background

The Walchensee Mountains in the north and east of the Walchensee generally belong to the foothills of the Alps and Munich's local mountains, they are connected to the north Ester Mountains at.

The mountain region is not exactly defined, the western parts (Home garden) is also included in the Estergebirge, the dividing line here is the valley of the Eschenlaine from Eschenlohe to the Walchensee. The Benedict wall (1,801 m) is the highest mountain in the group, which is often referred to as a single mountain due to its prominent position in the foothills of the Alps. The northeastern part of the region near Bad Tölz (Tölz local mountains) with summit heights of around 1,200 meters is more of a low mountain range.

The Walchensee Mountains are bordered in the west and northwest by the Loisach and in the east by the Isar valley, to the north the plains adjoin, in the south the Lainetal, the Walchensee and the Jachenau. The maximum length from southwest to northeast is around 30 kilometers. According to the area proportions, the mountains are predominantly in the Bad Tölz district (Isarwinkel), the parts of the Loisach belong to the district Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Because of the high attractiveness in combination of the mountains with the lake and river landscape, the region is a year-round much-visited destination for vacationers and leisure activists.

getting there

  • The easiest approach is from north via the A95 motorway, Munich-Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Symbol: ASSindelsdorf, continue on federal highway 472 to the west of the region: In the east of the region, you can also take the A8 motorway, Munich-Salzburg, Symbol: ASHolzkirchen, continue on federal road 13 in the direction of Bad Tölz;
  • The South side The easiest way to get to the Walchenseeberge (from Mittenwald) is via the B 11 (Krün -Walchensee).

mountains

The Walchensee Mountains do not reach the 2000 meter mark and therefore do not belong to the high mountains like the one below in the south Karwendel Mountains and the Wetterstein Mountains. The mountain flanks are generally not too steep and for the most part wooded and therefore protected from the sun in summer, although the summit and numerous alpine pasture regions allow tree-free, wide views.

The mountain region is very well developed for hikers and mountain bikers thanks to a dense network of alpine and forest trails and is also well-visited. The climbs to the peaks are mostly mountain hikes, which are more physically demanding than those in the low mountain range. Surefootedness and a head for heights may be required on short sections. With mountain railways and easy approaches, some of the peaks are well attended even in winter.

Mountains in the sequence from west to east:

Home garden

Summit cross
Heimgarten, summit head

1 The Home garden (1,790 m, 47 ° 36 '45 "N.11 ° 16 ′ 51 ″ E) is the much-visited local mountain above Ohlstadt, as a vantage point, also one of Munich's most famous local mountains and the most north-westerly cornerstone of the Walchensee Mountains. From above you have a wide all-round view to the north of the foothills of the Alps and the mountain groups adjoining to the west, south and east (Ammergau Alps, Wetterstein, Ester Mountains and Karwendel). With the appropriate distance, even the Hohe Tauern (Großglockner]]) can be seen

Because of the low summit location, the Heimgarten is relatively easy to access, depending on the depth of snow, early in spring and even in late autumn. In terms of technical requirements, there are two climbs that are roughly the same as easy mountain hikes:

  • From the place Walchensee (approx. 810 m, Herzogstandbahn car park) a signposted and only partly steep mountain path leads from the sunny southeast side mainly through mountain forest past the non-managed Ohlstädter Alm in approx. 2.5 - 3.0 hours at approx. 1000 mH to the summit.
  • From the place Ohlstadt (approx. 700 m) and from the hiking car park at the edge of the forest on Heimgartenstraße (on the south-eastern outskirts of Ohlstadt) from the west side in approx. 2.5 - 3.0 hours with approx. 1,100 mH to the summit.
Heimgarten (left), connecting ridge and Herzogstand with Martinskopf and Fahrenkopf on the right
  • Because of the panoramic view, the technically easy and only little exposed one is often used Line crossing from the neighboring Ducal estate to the Heimgarten, in some places surefootedness is required, on the side to the Herzogstand there are some short and easy rocky passages (rope insurance). The mountain railway from the village is available at the Herzogstand as an aid to ascent and descent Walchensee available, so the tour around Walchensee - Herzogstand - Heimgarten - Walchensee is also very popular. Duration of the ridge crossing: approx. 1.0 - 1.5 hours.

