Bologna is the capital ofEmilia Romagna.

To know

San Petronio, patron saint of Bologna in a painting by Francesco del Cossa preserved in the Pinacoteca di Bologna.

There are three words that are used to describe Bologna. Bologna is called the "fat", because of its rich and caloric gastronomic culture, the "learned" for the ancient University and the "red", like the color of the walls of its houses. Bologna is a medium-sized city that is located in a strategic position with respect to other centers of tourist interest, such as Venice, Padua, Florence, Milan, Modena, Ravenna is Ferrara. Its location makes it a good base for day trips to many other interesting cities.

With most tourists it does not enjoy the fame that other cities of art similar in size such as Florence can have. Little is left of the Roman era, but it boasts a very well preserved historic center, full of noble palaces of the '500, medieval towers, Gothic basilicas, a picture gallery of national value and characteristic streets lined with arcades. attract the "average" tourist, but to be able to enjoy the works of art of the past, the liveliness of everyday life (to which tens of thousands of university students contribute) and the gastronomic delicacies, a visit must take a few days.

Geographical notes

Bologna is located in the Po Valley, close to the Apennine hills, between the mouth of the Reno valley to the west and that of the Savena to the east.The provincial territory extends from the southern edges of the Po Valley bordering Ferrara to the Tuscan Apennine mountains. Emilian, ranging from 29 m asl of the Corticella hamlet, at 54 of the historic center of the capital, up to 300 m a.s.l. of Sabbiuno and Colle della Guardia (also in the municipal area) at 1945 m a.s.l. del Corno alle Scale (in the provincial territory).

When to go

The best times to visit Bologna are, from a climatic point of view, spring and autumn.

During the summer, from the second half of July the city begins to empty, several shops close and the heat is heavy; the University closes in August, helping to reduce the Bolognese daily and night life. However, there are many cultural initiatives that animate the city in the summer.

Background

Already inhabited in the Iron Age, in X century a. C., urbanized by the Etruscans, fortified by the Gauls, became a Municipality with the Romans, it was crossed by Huns, Goths, Lombards, Carolingians, Austrians, French, each of which left traces still visible in the city. , Church and autonomy; dominated by two Lords, Pepoli and Bentivoglio, papal fiefdom, Guelph with a Ghibelline soul, Bologna has always been fighting for freedom. First Italian municipality and one of the first cities in the world to approve an act that abolished servitude: the Liber Paradisus in 1256; owes its great opening, first of all, to the ferment that arose around the University: theAlma Mater, the oldest in the world.The foundation is dated 1088 and its fame has brought students from all over the world here. Bologna has been since 2006 Unesco Creative City of Music and the music pulsates in every corner: from Municipal Theater toMozart Orchestra, founded by Claudio Abbado; from live Jazz music in the Osterie to concerts in the Piazza; from the Conservatory to the School of the Opera to finish with the hundreds of musical associations present in the area.

It has been home to personalities like Father Martini, an illustrious and complex figure of the eighteenth century European music, a great scholar and collector, composer and master of counterpoint who had among his students also Bach is Mozart. The Music Museum collects collections and testimonies of the time. In the800 the most illustrious names of the time: Rossini, Verdi, Brahms, Wagner, Puccini, Liszt, are intertwined with thePhilharmonic Academy.

Its history, its vitality, have meant that great historians have left indelible traces here, not only in music but in science, arts, architecture. Scientists like Galvani is Marconi, painters and artists like Morandi, Guido Reni, the Guercino, i Carracci, Leonardo, on which of course there is a legend that sees him painted here Mona Lisa; Giotto, of which the Bolognese fighting with the Pope unfortunately destroyed an entirely frescoed chapel that stood in the area of Piazza XX Settembre; Cassini that left us in the Basilica of San Petronio the longest and most important sundial in the world; Michelangelo , of which several sculptures remain, in particular in the Basilica of San Domenico; Napoleon, which has re-established the city from an urban point of view, Charles V crowned Emperor in the Basilica of San Petronio.

Every corner here bears witness to a glorious past, “Bologna is among the most beautiful cities in Italy and Europe. There is no city that resembles it and can replace it "Guido Piovene in I travel to italy.

How to orient yourself

Old Town

The area of the historic center is easily recognizable: where the city walls once stood there is now one bypass of avenues, interspersed with twelve doors leading to some of the main streets.

On the contrary, once you enter the center, finding your way around is not that simple. From the main streets, mazes of smaller streets branch off, among which it is easy to get lost, also for the architectural homogeneity of the city. The use of a map is particularly recommended, but don't despair: the area of the historic center is not that extensive, and from anywhere you can easily reach1 Piazza Maggiore.

With your back to the central station, take the Via Indipendenza, one of the main streets in the center. Going along it all you will arrive in the heart of Bologna: in front of you you will find Piazza Maggiore, with the unmistakable Fountain of Neptune, on the left via Rizzoli It's on the right via Ugo Bassi (these two form, together with via Indipendenza, the so-called zone T).

Taking via Rizzoli you arrive in front of two towers, one of the symbols of the city. From here the five main roads of the east area of the city: via Zamboni (which leads to the university area), via San Vitale, Strada Maggiore, via Castiglione and, from the latter, via Santo Stefano.

From via Ugo Bassi you move towards the west area of the city. Going all the way around you will arrive in 2 Malpighi square (don't be fooled by the fact that it doesn't look like a square!), from where via Marconi branch off (which will bring you back not too far from the station), via San Felice, via del Pratello (one of the areas to keep an eye on for nightlife), via Sant'Isaia and via Nosadella, which leads to the residential district of Zaragoza.

Neighborhoods

Bologna is divided into 6 neighborhoods:

  • Borgo Panigale - Reno;
  • Navile;
  • San Donato - San Vitale;
  • Savena;
  • Saint Stephen;
  • Porto - Zaragoza.

Where to eat

The Bolognese who want to eat well nowadays do not head towards the center, but in the surrounding villages, in search of quality restaurants that respect the culinary tradition. Among the numerous restaurants, wine bars, pubs and trattorias, the typical taverns stand out, representing, today as yesterday, the hub of the city's nightlife. Historical icons of the city, already before 1300 there were over 150.

In Bologna, cooking is a ritual and the table is a place for sharing.

The gastronomy is distinguished by the high number of traditional products consolidated over the centuries by the confluence in the city of the culinary specificities of students from all over the world. It is the first Italian province for the number of PDO and PGI products. The key elements of the cuisine are pork and egg pasta. Several typical dishes registered: the mortadella, sausage of medieval origin; the noodles, whose dough must necessarily be rolled by hand; the green lasagna, which owe their coloring to the use of spinach or nettle; the ragù, a skilful mixture of meat, herbs and vegetables that remains on the fire to boil for hours before being ready as a condiment; the tortellini, small in size and with a meat filling; the mixed fried, which includes meat, vegetables, fruit and cream; there cutlet, covered with ham and mozzarella; and the Friggione; but many others make up its specialties.

I cibi tipici della città sono:

  • I tortellini in brodo
  • I tortelloni di ricotta
  • The ragù alla bolognese (condimento per le tagliatelle)
  • The lasagne
  • The friggione - è un misto di cipolle e pomodori
  • The panspeziale (o Certosino) è il parente ricco del panone di campagna
  • There crescenta - è una focaccia che può essere arricchita da prosciutto crudo o ciccioli
  • There crescentina - è una pasta salata fritta

How to keep in touch

  • Via dell’Archiginnasio,
