background

Stockholm is the residence of the royal couple, the seat of a university and several colleges. The seat of the Evangelical and Catholic Church of Sweden is located in Stockholm. There are 14 islands in the city, which are connected by 53 bridges. The city center is divided into the districts Gamla Stan, Kungsholmen, Norrmalm, Södermalm and Östermalm.

Stockholm is a real tourist magnet in the summer when many locals leave the city and travel to their holiday homes. Bus groups from various nations populate the city as do backpackers on the way to the North Cape.

It doesn't seem exaggerated to say that Stockholm is one of the most beautiful cities in the world: ancient old town houses, countless cafés, ice cream parlors, well-kept parks, the sea, lots of sun, surrounded by thousands of archipelago islands. In addition, the sun hardly sets in summer.

A particularly accurate description of the city provided Kurt Tucholsky in his novella Gripsholm Castle. There he dealt with Stockholm in a nutshell with the words: “Stockholm is beautiful. Cities on the water are always beautiful. "

Map of Stockholm

By plane

There are three airports that are included in Stockholm.

  • The 1 Stockholm ArlandaStockholm-Arlanda im Reiseführer Wikivoyage in einer anderen SpracheStockholm-Arlanda in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaStockholm-Arlanda im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsStockholm-Arlanda (Q223499) in der Datenbank Wikidata(IATA: ARN) is the most important and is about 45 km outside Stockholm.
The cheapest trip to the central bus station and back is offered by flixbus from € 3.90, with 2-4 trips per hour between around 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. Tickets and timetable via app or flixbus.se, if required via free WiFi at the airport (registration required). The price of the ticket varies between SEK 39 and SEK 178 depending on the time of day. If you can't get the ticket at a reasonable price, you should consider the Flygbussarna for SEK 128. The route and travel time of the Flixbus correspond to that of the Flygbussarna.

The bus ride with the airport bus Flygbussarna to Stockholm (terminus is Centralen / Hauptbahnhof) takes about 45 minutes. Even at a later hour, the buses still run every 10-15 minutes. Tickets are available at counters (also at a later hour) in the terminal hall (e.g. Terminal 5, payment only with credit card), in front of the airport building (sometimes only at machines) or online / app. A ticket for an adult costs 128 SEK for a single journey (as of Sep. 2019) and for a return journey 215 SEK (online: 198 SEK), for young people (8 including 17) there are reduced tickets for 179 SEK (online: 178 SEK), families (max. 2 adults, 3 youngsters, 2 children under 8) pay 698 SEK (all as of October 2017). You can only pay by credit card on the bus itself. If you have to leave the bus before the end of the journey, you should contact the driver at the beginning of the journey, as the stop request has to be communicated at the push of a button and the stops are only called in Swedish (now there is a display in most buses) .

If you don't have to worry about your wallet and want to get to the city center quickly, you can take the express train Arlanda Express. The non-stop journey to the main train station takes 20 minutes and the train leaves the airport every 15 minutes. The tickets should not be bought from the conductor on the train, but at the counter or machine or again in advance on the Internet. The cost for adults is 280 SEK for a single journey and 540 SEK for a return journey, young people (8 to 25) pay 150/300 SEK (all as of Oct. 2017). In the summer months there are regular promotional prices, but they vary. There are also other long-distance trains to other cities in the country from a separate train station with access from Terminal 5. The train stops at two stops at the airport: South (Terminals 2,3,4) and North (Terminal 5).
If you take a taxi, Arlanda has fixed prices, no matter which part of the city you want to go to. The prices are around 420-520 SEK, with Taxi Kurir being the cheapest provider. At the exit of the airport the taxis are lined up according to provider.
  • The 2 Stockholm Skavsta AirportFlughafen Stockholm-Skavsta im Reiseführer Wikivoyage in einer anderen SpracheFlughafen Stockholm-Skavsta in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaFlughafen Stockholm-Skavsta im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsFlughafen Stockholm-Skavsta (Q664946) in der Datenbank Wikidata(IATA: NYO) is used by some low-cost airlines, e.g. B. Ryanair. Mainly this airport is a cargo airport. The airport is in the province Södermanland, about 100 km south of Stockholm, near the city Nykoping. Here too the one drives again Flybussarna, approximately every 50 to 60 minutes from 03:45 to 19:00. The journey time is approx. 1½ hours. The ticket prices to Stockholm and Skavsta are each SEK 285 (online: SEK 278) including return and SEK 159/139 for a single journey. To Linkoping and Norrkoping higher prices apply.
  • The 3 Stockholm Bromma AirportFlughafen Stockholm-Bromma in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaFlughafen Stockholm-Bromma im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsFlughafen Stockholm-Bromma (Q29863) in der Datenbank Wikidata(IATA: BMA) is located in the district of the same name in Stockholm. From Bromma mainly Swedish domestic flights are offered, but also direct connections to Brussels and Helsinki. From here there is the airport bus already mentioned (travel time about 20 minutes).

