Tourist Attractions
- 1 Stara Trta. One of the main attractions is the Old grapevine. It is over four hundred years old and still bears grapes today. The grapevine is one of the oldest grape varieties in Slovenia, known as blue Cologne or black velvet (Žametovka). Their age was determined on the annual rings using probing methods and microscopic examinations. In 2004 it was entered in the Guinness Book of World Records and thus also recognized as the oldest grapevine still bearing grapevine in the world. Every year in October up to 50 kilograms of grapes are solemnly harvested and fermented into wine, which is drawn onto artistically designed bottles. It is exclusive because of its rarity, but its quality is said to be rather modest.
- 2 Mariborski grad. The City castle, built 1478-1483 under Emperor Friedrich III.
- 3 Glavni trg. The town hall on the main square.

- 5 Basilica of the Mother of Mercy (Bazilika Matere Usmiljenja, Maribor). The basilica in neo-Romanesque style on Partizanska cesta was built between 1892 and 1900 according to plans by the Viennese architect Richard Jordan. The three-aisled basilica has two church towers 58 meters high on its front. The pulpit has reliefs with images of the Latin church fathers Jerome, Augustine of Hippo, Gregory and Ambrose of Milan. On the roof of the pulpit is a statue of John the Baptist. The high altar with the miraculous image of the Mother of Mercy consists of 17 different types of marble. There are six side altars in the church. The organ, restored in 1992, is the work of master organ builder Josef Brandl from Marburg from 1900.
- 6 Narodni dom. Cultural events center with a monument to Prince Kocelj - built between 1897 and 1898 based on a design by the Bohemian architect Jan Veyrich.
- 7 Vodni stumble. Water tower, built in the 16th century and part of the Renaissance city fortress.
activities
shop
There are several shopping centers around the city. The prices are generally a little below the Austrian ones. Credit cards are accepted in most shops (Mastercard / Visa - mostly with a pin, not a signature!), Also paying small amounts with credit cards is not uncommon - Maestro is accepted less often, but is increasing steadily Most cashiers speak English, often also German (about 50:50 chance), the same applies to meat departments, for example. Bills over 100 € are sometimes not accepted with pleasure.

Practical advice
In Maribor, as everywhere in Slovenia, you can get very far with English. German-speaking Slovenians are also not uncommon. A few words in Slovenian ease the mood noticeably.
