Rudolstadt is lying in Saale valley between Saalfeld and Jena. The former royal seat is also Schillerstadt named because Friedrich Schiller first met Goethe here, in the Beulwitzschen House that is now a museum.

Rudolstadt was first named in 776 Rudolfestat mentioned in a document and has had town charter since 1326. In the 13th century the city belonged to County of Orlamünde, in the first half of the 14th century it came into the possession of the Counts of Schwarzburg above. In 1710 Rudolstadt became the residence of the Principality of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt.

The city made a name for itself in the 19th century with the Anchor stones the former Richter company, the forerunners of Lego bricks.

Until his escape in 1941, the future French President F. Mitterrand was housed as a prisoner of war in the Schaala district.

The city is ruled by the mighty Heidecksburg Castle towers above, which was rebuilt in baroque style after a fire from 1737 by the princes of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt. The majestic, three-winged baroque complex lies a full 60 m above the Saale and houses several state rooms. Here you will also find the Thuringian State Museum Heidecksburg, the Thuringian State Archives Rudolstadt and the exhibition Roccoco en miniature. From this first meeting a fruitful poet friendship developed. But Friedrich Schiller and Louise v. Lengefeld and his lovely daughters Caroline and Charlotte face each other. The summer of 1788 was unforgettable for those involved, a love affair matured between the noble daughters Caroline and Charlotte and the young poet Schiller, from which the marriage with Charlotte von Langefeld emerged. The events of the "Rudolstadt Summer 1788" were filmed in the Berlinale contribution "The Beloved Sisters". In May 2009 the Schillerhaus was opened as a museum.

If you stroll attentively through the city and perhaps look at the ground, you will discover stumbling blocks here and there that are embedded in the sidewalk in front of the last house of a citizen who did not like the Nazi regime, to remind of the fate of these persecuted people. The Wednesday market on Marktplatz and Marktstrasse is known for its fruit and vegetables from the region. In summer there are also mushrooms and blackberries from the surrounding forests. Traditional dishes, such as roast with real Thuringian dumplings, are available right on the market square, where Thuringian sausages are traditionally fried on an open fire. Fried sausages with the typical wood fire taste are also shrink-wrapped in butchers to take away. There you can get more Thuringian sausage specialties. The Pronto Pronto on the Neuer Markt, directly behind the courthouse, cooks very well the Italian way. The dishes from the monthly menu are recommended, but the simple pizza with only oil and rosemary is delicious. The best view over the city is from the castle café, in summer with a balcony over the old town, where the tower of the old town hall seems close enough to touch. From there the shortest ascent from the city center via a stairway.