By train

4 Stockholm CentralstationStockholm Centralstation in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaStockholm Centralstation im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsStockholm Centralstation (Q54315) in der Datenbank Wikidata As a transport hub, it has rail connections to all major cities in Sweden. For German vacationers, the connection is especially important Malmo Interesting. Night trains with couchette and sleeping cars run here every day. The express train also runs X2000 during the day almost every hour on this route.

In the street

Stockholm is a big city and has all the advantages and disadvantages associated with it for drivers. A city center toll is charged on working days from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Trängselskatt. It costs between 10 and 20 SEK (approx. 1 - 2 €) depending on the time of day and day of the week. Vehicles with foreign license plates are exempt from the tax.

By boat

Various ferry lines lay on the 5 Södermalm ferry terminal and to the 6 Värtahamnen ferry terminals or. 7 Frihamnen at.
The Finnish shipping company Viking Line runs daily between Sweden and Finland. For those traveling from Germany there are partner ferry lines with which you can get to Sweden and Finland via Denmark.
Other ferries not only go to Helsinki, but also after Mariehamn, St. Petersburg, Turku and Tallinn.

Stockholm is also an en route port for passengers from Freighter voyages. These are mainly placed at the container terminal in 8 Frihamnen at. The way from there to the city by public transport is quite easy and inexpensive.

mobility

General plan of the subway

Stockholm has a dense network of local public transport. The most important network is Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (SL). The 24-hour and 72-hour tickets on offer can also be inexpensive for visitors. The 72-hour ticket costs 230 SEK (as of 2012). If you are in Stockholm for more than three days, you should buy the 7-day ticket. In contrast to the 24-hour or 72-hour ticket, the 7-day ticket is even valid for certain ferry connections. The SL's means of transport can also be used with the “Stockholm Card”, which costs 450 SEK for 24 hours (as of 2012) and includes free entry to numerous museums and sights.

Subway

Stockholm's metro system is that Tunnel bana. Three trunk lines with different branches cover the urban area with a wide mesh. Many train stations themselves are a real treat, and they often represent a total work of art in themselves (e.g. some of the stops on the "Blue Line"). A plan of the Subway network is on the Stockholm public transport website SL downloadable in PDF format.

Attention: On the escalators (also in department stores) the following applies: "Stand on the right, walk on the left!"

Bus / tram

Local public transport by bus works well. The bus shelters also offer good protection in rainy weather. Stockholm had an extensive tram network until 1967, but it was closed due to the switch to right-hand traffic. However, a new tram is currently planned. Line 7 is already in operation on part of the route. It starts on Sergels torg, a main square a little east of the main train station, and drives towards Djurgården, where the museum ship Wasa and the open-air museum Skansen is located. Historic trams are sometimes used on this route. Tickets cannot be purchased on the SL buses, coupons are stamped by the driver when boarding.

Hop on, hop off

Express train

With the Pendeltåg (S-Bahn) you can reach the outskirts of Stockholm.

Ferries

The Djurgårds ferry is part of the SL transport association. There are also various ferry lines that connect the outskirts with the city center. Stockholm's shortest ferry line, Södermalm - Hammarby Sjöstad, is a free and time-saving connection between Södermalm and the new districts in the south-east [1].

City tour

A is suitable for city tours Hop on hop off ticket, it applies to any number of journeys within 24 hours. It is also available as a combined ticket for boat and bus. Providers are avidcruiser or stromma

A visit to is recommended for going out in the evening / at night Södermalm, which is a bit of a trendy district. Life is mainly played out here 7 MedborgarplatsenMedborgarplatsen in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaMedborgarplatsen im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsMedborgarplatsen (Q114160) in der Datenbank Wikidata and its side streets. Vasastaden has established itself as another trendy district in recent years. The bars, pubs and restaurants around Odenplan and Rörstrandsgatan are of particular interest.

Östermalm is expensive. The most important shops can be found on the Stureplan. But also Berns Salonger at Nybroplan and Café Opera at Kungsträdgården are popular hotspots for the rich and famous.

