specialist shops to junk stores is represented. This alley with its bazaar character, which unfortunately suffered a loss due to the closure of the market hall, wanted the local retail association to transform it into a “shopping mall” with a glass roof, which fortunately did not happen and in the City Gallery one kilometer further west was implemented more credibly. From around 2016, a major construction site with the first section of the Square crownthat will change a lot here.

The three main quarters are located in the south of the old town Zurich, Southern old town and Fischerrain (please refer Districts).

Zurich

Zurich, a former castle district

The small, cute quarter is located in the south-east corner of the old town on a flood-proof hill at a right angle between Main Valley and Mariental. From 1310 to 1427 there was an imperial castle of the Henneberger in the corner. There was a small brewery in the neighborhood, that Wallbräu. The over 300 years old Zurich parish fair is the oldest parish fair in Lower Franconia. It takes place in the decorated streets and has a traditional, authentic atmosphere. The landmark of the quarter are the St. Salvator Church (see Churches) and the Ebracher Hof, with a small hotel and restaurant, a stone's throw from the Georg Schäfer Museum (see Museums). The former castle district without great buildings, with its narrow streets, houses and small historical accents is loved by the people of Schweinfurt.

Zurich and Zurich

The name is said to have the same origin as that of the Swiss city Zurich have that used to be too Zurich was called and does not appear anywhere else as a place name. In both cases it is probably derived from the Middle High German word for cow dung. Perhaps here, as there, it is about flood-proof pastures, which are also well suited for first settlements. Because the origins of the city of Zurich were on a hill, today's one Lindenhof. However, recently a newer, more plausible interpretation emerged and derives the name from Castle District from, because even after the castle was razed, the small quarter had a special status as a special rights zone.

Churches

Churches in Schweinfurt
St. John's Church, Martin-Luther-Platz, Christmas 2014
  • 1  St. John's Church. St.-Johannis-Kirche in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaSt.-Johannis-Kirche im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsSt.-Johannis-Kirche (Q14537006) in der Datenbank Wikidata.Martin-Luther-Platz, main Protestant church. The oldest preserved building in the city, with Romanesque components in a side chapel. First written mention in 1237. The baptismal font from 1367 with its original painting, the baroque gilded pulpit from 1694 and the Bride gate towards the market square. The interior is a treasure chamber with natural stone wall panels of old tombs and pictures. With the exception of a modern altarpiece, it is one of the rarer West German city churches without style breaks due to newfangled additions.
  • 2  St. Salvator Church, Frauengasse 1. St.-Salvator-Kirche in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaSt.-Salvator-Kirche im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsSt.-Salvator-Kirche (Q14532186) in der Datenbank Wikidata.Frauengasse 1, Protestant. Built 1717-1719 in the simple baroque style on the site of older churches. Located directly on the city wall, on the foundations of a former castle chapel. Church for the oldest part of the city Zurich.
  • 3  Holy Spirit Church. Heilig-Geist-Kirche in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaHeilig-Geist-Kirche im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsHeilig-Geist-Kirche (Q14537913) in der Datenbank Wikidata.Anton-Niedermeier-Platz 1, main Catholic church. Erected 1892-1902 in neo-Romanesque style, as a replica of the Speyer Cathedral, but with only one tower.
  • 4  St. Kilkians Church, Sankt-Kilian-Strasse 2. St.-Kilkians-Kirche in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaSt.-Kilkians-Kirche im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsSt.-Kilkians-Kirche (Q28005809) in der Datenbank Wikidata.Friedrich-Ebert-Straße 24, Catholic. A modern work of art from the 1950s by Georg Meistermann, which he erected on the surrounding walls of a church from the 1920s that was destroyed in the Second World War, with a former neo-baroque onion dome. With a 250 square meter colored glass window, which was considered the largest church window in Germany at the time and shows the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
  • 5  Church of the Resurrection, Brombergstrasse 73. Auferstehungskirche in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaAuferstehungskirche im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsAuferstehungskirche (Q28009238) in der Datenbank Wikidata.Bergl district, Brombergstraße 73, Protestant (inaccessible outside of church services and events). From the son of the Norwegian draftsman Olaf Gulbransson, the architect Olaf Andreas Gulbransson, from 1958/59; under monument protection since 2004. Probably the largest and in any case most idiosyncratic new church building (ensemble with rectory and kindergarten) by the architect, who died a short time later, in 1961, in a car accident at the age of 45. The campanile was completed posthumously in 1962. The city was hardly aware of the church for decades and was not even mentioned on many sightseeing lists. That only changed after the building damage had been removed and it was included in the list of monuments.