Refreshments are in the for the season Heimgartenhütte possible directly below the Heimgarten summit (in winter only on nice weekends), at the Herzogstand there is the mountain inn, which is also open in winter (Jan. - mid-Nov.) Herzogstandhaus.

Ducal estate

Heimgarten left, Herzogstand right, Martinskopf with Herzogstandhaus in the middle

2 The Ducal estate (1,731 m, 47 ° 36 '48 "N.11 ° 18 ′ 32 ″ E) is the most visited summit in the region due to the year-round easy accessibility of its summit by mountain railway and also on foot, it is a classic four-season mountain.

From above you have a wide all-round view of the foothills of the Alps in the north, in good conditions Munich can be seen, in the south the view extends as far as the Zugspitze. The first summit pavilion on the promising foothills of the Alps in the Walchensee Mountains was created at the request King Ludwig II., the Herzogstand was one of his favorite mountains.

Refreshments are open all year round Herzogstandhaus possible below the summit.

The easiest climb starts at the Kesselbergsattel and leads mainly on forest paths to the summit in a good two hours. The old "driving route", built at the instigation of King Ludwig, is to be observed; next to the current road it is still clearly recognizable as a flatter and more winding route at the steep sections.

Ascent variant is the cable railway from the Walchensee to the Fahrenberg, a pre-summit of the Herzogstand.

Jochberg

View from the south of the Jochberg above the Walchensee

3 The Jochberg (1,565 m, 47 ° 37 '33 "N.11 ° 22 ′ 21 ″ E) is the striking summit in the north above Lake Walchensee. The Jochberg is, like the neighboring Herzogstand, an excellent vantage point with, assuming the appropriate weather conditions, a wide all-round view of the foothills of the Alps in the north and up to Rofan and the Karwendel in the south.

Boarding: In the snow-free time, the summit can be easily reached from the parking lot on the Kesselberg (850 m) in an easy mountain hike (suitable for children) and with just under two hours of walking time, due to its easy accessibility, the summit is also extremely popular and much visited. The ascent is mostly protected from the sun through the forest and is therefore bearable even on hot, sunny days, but the ground quickly becomes "greasy" when wet. In winter with fresh snow, the free summit area is at risk of avalanches.

There is a stop in the summer Jocheralm possible below the summit.

Raven head

Summit cross

4 The Raven head (1,555 m, 47 ° 39 ′ 1 ″ N.11 ° 24 '47 "E) is in the north of the region and is somewhat inconspicuous between the Jochberg and the Benedict wall positioned.

Ascent to the summit to the Rabenkopf from the Staffelalm

The easily accessible summit is a worthwhile hiking destination, also because of the several refreshment stops on the ascent and descent. From the summit the view extends all around to the Karwendel and the Wetterstein, directly below the summit is the Kochelsee and the lake landscape of the foothills of the Alps. Because of the watercourses in the approach (from the Jachenau), the cows on the alpine pastures and with some rocks as an easy climbing area on the summit, the Rabenkopf is also entertaining for children.

The fastest Boarding takes place from the hamlet Pessenbach (near Kochel) in about 2.5 hours on forest trails and mountain climbing. At the bottom of the route is the hosted one Orterer Alpe (1085 m) and below the summit the Staffelalm. Another and only slightly longer approach variant is that from Jachenau.

Benedict wall

Summit cross

5 The Benedict wall (1,801 m, 47 ° 39 '9 "N.11 ° 27 '58 "E.) is the highest peak in the region and, as an excellent panoramic mountain with a wide all-round view, is also one of the most popular hiking mountains on the Walchensee.

South view of the summit ridge

A striking feature is the rugged rock face to the north Tölzer foothills of the Alps with climbing routes of all levels of difficulty. The striking mountain is named after the monastery Benediktbeuern.

