The district town with around 17,000 inhabitants Sömmerda is in the middle of the Thuringian Basin, 20 km north of Erfurt. It is a location of the electrical industry and extends to the right of the Unstrut. Sömmerda was the birthplace and place of residence of the inventor of the needle gun, Johann Nikolaus von Dreyse (1787 to 1867).

getting there
By train
The Sömmerda train station is a so-called “tower station”, because this is where the electrified Erfurt – Sangerhausen line crosses the “peppermint railway”, a branch line from Straussfurt to Großheringen Thuringian Tuscany, which takes its name from the earlier peppermint cultivation in the region. The traffic cycle between Erfurt and Sömmerda is reduced to one hour; sometimes trains even run every half hour.
In the street
Sömmerda is on the A 71 Erfurt - Sangerhausen tied up. In the west-east direction is the B 176 Bad Langensalza–Merseburg worth mentioning.
By bicycle
The Unstrut cycle path passes the place west of the center.
