Tegernsee (lake)

The lake Tegernsee has a length of approx. 6.5 km, a width of approx. 1.4 km and an area of approx. 9 km² at a depth of almost 72 m. The shore length is approx. 20 km, the lake level is 725.5 m above sea level. NN. The Tegernsee, framed by the Tegernsee Alps, is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Bavarian Alps. It is fed in the south by the mountain streams Weißach and Rottach and has its outflow at the north end in the Mangfall in Gmund.

The Tegernsee owes its formation, like other pre-alpine lakes, to the excavations of the Tegernsee glacier at the end of the last ice age.

One possible interpretation of the name is the derivation of the old Bavarian word "teger" meaning large.

The Tegernsee and its entire immediate surroundings are under landscape protection.

Thanks to a circular sewer system (since 1965), the lake's water is very clean (quality class I). Motor boats are not allowed, but there are a variety of boat rentals / rowing boats.

In addition to its tourist importance, the lake is also used by three professional fishermen.

Fish stocks

The stocks of edible fish in Tegernsee are estimated at around 2.5 million whitefish, 100,000 char as well as around 40,000 trout and sandflies each. The fish are reared in the Bad Wiesse fish hatchery: the dams are caught in the lake in winter, their eggs are stripped and then artificially fertilized. In spring, when the water temperature and nutritional requirements are right, the young fish are released into the lake under favorable conditions.

Other food fish are the Tegernsee pike, the predator reaches lengths of over one meter in special cases under the favorable conditions in the Tegernsee, perch and also eels.

Authorization cards for fishing in Tegernsee are available in Tegernsee at Master fisherman.

Settlement pressure and the building boom

The highly attractive location of the Tegernsee Valley in the Bavarian Prealps, the many opportunities for recreational activities close to nature and the proximity to Munich make the Tegernsee a popular excursion destination but also a sought-after residential area. While only around a thousand people lived in the region in the Middle Ages, the population grew to more than twenty thousand in the late last century. The increasing demand for living space and infrastructure led to a reduction in the area in the valley that was previously used for purely agricultural purposes. In many places new settlements in the modern country house style emerged, which differed from the architectural style of the older Tegernsee farmhouses.

Due to the limited capacity of the circular sewer system opened in 1965, excessive development and the rapid growth of the population in the valley were slowed down from 1971 onwards. The building rights around the Tegernsee were mainly determined by the so-called population equivalents, which stipulated the maximum amount of wastewater that can be fed into a plot of land. As a result, an excessive burden on nature could largely be avoided, despite some interventions in the landscape protection area around the Tegernsee.