Cheap

Stockholm has a total of twelve youth hostels, which are more expensive than usual in the country, but are still cheap accommodation in the Swedish capital:

  • 1  STF Stockholm - af Chapman & Skeppsholmen, Flaggmansvägen 8, 11149 Stockholm (City center, on a quiet island). Tel.: 46 8-4632266, Fax: 46 8-6117155, Email: . The af Chapman & Skeppsholmen- The youth hostel is probably unique: some of the beds are on a three-master and you only have a few minutes' walk to the city center. The island is rather calm. But it's worth it book early, because normally this youth hostel is always fully booked. You should book at least six months in advance if you want to stay here.Open: 01.01.09-11.01.09, 14.01.09-31.12.09.Price: adult bed from 185 SEK.

An overnight stay in a double room with a possible extra bed currently costs 320 crowns (around 35 euros). But you have to accept the unfavorable location directly on the motorway and a drive to the city center of about 30 minutes.

medium

  • 8  Mälardrottningen Hotel, Riddarholmen, 111 28 Stockholm. The famous yacht of the 1920s millionaire Barbara Hutton has moored in the harbor in Stockholm's old town - and now serves as a hotel. The view over Stockholm's waterways is spectacular and all the sights of the old town and the main downtown shopping area are within easy walking distance. Easy parking. Most of the cabins are single rooms with an extra bunk bed.
  • 9  Lord Nelson Hotel, Västerlånggatan 22, 111 29 Stockholm. The Lord Nelson is only five meters wide - that should be the Swedish hotel record. However, to deduce the quality from the dimensions would be completely wrong. On the contrary, the standard is actually quite high, and the 31 rooms (22 of which are single rooms) are small, but extremely cozy. This is mainly due to its maritime flair. In general, a lot in the pretty Art Nouveau building is reminiscent of a ship, even the floors are called "deck" here. However, guests - many business travelers - never have to worry about getting seasick. And when you look out of the window - or from the roof terrace, you don't look at the surging sea, but at the liveliest alley in Stockholm's old town.
  • 10  Best Western Hotel Terminus, Vasagatan 20, 101 25 Stockholm. The terminus opposite the main train station and the City Air Terminal is run by the owner's family. The old town, restaurants, shopping, entertainment and government districts are all within a short distance. The subway station is under the building. Nothing can be heard from the subway and the area around the main station cannot be compared with that of other capitals and large cities! If you value well-kept and central accommodation at a moderate price, this is the right place for you.

The hotel is located in very beautiful surroundings north of the city center in the Royal Haga Park. The breakfast room has a beautiful view of a lake. The airport bus stops around 400 m from the hotel.

"Other"

  • 14  Nordic Light Hotel, Vasaplan 7.101 37 Stockholm. Tel.: 46 8 505 630 00. Directly at the main train station and therefore ideally centrally located, this four-star hotel with its beautiful interior design turns out to be a sham. In reality it is more like a three-star budget hotel; especially when the hotel is full, breakfast is like a train station atmosphere and a fight for food and seats breaks out. The rooms are quite small. And, non-smokers watch out, non-smoking rooms are advertised, but not guaranteed, so that you are definitely forced to stay in a room that smells extremely of smoke.

security

Stockholm is a relatively safe city, even the intrusive begging in other metropolises takes place more discreetly here. Be careful with drunk people. In places with a high number of tourists, such as the train station and Gamla Stan, however, the usual petty crime such as bag and luggage theft can be expected. SL personnel can be found practically everywhere on public transport, for example at the sluices of the Tunnelbanan, who intervene in the event of problems.

Practical advice

Historic telephone booth next to the Tyska kyrkan church

International credit cards work largely without any problems, and the PIN is often required. Paying with a non-Swedish credit card is declined in a few rare cases, but legitimation is often required. A valid identity card is sufficient in practically all cases. There are no problems with machines. EU documents (passport, driver's license, identity card) are sufficient for almost all situations.

The most common language here is of course Swedish, but tourists do not need to learn it as practically every Swede speaks English fluently. For German visitors, reading various signs is relatively unproblematic, as Swedish is very similar to German. If there are any problems, there are many people on the street who are ready to help.

In contrast to many other cities, you can find benches everywhere in Stockholm to relax and linger. So you don't necessarily have to stop for a break somewhere. You can also find trash cans on every corner.

Skärgården

The Baltic Sea Archipelago (skärgården), is often found in the inner, middle and outer archipelago (inner, mellan and ytter-skärgård) divided up. In the inner archipelago you cannot see the open sea. The islands are large and forested and the waterways are quite narrow. In contrast, the outer archipelago is a transition area to the open sea. It has large bodies of water and small islands. Operates all year round Waxholmsbolaget Shipping in the Baltic Sea archipelago:
