background

Together with her Sister cityNew Ulm on the Bavarian side of the Danube, the city forms a double center with around 170,000 inhabitants. This results from the common past of both cities: they formed one city until 1810. Napoleon Bonaparte then divided them into today's Württemberg and Bavarian cities. From this time comes the quote: "Napoleon is to blame for everything."

Ulm is a university city. Around 9,000 to 10,000 students study at the university and the technical college. Perhaps this was one of the reasons why Ulm today has one of the highest concentrations of pubs, cafes and restaurants in Germany, around 600. These include numerous voluntary meetings and clubs.

mobility

Map of Ulm

Mobility in Ulm is not a problem thanks to the well-developed local public transport. Due to the large number of construction sites in the city center, the number of parking spaces is currently significantly limited. Searching for free parking spaces by car is rather idle for non-residents, as these are only available in small numbers on the one hand and are usually already occupied by local vehicles on the other.

Public transportation

Ulm and its surroundings are easily accessible via local public transport. In the city itself, two tram lines and several bus lines run from 5:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. every 10 (morning to early evening) to 30-minute intervals (early morning and late evening). On the nights from Friday to Saturday, Saturday to Sunday and before public holidays, there is an hourly night bus that serves the city area from 1.30 a.m. for a one-off surcharge. People between the ages of six and thirteen pay € 1.40 for a one-way trip in the city, € 2.40 (cash price) or € 2.20 (HandyTicket) for those aged 14 and over. Discounts are only available in the form of day tickets (€ 4.40) and weekly tickets (€ 21.30; prices for 2020). These cards can be obtained at bus stops or at the central bus station near the main train station. Further information is available from the local transport association THING.

There is also the UlmCard for € 17.00 (1 day) or € 22.00 (2 days), which offers many additional tourist services in addition to the use of public transport: Free entry to 8 museums, free entry to the highest church tower in the World etc.

The shipping service on the Danube is more of a tourist attraction, where in the summer months a motor ship is also a solar boat and a ferry service connects the cities of Ulm and Neu-Ulm. Travel times and prices can be obtained from the information board on the jetty on the Danube, near the Metzgerturm.

In the street

Ulm offers a good parking guidance system. Parking garages are available in a central location. It is not recommended to look for a free parking space, as the locals are already there and many areas can only be used with a resident parking permit.

motorcycle

A motorized two-wheeler can be used much better than its four-wheeled counterpart in city traffic. Free motorcycle parking are at dish and across from the Hauptbahnhofes (prominent point Volksbank) as well as in Fishing district at the inn Wild man, as well as south of the Wegkirche (Wengengasse / corner Sedelhofgasse).

By bicycle

Certainly the best individual means of transport in the city. A well-developed network of cycle paths, especially along the Danube, opens up the city and the surrounding area. In the pedestrian zone, however, the following applies: push! Bicycle lanes are on the way. The numerous one-way streets of the old town can be used almost everywhere by bicycles in both directions. The Radhaus, a special bicycle parking garage for safe storage, is located between the town hall and the city library.

Churches

In addition to the Münster, which has shaped the cityscape from afar, Ulm also has a number of other remarkable sacred buildings, such as the Pauluskirche, which is one of the first German concrete churches.

  • 1  Ulm Minster. Ulmer Münster in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaUlmer Münster im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsUlmer Münster (Q44562) in der Datenbank Wikidata. The cathedral shapes Ulm's silhouette and has the highest church tower in the world (161.53 meters). Construction began in the 14th century and was not completed until the tower was completed in 1890. Despite the name Münster, this place of worship was never more than a simple parish church. Inside the minster there are magnificent choir stalls by Jörg Syrlin the Elder from the 15th century. The tower can be climbed to a height of around 140 meters (768 steps) and, when the weather is nice, offers a wide view of Ulm and especially the southern area. On a clear day you can see as far as the Alps. Although the tower is made of sandstone and numerous sandstone carvings catch the eye, the masonry is mostly made of brick. With a volume of 190,000 m³ (according to the Munich Frauenkirche) the second largest Gothic brick church north of the Alps. Originally it was not supposed to be a five-aisled basilica with the same width, but a three-aisled relay hall. With the decision in favor of a very high tower, which was already made in the Middle Ages, the central nave was built higher, i.e. a basilica, as an optical counterweight. The lateral forces of the wide vaults at different heights brought the stability of the pillars to their limit. After a stone fell during a church service, additional columns were placed in the aisles so that each wide aisle became two narrow. At the eastern end of the north aisle, an imperial eagle that had already been painted was covered by the vault that was added later.

Castles, chateaux and palaces

Federal fortress

After the fall of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1815, the building of Federal fortresses decided. Ulm was one of the five locations. The 2 Federal fortressBundesfestung in der Enzyklopädie WikipediaBundesfestung im Medienverzeichnis Wikimedia CommonsBundesfestung (Q50709) in der Datenbank Wikidata was built between 1840 and 1860 and completely enclosed the cities of Ulm and Neu-Ulm. The Ulm fortress is considered to be the best preserved fortress, as all the others had to be razed or were badly damaged by the wars. Today, many cultural and social institutions, associations and clubs find a home in the numerous rooms. The association of Federal Fortification Association offers guided tours of the fortress. The 150th anniversary was celebrated in 2009, with the opening of the 12.5-kilometer fortress path on June 13, 2009, which allows a tour around the main wall around the federal fortress. A total of 32 boards provide information on the systems.

The fortress museum in Fort Oberer Kuhberg is open every 1st Sunday of the month from 2:00 p.m. and offers a guided tour. The fort can be reached by tram line 2 (stop School center, from there about ten minutes on foot) and the bus lines 8 and 14 (stop Upper Kuhberg, from there about a five-minute walk). There are signs.

All events are over www.diebundesfestung.de, the official website of the cities of Ulm and Neu-Ulm for the federal fortress.

It is always the location of larger open-air events such as concerts or sporting events. The Ulm weekly market takes place here on Wednesdays and Saturdays and the Christmas market during the Christmas season. The is still relatively close, north of Olgastraße Karlsplatz, which is more of a park than a square and, as described below, has a large playground, numerous benches, chess games and a meadow with a water surface. The local color is livened up by tramps in the summer who have a meeting place in the southern part. This is where the residents of the surrounding houses meet. The park can be reached on foot in 10 minutes from Münsterplatz via Platzgasse.

  • The Nabada (Swabian for bathe down) is the culmination of the Oath week in July. The beginning is the light serenade on the Saturday before the oath Monday, a light show on the Danube, formed by thousands of floating candles. Oath Monday is reminiscent of the former imperial city constitution (incidentally the oldest city constitution in Germany) and is celebrated annually on the penultimate Monday in July. The Nabada itself is a counterpart to the Rose Monday parades in Cologne or Düsseldorf. In addition, current regional or national political issues are presented humorously on ships, which then drift down the Danube from the railway bridge. Thousands of wild nabaders with self-made watercraft complete the spectacle. Numerous street festivals and concerts take place in and around the old town throughout the day.
