background

Ilmenau was first mentioned in 1273. City rights were granted in 1341. The first rulers of Ilmenau were the Counts of Käfernburg. When this family died out, Ilmenau came to the county of Henneberg. The Hennebergers died out in 1660. With this, the Saxons took control of Ilmenau. From now until 1920 the city belonged to the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach. In 1752 a city fire destroyed the entire city. In 1776, Goethe visited Ilmenau for the first time. He later stayed in Ilmenau several times as part of his work as Mining Minister. It was his concern to improve the silver mining in Ilmenau. In addition, Goethe repeatedly made scientific studies here. In 1831 Goethe celebrated his last birthday in the hotel "Zum Löwen" in Ilmenau. He stayed in Ilmenau for a total of 288 days, which earned the city the nickname Goethe City. In 1830 the spa business began in Ilmenau. It specialized in tuberculosis patients as well as patients with other respiratory diseases. At that time Ilmenau had the reputation of a climatic health resort with a "stimulating climate". The spa operation was discontinued in the 1920s. Today there are only those Old spa gardens and the Lessing Park as well as the designation Railway station bathroom stayed in the spa district for the train station. In 1894 that became Thuringian technical center founded. It is the cornerstone for today's Technical University with about 7,000 students.

Practical advice

The Ilmenau people are an open people. You shouldn't blame them for the fact that most of them are only sporadic users of the words You're welcome and thanks are. Then there are also things that the Ilmenauer doesn't like to hear at all:

  • He would speak Saxon (even if it sounds like that to strangers sometimes)
  • His city is nothing special (he lives here, it has to be special)

The Ilmenau information is the city tourist information. It is located on the market square in the immediate vicinity of the town hall.
