First mentioned in a document in 1155 as "Tolnze", market rights since 1331. The districts of Bad Tölz are Kirchbichl, Ellbach and Flinthöhe.

The story of the Bath begins in 1845 with the discovery of the iodine springs on the Sauersberg. The "Aktiengesellschaft der Krankenheiler Jodquellen zu Tölz-Krankenheil in Upper Bavaria" was founded as early as 1860 and in 1866 the Kursaal was built in what is now the spa garden. Further healing springs were discovered in 1868 and 1870, and Tölz has been allowed to use the title bath since 1899.

The city owes its current picturesque cityscape to the Munich architecture professor Gabriel von Seidl in collaboration with the then city architect Peter Freisl, who, from 1903, replaced the previously dilapidated cityscape with new buildings and facade paintings (Lüftl paintings) in the current baroque form.

The townscape of Tölz became known in German-speaking countries as the backdrop for the television crime series "Der Bulle von Tölz" with Ottfried Fischer in the lead role.
