background

The village was initially created as a settlement for the servants of the old Hohenburg and was first mentioned in a document in 1257. The name arises from the extensive gravel areas on the banks of the Isar: "lengi" for long and "gries" for gravel, sand.

As one of eight European locations, Lenggries has held the official title since 2009 Flößerdorf: From the 14th century on, rafting on the Isar became the most important source of income for craftsmen and tradespeople. Above all, goods such as construction wood and firewood, coal, lime and people are transported. At the peak of rafting in the second third of the 19th century, around 10,000 raft panels were transported to Munich every year. Only the construction of the Isar and Rißbach diversions for the Walchensee power plant in 1918–1925 meant the end of commercial rafting on the Isar. Fun rides for tourists from the north Wolfratshausen until after Munich However, they are still held on the largest rafts in Europe with a length of 18 meters and space for around 60 passengers.

The beginning of the tourism was the year 1924 with the completion of the railway connection over Bad Tölz to Munich. In 2008 the place had around 2,400 guest beds, spread over 6 hotels and many inns.

Other parts of the municipality of Lenggries are Schlegldorf, Wegscheid, Anger, Fleck, Fall, and Vorderriß.

With an area of 242.88 km², Lenggries is the largest municipality in Bavaria in terms of area.

The great importance of customs and tradition in Lenggries can be seen in two traditional costume clubs, the brass band and many music and singing groups.

The place is particularly proud of its top athletes in alpine skiing. Well-known names are z. B. Martina Ertl, Hilde Gerg and Michaela Gerg-Leitner.

The current palace building was built under Count Ferdinand Joseph von Herwarth from 1712 to 1718; from modern times until 1956, the palace was owned by the Grand Duchess of Luxembourg and her favorite place of residence for many years.