The Mountain ridge the Benediktenwand runs in a west-east direction, with the Benediktenwand being the westernmost in the chain of peaks. Eastern secondary peaks are the Achselköpf (1,709 m), Glaswand and Latschenkopf (1,667 m). The Hennenkopf (1,613 m) is slightly upstream to the north.

One of the five populations of lives on the Benediktenwand Ibex in the Bavarian Alps: The animals were actually extinct, but in 1959 an ibex had strayed here. For him, three goats were flown in from St. Gallen, the cornerstone for the current population of around 70-100 animals. Since the animals have no natural enemies apart from the harsh winters, they reproduce excessively and, in order to protect nature and according to strict rules, have to be hunted from time to time. You have the better chances of spotting an ibex on the quieter north side.

There are also numerous entwined around the mountain Say, they act e.g. of monasteries in Benediktbeuern, who have to rumble around the mountain in thunderstorms because of their non-godly way of life and also of unrecovered gold treasures in the interior of the mountain.

For the Ascent to the summit There are several routes possible, all of which are more demanding and longer mountain hikes, for the summit ascent you need surefootedness and a head for heights. On the south side, a little below the summit, there is a drafty log cabin as a shelter (not managed). As a managed base comes the Tutzinger Hut in question.

Benedict wall
Ascent to the south: Bichler Alm, path in Schwarzenbachtal to the right of the center of the picture
  • From the sunny and gentler south side of the Jachenau and from the hiking car park near Petern (approx. 740 m, 47 ° 37 ′ 3 ″ N.11 ° 29 ′ 56 "E) a forest path leads over the Langenecksattel (approx. 45 min.) and through the incised Schwarzenbachtal to the Bichler Alm (approx. 2.5 hours walking time). From here the path then leads over the Altweibersteig, first over alpine pastures and then steeply with short climbing sections in Schrofen slopes to the summit. Total walking time about a good three hours for almost 1,100 mH. The route is also popular with snowshoe hikers in winter, but the avalanche risk must be taken into account when climbing the summit.
  • A variant from the south leads from the village of Jachenau north along the Große Laine over the Lainl-Alm, past the waterfall and over the Peterer Alm to the Glasscharte. From there over the steep west ridge to the summit. Walking time 3.5 to 4 hours.
  • From the north and from the Alpenwarmbad in Gschwendt (a district of Benediktbeuern) in about two hours Tutzinger Hut (see ascent to the hut), the hut is located directly below the summit. From the hut, the climbing rocks on the north face are bypassed on a west or east ascent, whereby the west ascent is steeper, here the snow lasts longer even in spring.
  • Another approach variant is crossing the ridge from the east via Latschenkopf and Achselköpfen vom Brauneck (1,555 m, mountain railway off Lenggries) out. From the mountain railway approx. 3.0 hours walking time.

Brauneck

6 The Brauneck (1,555 m, 47 ° 39 '49 "N.11 ° 31 '29 "E) the local mountain is over Lenggries with the same name Ski Area.

Tölz local mountains

7 The Tölz local mountains (at Bad Tölz) are in the northeastern corner of the region and southwest of Bad Tölz. It concerns a number of hiking mountains, which, in terms of height and requirements with moderately steep climbs on forest and farm roads, are more likely to be classified in the lower mountain range level. The forest and alpine pastures region is therefore increasingly popular with snowshoe hikers, even in winter.

Lakes and bodies of water

The two large lakes in the region are the Kochelsee with motor boating in summer and the Walchensee, second deepest lake in Germany, fishing area rich in fish and popular surfing and diving area.

climate

The climate of the Walchensee Mountains in the south of the Alpine foothills is continental. Characteristics are the cold winters (mean temperatures in January approx. -2 ° C) and warm summers (approx. 16 ° C in July). Another characteristic are the western and northern reservoirs with abundant rainfall all year round and therefore also a high snow cover in winter.

Another specialty is that hairdryer, a warm and dry air current from the south that can cause sudden flood snowmelt in spring. Sudden and violent thunderstorms, including storms with storms and hail, are not uncommon in summer.
