The history of Rovigo, the origins of the city and also of its name, are still unclear today. The presence of Paleo-Venetian peoples is certain and also of the passage of the Romans since it is located in an area of passage between what in the imperial era were the roads that connected Rome to the north-eastern provinces of the peninsula. Do not forget the proximity to Adria which in Roman times was a thriving port. The first historical document in which the city is mentioned dates back to the year 838. In 920 the bishop of Adria had a fortification built to transfer the bishopric and escape the invasions of the Hungarians. I this period Rovigo is called Rodigo, Rudi is Ruuigo tracing the origin to the Germanic name Hrodigo. According to some medieval scholars, however, the name derives from the Greek rhodon ("pink"), hence the nickname of City of Roses. In this regard, Rovigo was also mentioned by Ariosto in Orlando Furioso.