Buildings

  • 6  Peterstirn Palace. The castle is outside of wine festivals and tastings inaccessible and privately owned by the Dahms winery. The town's history began on this former castle hill (see directions for directions) City of contradictions, Haunted prospect storm). A castle that an industrialist from Schweinfurt had built in the romantic era of the 19th century on the vineyards on the eastern edge of the city. A place steeped in history (see Small city history) at an enchanted end of the city. Nothing for the superficial consumer tourist, only for people with a little imagination. A castle from the 10th century of the once powerful margraves of Schweinfurt, who ruled large parts of southern Germany, used to stand here; the first Schweinfurt castle, in front of the later Reichsburg, the one in the old town quarter two kilometers further to the west Zurich lay. Around 1000 moved to the castle on the Peter's forehead a nunnery and a monastery in the 12th century.
City wall Am Unteren Wall on the site of the former imperial castle
  • 7  city wall. It is still preserved with three towers on the eastern ramparts on the Lower and Upper Wall. At the point of the right picture, in the corner between Marien- and Main-valley, the former city wall was also the enclosing wall of the Reichsburg of the Henneberger, which is easy to imagine today. In addition, the city wall has been preserved on the western ramparts at the city theater and art gallery.
  • Also worth seeing in the redeveloped old town quarters are the new buildings, where the gaps in the building were closed with a lot of judgment and empathy, neither in obtrusive modernity nor in a pseudo-historical style, as is often the case elsewhere: see panorama photo mobility.
  • 8  Maxbrücke city entrance
Ebracher Hof, view of Brückenstrasse, with Lantern (right)
  • In 2008 the German Architecture Museum in Frankfurt named the new city library, into which part of the historic Ebracher Hof was integrated, one of the “24 best buildings in Germany”. At the end of the Maxbrücke, three striking buildings form an entrance to the old town. It is a harmonious, award-winning ensemble that combines history and modernity. On the left the Georg Schäfer Museum (see Museums). In the middle the new main customs office and on the right the converted Ebracher Hof, both by the Berlin architecture firm Bruno Fioretti Marquez. Instead of an extension building next to the historic courtyard, the architects placed an underground base floor under a piazza, which is flanked by a 33-meter-long glass bar, the so-called Lantern. It brings light into the basement of the library and marks the former city wall, the course of which it follows.
  • 9  Old Town Hall. Altes Rathaus in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaAltes Rathaus (Q15782799) in der Datenbank Wikidata.Market 1 . The town hall is considered a masterpiece of secular German buildings of the early Renaissance and impresses with its proportions. It was built in 1569-1572 by the Halle master builder Nikolaus Hofmann in a transitional style from the late Gothic to the early Renaissance. On the bay tower are the coats of arms of Emperor Maximilian II and the seven electors. In the vaults of the ground floor there is the former market hall, in which today there are temporary exhibitions and the tourist information office. The old city pharmacy is in the left oriel tower. Also worth seeing is the town hall hall, which is only accessible during concerts and events. The town hall remained undamaged during the Second World War until a major fire, which was probably caused by welding work, almost destroyed the town hall on the evening of April 20, 1959. The roof structure was in full flames and the eastern gable wall curved inwards and threatened to fall into the town hall. However, the fire brigades got the fire under control and in the end it was only a roof fire.

Here, as elsewhere in the city, with the successful interplay of historical buildings and modern architecture, which was not always successful in many other cities.
Scrap tower, Petersgasse
Wilhelminian style house, Luitpoldstrasse 21
  • 12  Scrap tower, Petersgasse 3. It is the landmark of the Südliche Altstadt, the middle of the three Main Quarters, between the one upstream of the Main Zurich and the Fischerrain; built in 1611 as a stair tower of a Renaissance house (in the picture at the back right), in whose vaulted cellar cabaret is located. The tower was raised by four floors in the 19th century for the production of shotgun pellets, with a beautiful view, but is unfortunately not open to the public.
  • In the Weststadt, some large Wilhelminian-style houses remained intact during World War II, for example a row of houses on Friedenstrasse between Schrammstrasse and Luitpoldstrasse.

Monuments

  • 13 Rückert monument
Rückert monument, market

Market square, at the feet of the poet and orientalist sitting on a chair, allegorical figures of two of his main works: Die Armored sonnetswhich he made in 1813 under the pseudonym Freimund Raimar against Napoleon I wrote and the Wisdom of the brahmin. Rückert became a pioneering translator of Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, Indian and Chinese poetry.

  • 14 Ludwigsbrunnen

in the Schweinfurt Main Arc (hard to access), only useful as a detour on the high-altitude hike from Schweinfurt to Mainberg (see Tourist Attractions, Introduction, Enchanted Lookout Tower). 200 m after the parking lot, a steep path leads down to the Main, to the old country road B 26 to Haßfurt. In memory of the Bavarian King Ludwig I, who had this road paved after he got stuck in the mud with his horse-drawn carriage. No parking, city bus stop Ludwigsbrunnen on line 71 or 72.

At today's Anderl-Kupfer-Platz, the box office forecourt of the Willy Sachs Stadium, a monument was erected in honor of the stadium founder Willy Sachs. The stadium opened a month before the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. The name of the stadium and the Schweinfurt honorary citizenship of Willy Sachs have been repeatedly criticized, the reason being his political attitude during the time of the Third Reich.

  • 16 Roller weir memorial

A chain hoist device of the world's first roller weir (MAN 1903), which regulated the water level of the main arm of the Main at the Maxbrücke until 1963, was erected in 1965 as a technical monument on Gutermann-Promenade. The prototype from 1902 between the Maininsel-Bleichrasen and the Böckleinsinsel is still in operation today as a weir.

  • 17 Peking wheel hub

After FAG (Schaeffler) developed the bearings for the Millennium Wheel, the so-called London Eye built, they have now been commissioned to develop and build the two roller bearings, each weighing 11 tons, for the largest, 208 m high Ferris wheel in the world, the Peking Wheel. A size that exceeded previous dimensions. The construction work began in 2006, the planned completion date 2008 was not met and in 2010 the work was stopped because the responsible construction company filed for bankruptcy. The camps were then set up as an industrial monument at the city theater.

Long building history with Mies van der Rohe

MGS: Carl Gustav Carus - The Arctic Ocean near Chamonix 1825 - 1827

Erich Schelling created on behalf of the industrialist Dr. Georg Schäfer came up with a first draft in 1959 to accommodate the already large ones Georg Schäfer Collection. A ski jump at the ramparts was planned as the location, where the city theater was built according to Schelling's plans from 1961 to 1966. In 1960 Mies van der Rohe made a design for another location in the ramparts, in the Fichtelsgarten. This again not realized design was together with a previous design by Mies a prototype for the 1965-1968 New National Gallery West Berlin. Also from Branca (New Pinakothek gallery in Munich) made a draft. Until the former Lord Mayor Gudrun Grieser made two hardships a virtue, removing the stain on an underground car park ruin on which the museum was built. It cost the city nothing, but was financed from privatization proceeds from the Free State of Bavaria and opened in 2000.

