Monastery history

Interior of the monastery church

The first beginnings of settlements in the Tegernsee valley are documented by archaeological finds as early as the Stone Age. The origin of the later Benedictine abbey is a "cella", which is dated by legend to the year 746, the early 760s are now considered likely. In the year 752 the bones of St. Quirinus from Rome to Tegernsee. They made the monastery one of the most important regional cultural centers of the Middle Ages. The monastery was already an imperial monastery in 817 and was named first in the Carolingian monastery directory. In its heyday the monastery counted 200 monks, over a thousand possessions and had numerous factories. Under Abbot Bernhard Wenzl (term of office 1673-1700), the monastery was largely redesigned in the then contemporary Baroque style, only the monastery church remained in its original form. The monastery was abolished on March 17, 1803 in the secularization, the art treasures and parts of the last The library, comprising over 40,000 volumes, was incorporated into the state collections.

From 1815, the monastery buildings were converted into a palace and the royal summer residence of the Wittelsbach family, who still own large parts of the complex today. The high nobility were followed by other noble guests and artists, the beginnings of today's tourism in the Tegernsee valley. From 1820, the garden artist Friedrich Ludwig von Sckell designed the outdoor facilities around the castle as a landscape garden, which is still largely preserved today.

The "Herzoglich Bayerische Brauhaus Tegernsee" and two large restaurants emerged from the former monastery brewery.

The former monastery church now serves as a parish church.
