background

Neu-Ulm is a comparatively young city, the name of which was first mentioned in a document in 1814. As early as 1811 it officially appeared as Ulm on the right side of the Danube on. When Ulm was developed into a federal fortress, Neu-Ulm developed into a garrison town and in 1853 received a railway connection to Augsburg. It was granted city rights in 1869 by King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Interestingly, the city had had a coat of arms approved by the royal Bavarian government since 1857. The city remained a garrison town, but industrialization began to advance at the beginning of the 20th century. After Neu-Ulm since 1897 by a tram with Ulm was connected, it began to expand after the demolition contract in 1906 and the breakthrough of the ramparts made possible by it. The dissolution of the garrison town after the First World War made a radical reorientation of the town necessary. In the years to come, until the outbreak of World War II, Neu-Ulm prospered and developed into an industrial and commercial city. Nevertheless, in 1934 the military was again accepted. The Second World War ended for Neu-Ulm with the extensive destruction of the city. The city took on numerous refugees and an American garrison. Reconstruction began. The city continued to develop rapidly, and numerous commercial buildings as well as educational and cultural institutions were built. This is how the Edwin Scharff Museum was created in 1977. In 1991 the time of the American garrison ended. In the field of the former Wiley Barracks Since then, a completely new district has been created. In the course of "Neu-Ulm 21", a large-scale renovation of the station area took place.
