Weimar is the fourth largest city Thuringia. The independent city is surrounded by the Central Thuringian district of Weimarer Land. The next bigger cities are Erfurt, Jena and Apolda. The places of activity of the poets Goethe and Schiller are part of the World heritage.

background

Weimar, the cultural capital of 1999, stands above all for that Weimar Classic, the phase of the 19th century, in which Goethe and Schiller, Wieland and Herder lived in Weimar and in particular the first two were linked by a joint creative period of over 10 years in Weimar.

In addition, Weimar also stands for later cultural influences, so it has from Walter Gropius Founded in 1919 bauhaus its first seat here and the influence of the Bauhaus style on modern art began here. Also the Weimar School of Applied Arts, 1908 by Henry van der Welde founded, is one of the most influential cultural sites. Both buildings and the Haus am Horn were added to the UNESCO world cultural heritage The 11 memorials followed in 1998 Classic Weimar. In 2001, Goethe's literary estate, which is kept in the Goethe and Schiller Archives, was also entered in the register of Memory of the World, added to the world document heritage.

history

Weimar is first mentioned in a document in 899. Since the middle of the 10th century it has belonged to a side branch of the Counts of Orlamünde. Even before the extinction of this family (1376) the place fell to the Landgraves of Thuringia and after their extinction (1440) to Electoral Saxony. During the division between Ernst and Albert (1485), Weimar and Thuringia came to the Ernestine line and became residence when Johann Wilhelm and his nephews, the children of Johann Friedrich the Middle (1572), were divided. In August 1560 the colloquium between Flacius and Strigel took place here because of the synergistic disputes. The highlight in Weimar's history was the reign of Carl August, during which it acquired the name of "German Athens" through the luminaries of German literature appointed by this prince, Goethe, Schiller, Wieland, Herder and others.
