Schleusingen is a small town on the southern edge of the Thuringian Forest. It is 372 m high and belongs to the Hildburghausen district.

By train

Unfortunately Schleusingen no longer has a regularly operated railway connection. The nearest train stations are in Themar, Suhl and Hildburghausen, from where buses run to Schleusingen.

By bus

WerraBus GmbH buses run daily from Suhl, Hildburghausen, Eisfeld, Sonneberg and Masserberg to Schleusingen, and on weekdays also from Themar and Schleusingerneundorf. On the line 200 Suhl - Schleusingen - Hildburghausen there is an hourly service on weekdays, which is condensed during rush hour.

The nearest long-distance bus stop is in Zella-Mehlis (approx. 25 km) and is served by the Flixbus company with connections to Leipzig, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe and Freiburg, among others.

Schleusingen has an exit on the A73 BambergSuhl. The city is accessible via state and federal highways, among others Ilmenau, Suhl, Ice field, Themar and Hildburghausen reachable from.

Schleusingen is connected to its districts and the surrounding towns via roads and bike paths. The WerraBus buses stop at the bus station (directly at the former train station) and some other stops, including the hospital and shopping center. On certain public holidays, museum trains run on the Rennsteigbahn (Schleusingen train station and Schleusingen Ost stop) to the train station Rennsteig and after Ilmenau.

Tourist Attractions

This is the most important architectural monument in the city Bertholdsburg Castle. The Counts of Henneberg built the castle from 1226 to 32nd lived there until the 16th century. Today the building houses the castle

activities

Numerous hiking trails lead from Schleusingen to the Rennsteig and through the southern foothills of the Thuringian Forestmost of which are also good for bike rides. Popular hiking destinations are among others Vessertal (approx. 7 km), the Adlersberg (approx. 15 km) and the Brunnhügel near Schleusingerneundorf (approx. 7 km). In the summer months the outdoor swimming pool and the recreation area at Bergsee Ratscher are open daily. Cultural events often take place in the Künstlerhof "Roter Ochse". Annual festivals are:

  • the castle and town festival with the traditional "Abitaufe" (end of June / beginning of July)
  • Medieval markets at Bertholdsburg Castle
  • the country festival at Bergsee Ratscher (July)

The city center offers numerous shopping opportunities, mainly small shops (groceries, fashion, books, household goods, etc.). There are also several supermarkets and a shopping center on the outskirts.

The regional cuisine is mainly characterized by the Thuringian Rostbratwurst. In the region around Schleusingen it is characterized by a less spicy, yet piquant taste.

Other popular excursion destinations include the Bleßberg (20 km southeast) and the Dolmar (30 km northwest) as well as the cities Coburg (50 km south), Bamberg (90 km south), Eisenach (100 km northwest), Ilmenau (30 km north), Erfurt (90 km north) and Weimar (90 km northeast).

On the corresponding days of travel, a trip with museum trains on the Rennsteigbahn (regular traffic stopped in 1997) to the Rennsteig train station and to Themar is recommended. This railway line is one of the steepest still preserved standard gauge adhesion railways in Germany and is maintained by a museum railway association.
