Munich Airport - Flughafen München

Munich Airport

The Munich Franz Josef Strauss Airport is the second largest German airport, the seventh largest in Europe and an important international hub. It is located 28.5 km northeast of Munich near the Erdinger Moos Freising. It has two terminals, numerous domestic and European connections as well as routes to North and South America, Africa, the Middle East and Asia - Australia is the only inhabited continent that does not have direct flights from Munich.

background

The airport currently has two parallel runways, each 4,000 meters long and 60 meters wide. They are arranged at a mutual distance of 2,300 meters north and south of the airport buildings and oriented from west to east.

A third runway has been approved since July 2011, it should cost a total of one billion euros, about half of which is for development and noise protection measures. In a referendum on June 17, 2012, 55% of Munich's citizens voted against the third runway. Since the decision for the city of Munich, one of the three shareholders in the airport in addition to the Free State and the federal government, is binding for one year, the relevant expansion plans have been stopped for the time being.

By train

Mockers have often complained that the airport in Erdinger Moos is the only German airport that can only be reached by air. The fact is the poor connection by rail: there is no direct train connection to Munich city center in regional or long-distance traffic, the projected Transrapid could not be implemented and the alternative express S-Bahn will certainly be a few years away.

Long-distance transport

No long-distance trains stop at the “Munich Airport Terminal” station, while regional trains do not stop in the direction of Munich, but only over Landshut direction regensburg circulate. In the direction of Munich, the station is served exclusively by the Munich S-Bahn.

The Deutsche Bahn airport counter in the central area "Z" of Terminal 1 is open daily from 7.30 a.m. to 10 p.m., there are ticket machines there and in the exit area of Terminal 2.

With the S-Bahn

The S-Bahn line S1 and S8 drive via different routes into Munich's city center and serve both the main and east train stations, as well as the central S-Bahn and U-Bahn stations “Marienplatz” and “Karlsplatz (Stachus)”. The journey time is around 40 minutes to just under an hour. A connection with the S2 to the east (Erding) is currently under construction.

Fares to Munich city center (main station or Marienplatz): With the single ticket from the airport to zone M (city center and suburbs), zones M to 5: price 11.50 €, or with the strip card (10 strips) for a price of 14, € 00, of which 7 strips have to be validated - this corresponds to a fare of € 9.80. For more than one trip by 6 a.m. on the following day or for several people, the day ticket (zones M-5) for € 13.00 (1 person) or € 24.30 (2-5 people) can often be the cheaper alternative.

Terminal 1

In the foreground the apron and Terminal 1, on the right the tower.

The terminal is the older of the two terminals and was put into operation in 1992 when the airport opened. It is used by all airlines that do not belong to the Star Alliance, as well as by Turkish Airlines. The length of the building is 1,081 m, the gross floor area: 198,000 m². The capacity is currently over 20 million passengers a year. The terminal is divided into areas A – D for arrivals and departures with 150 check-in counters, and area E only for arrivals. Since spring 2019, extensive construction work has been taking place in areas A and B for a planned expansion of the terminal, and airline counters and gates may change accordingly.

The most important airlines in Terminal 1 include those of the Skyteam and Oneworld alliances as well as Condor, TUI fly, Qatar Airways, Emirates and Eurowings.

Terminal 2

Overview of the entrance area of Terminal 2.
Lufthansa check-in counter in Terminal 2.

Terminal 2 has been in operation since June 29, 2003. It is from the Lufthansa and airlines of the Star Alliance as well as Etihad Airways and Oman Air, but the Lufthansa subsidiary Eurowings operates from Terminal 1. The pier length is 980 m, the gross floor area: 260,000 m²; The capacity is currently 20-25 million passengers per year.

The terminal is divided into level 03 for arrivals and level 04/05 for departures with 124 check-in counters. There are many quick check-in machines available. You just go to the machine and print out your boarding pass yourself. You can hand over your luggage at a baggage claim counter or independently at one of the baggage claim machines. The check-in machines can be seen in the foreground on the right, are distributed in large numbers everywhere and can be used by passengers of all classes. You should have the booking confirmation / reservation at hand, as passenger-related data is requested. If the ticket is registered as etix directly on the credit card, it is sufficient to insert it into the machine; the frequent flyer card stored in the PNR is also sufficient.

The restaurants and the viewing terrace in the upper area of the terminal can also be reached quickly from the departure area.

Terminal 2 satellite

A third terminal was built for 650 million euros: it is equipped with shops and restaurants around 600 meters in length, with a lot of glass in the facade, as a so-called midfield terminal located centrally in the eastern apron. As an extension of Terminal 2, the satellite does not have an independent land-based connection, check-in takes place in Terminal 2, the connection of the satellite terminal to Terminal 2 is via an underground train (PTS) in a 400-meter-long tunnel that already connects to the Construction of Terminal 2 was created.

Lufthansa and Star Alliance have a 40% stake, the terminal has docking options for 27 aircraft, the planned capacity is eleven million travelers a year and can be expanded to 17 million; the possibility of expansion to the east exists.

The terminal is divided into 3 levels: One for Schengen arrivals, departures and transfer passengers (K-Gates); One for non-Schengen departing and non-Schengen "clean" transfer passengers (L-Gates) and one for non-Schengen and unclean transfer passengers (arriving not from the USA / Canada or from non-EU countries).

There are also bus gates (J), which guarantee a faster bus transfer directly to the aircraft in the event of any delays.

Hall F

Hall F is located north of Terminal 2 and has a special status as an independent and somewhat separately positioned terminal: This is where the check-in of flights at risk of security takes place, especially the flights from El Al and Lufthansa, which Israel approach.

Hall F has its own baggage sorting system. Another consequence of the security requirements is that taxis are not allowed to approach the terminal directly.

The minimum transition times are given as 45 minutes, with some long distances to be covered (e.g. Terminal 1 to Terminal 2 or within Terminal 2 from the satellite to the main building and vice versa). Terminals 1 and 2 are "airside", that is, without leaving the security area, connected by a bus (approx. Every 15 minutes). You can find the exact description here.
