Pécs is now Hungary's fifth largest city with over 156,000 inhabitants and is located 208 kilometers south of Budapest. Archaeological finds indicate traces that are around 6000 years old and come from the Celts and the Pannonians who once lived between the Danube and Outside Rivers lived. Later, during the Roman times in the 2nd century AD, the present-day city of Pécs becomes the middle of what was then Pannonia Sopianae and is an important connection point for the Roman Empire economically and militarily. However, Pécs is mentioned in documents around 1235 and 1290 under different names. Hungary's first university was founded here in 1367. The Ottomans occupied the city of Pécs for 143 years from 1543 to 1686, today many beautiful, restored monuments from the time of Ottoman rule can be seen.
