Tourist Attractions

  • Toome mägi. The Toome mägi, the Toome Hill, a hill directly in the city center, offers a few of the sights: On it is the old cathedral, which is partly in ruins. Next to the cathedral is a square that is adorned with three statues. Among other things, the statue of K.E. Baer (discoverer of the egg cell), who was the subject of student resistance against the Russian occupation. Despite the Russian ban on this tradition, students washed this statue once a year (then at night). Karl Ernst von Baer is also known as the "Nordic Humboldt" and was probably the last universal scholar of modern times. He achieved fame as the founder of embryology and had a great influence on the fortunes of the University of Dorpat for a long time until he died here in 1876.

The Angel's Bridge and the Devil's Bridge can also be found on Toome mägi.

  • Angel bridge (inglisild). The Angel's Bridge probably owes its name to the similarity of the words "English" (inglise) and "Angel-" (ingel) in Estonian. The bridge was built in the English style. The Devil's Bridge (kuradisild) takes its name from Mr. Manteuffel, who designed it.
