The small town Hildburghausen in southern Thuringia is the district town of the district of the same name and is located in the upper valley of the Werra. It was also a residential town until 1826, as can be seen from the remains of the castle and a castle park.

Hildburghausen has a tranquil market square with town houses from the 16th to 18th centuries and a late Gothic town hall, which was once the Henneberg's moated castle. Other attractions include:

In the south of the city is the 496 m high Stadtbergfrom whose Bismarck tower you have a wide view: to Dolmar (740 m) near Meiningen, to the Thuringian Forest, to Bleßberg (865 m) near Eisfeld, to Veste Coburg (464 m), to the castle ruins of Straufhain (449 m) and to the Gleichbergen (679 and 641 m).
