Umeå is a city of Sweden.

To know

Being the capital of the Västerbotten, a province in the North of Sweden, as is customary in this nation, Umeå is also the reference point for the education, economy and culture of the entire region. The position on the E4, the great communication route in the north of Sweden and the Botniabanan railway line, allow you to reach the city in "relatively" short time if you leave from Stockholm. Umeå has the largest hospital in northern Sweden, as well as the largest university, with partners and collaborations with universities around the world and courses in several languages. The presence of an international and multicultural university has ensured, with the passage of time, the development of a lively nightlife and the proliferation of cultural and musical events in a traditionally silent and peaceful landscape like that of the unspoiled nature of Northern Sweden. Umeå was awarded the title of European Capital of Culture 2014.

Umeå has a subarctic climate with cool summers and cold winters. During the course of the year the temperature generally varies between -12 ° C and 20 ° C, with temperatures very rarely below -23 ° C and above. of 25 ° C. In particular, the hot season lasts from early June to early September, while the cold season runs from mid-November to mid-March, while the length of the day changes significantly throughout the year. Umeå is quite close to the Arctic Circle, at a latitude a few degrees further south of it. This translates into the absence of phenomena such as the midnight sun in summer and the polar night in winter; therefore, in summer there is an almost uninterrupted day lasting about 21 hours, while in winter the darkness never falls completely as there are about four hours of light

Background

The first written mention of Umeå dates back to the 14th century. The area of the city, as well as the northern part of Sweden, was populated by the Sami. The original nucleus of the city consisted of a parish and the Backen (or Kyrkbacken), the current residential area of Umeå. The presence of a river and the proximity to the coast favored the increase of the local population. In the following two centuries the city was inhabited by the Sami and made up of scattered parishes. However, Umeå was not built by order of the king and in the 1590s it lost the title of city.In 1622, the city was again founded by King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden. In 1638, the village had about 40 houses. It was razed to the ground by the Russians in 1714 and 1720. At the end of the Finnish War, in 1809 the Russian army, under the command of Michael Andreas Barclay de Tolly, occupied Umeå from June to August. On 25 June 1888 a fire devastated eastern Umeå and at least 2,300 of the 3,000 inhabitants lost their homes. In the restoration after the fire, white birch trees were planted in order to prevent the spread of more fires in the future. For this reason, Umeå is also known as "Björkarnas Stad", (in Italian: the "City of Birches") or "Little Stockholm" and the name of Umeå's ice hockey team, Björklöven, means "the leaves of the Birch".