An extraordinary museum building by the Berlin architect Volker Staab, which was opened in 2000. The architecture does not impose itself, has neither the arrogance of today's zeitgeist, nor does it want to compete with the surroundings, but brings it into the museum through two loggias and refined views. Timeless, modern architecture that you won't get tired of quickly and that is typical of the new Schweinfurt.

MGS: Carl Spitzweg, The Bookworm

World's largest collection by Carl Spitzweg

The museum is home to the most important private collection of art in the German-speaking area of the 19th century and the world's largest collection by Carl Spitzweg, with 160 paintings and 110 drawings. All known works are by him, with the exception of the Poor poets represented in the museum. The collection has over 100 paintings, gouaches and drawings by Adolph Menzel. In addition, numerous works by Caspar David Friedrich, Max Liebermann, Georg Ferdinand Waldmüller, Wilhelm Leibl, Max Slevogt and others can be seen.

Business-minded Spitzweg

The Bookworm (around 1850) sold well and so Spitzweg painted it a second time in 1851. However, with small, noticeable differences, so that the new work was not mistaken for a copy. This copy hangs in the Central Library of Milwaukee today. In 1854 he painted a third copy, which is probably in a private collection.

Kunsthalle, Rüfferstraße
Kunsthalle, inner courtyard

At the Kunsthalle, as at the Georg Schäfer Museum, Gudrun Grieser also made two hardships a virtue. The Ernst-Sachs-Bad was a large indoor swimming pool by Roderich Fick (1931-1933) from the style epoch of transition from historicism to modernism. It should have been extensively renovated, with all the risks. For example, a leisure pool was built on the area of the existing municipal outdoor pool and the Sachsbad was then converted into an art gallery, which was opened in 2009 and complements the spectrum of the Georg Schäfer Museum. The permanent exhibition "Discourses - German Art after 1945" is shown on 2,000 square meters, combining permanent loans from the Joseph Hierling Collection with works of expressive realism on art between the two world wars, as well as the activities of the MuseumService MuSe and the Kunstverein Schweinfurt e.V.

At the turn of 2013/2014, the Gunter Sachs collection shown, with Pop Art from the 1950s and 1960s, with works by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and others. This exhibition, which attracted 65,000 visitors, was just in Munich seen on a smaller scale.

Streets and squares

Schweinfurt is the city of (market) squares. In the historic city there were a total of five marketplaces for different industries.

Marketplace

Official name market. Apart from the town hall, the Rückert House and a late Gothic house in which a McDonald’s branch is (still) located, he does not have any special historical buildings. But it impresses with its proportions, with the staged town hall and the Rückert monument. The weekly market has a special atmosphere (see Local specialities).

Place at the art gallery with the arcade building
Schillerplatz with the neo-baroque justice building

Martin-Luther-Platz

The spiritual center of the city, with the main Protestant church of St. John and the deanery. The only largely historic square in the city is a place of rest.

Place at the art gallery

With the arcade construction by Roderich Fick (1931-1933)

Hunter's well

With an artificial stream (see picture Focus on fashion) and a 54 m2 large LED advertising wall on Iduna skyscraper. The inconspicuous Hadergasse branches off here, after which an original Schweinfurt figure was named and the oldest music bar in the city Sheppards is located; the war damage has still not been completely repaired and the city wall is also the prison wall of the Villa Rosa.

Schillerplatz

A square laid out in the strict geometry of a triangle, with a fountain and the neo-baroque justice building. The name is reminiscent of the city theater that was originally located here. Metal bands embedded in the pavement with sayings by Friedrich Schiller.

Main promenades

Gutermann promenade

West of the Max Bridge. The promenade with green area is a section of the Main valley cycle path and runs between the railway tracks along the old town and the Main. With moorings for pleasure craft and the Main-Café (see Cafes and bars). Here is also the landing stage for passenger ships; For more detailed information, see the article Main, in the "Shipping" section.

Main promenade Mainkai-Zollhof

East of the Max Bridge. The new promenade is also a section of the Main Valley Cycle Path. Here is the old main customs office (Bavarian classicism), as well as landing stages for river cruise ships and the youth hostel of the city of Schweinfurt (see accommodation). There is one on an old main bastion Gastion, a glass cube with a cafe and outdoor seating in the planning stage; currently there is the City beach (please refer nightlife).

Parks

Ramparts

The old town is surrounded by main promenades and ramparts with paths and green spaces, with two major interruptions at the Kaufhof in the southwest and the Celtis grammar school in the northwest. The ramparts consist of several, z. Sometimes isolated parks:

Old cemetery, maiden kiss
  • South: Old graveyard
  • West: Chateaudun Park between the city wall and the city theater, with lawns to relax in;
  • North: Fichtelsgarten with rubble and large trees;
  • Northeast: Motherwell Park between the city wall with a tower and Marienbach, with a pond and children's playground;
  • Southeast: On the lower wall, newer green space on the city wall and city towers; in a tower is the wine bar s'Türmle (please refer Medium - in the old town); Skate facility under a bridge not far from the Main, here is a passage to the Main Promenade with which Main valley cycle path.

city Park Wehranlagen

To go biking

  • Schweinfurter Sommerweinfest, Mitte Juli

Geöffnet: täglich ab 17:00 Uhr, So Rohetag.

The Schweinfurt nightlife has seen better days. The long bar mile in the northern old town, from Obere Strasse over the Kornmarkt and then further on the north side of the Bauerngasse to the Zeughaus, with some old, historic taverns, is neglected in sections, some pubs are closed and old houses are empty. Now, a renovation of the old town should bring the quarter back to life from around 2015; a local reopening has already taken place.

Work

The most important industrial city in Northern Bavaria, with one of the highest job densities in Germany, offers ideal working conditions in the metalworking industry; with large companies competing with each other within the city. The service sector offers a relatively large number of jobs, as it supplies the Schweinfurt / Main-Rhön region with 430,000 inhabitants and also southern Thuringia.

A relatively low price structure and short distances to work relieve the wallet and extend free time. In a city that is very well developed for traffic and free of traffic jams, with the Schweinfurt tangent A 70 - A 71, with many motorway junctions, also in the industrial area. The tangent is connected directly to the city center with its service workplaces by a B 286 expressway. The regional train stops three times, next to the main train station, right next to large-scale industry, among others at the Schweinfurt-Mitte stop in the city area, right next to the offices of the authorities and banks.

security

Bergl: Oberndorfer water tower

Bavaria is one of the safest regions in Europe and Lower Franconia has the lowest crime rate in Bavaria (Statistics 2014). Of course, you should also follow the usual rules here and e.g. not leave any valuables lying around openly in the car.

The social hotspot of the city is the Bergl, where 12,000 people live in one square kilometer. The north of the district, with its high-rise buildings, is even worth seeing in its own way.

The Weststadt is a busy, safe inner city quarter during the day. Caution should only be exercised at night.

Practical advice

Service and addresses

language

Citizen information is partly held in German, Russian and Turkish.

The dialect plays a smaller role in the multicultural city than it used to and recently you can also hear Standard German. The city and the surrounding area belong to the smallest German dialect main group, the East Franconian, that is about the Palatinate and on in a very narrow corridor through the Odenwald above Main Franconia as far as southern Thuringia. Within this dialect zone in Mainfranken Sea-catching (German Main Franconian) spoken. The shortest sentence is "E Ä ü" (Eng. One egg left). In the soft pronunciation there is no difference between "B" and "P" and between "D" and "T". Spelling in Franconia is more practical than anywhere else in Germany. One speaks of "soft" and "hard B" and of "soft" and "hard D"; instead of the cumbersome spelling "D for Dora" and "T for Theodor".

The Schweinfurt dialect has other peculiarities, with three options for the diminutive form in the plural. Several "little houses" are called for example "Häusle", "Häusli" or "Häuslich" and the elongated rolls are called "Stölli". There are also their own words that nobody in the surrounding area understands. The wheelbarrow is called z. B. Roddbane.
