background
The village of Benediktbeuern emerged as a settlement for monastery workers and monastery subjects and was first mentioned in 1160 as "Laingreb" (Laingrube). In the following years the place was administered by the abbey and was therefore always heavily dependent on the economic strength of the monastery. After secularization, the village became independent and in 1865 it was renamed "Benediktbeuern".
In modern times, in addition to agriculture, trade and industry, tourism has increasingly developed as an economic mainstay in Benediktbeuern.

Joseph from Fraunhofer (* March 6, 1787 in Straubing, † June 7, 1826 in Munich) discovered in Benediktbeuern the absorption lines in the color spectrum of sunlight, the basis for the in the middle of the 19th century by Robert Wilhelm Bunsen and Gustav Kirchhoff developed spectral analysis and today the most important instrument of modern astrophysics: After the dissolution of the monastery, the entrepreneur bought Joseph von Utzschneider the buildings and operated optical workshops and a glass smelter for the manufacture of precision devices for land surveying (telescopes). Fraunhofer worked for Utzschneider and perfected the grinding of the lenses. The dark lines he discovered in the sunlight refracted by a prism were an important aid. Fraunhofer is the namesake for the Fraunhofer Society, today with more than 18,000 employees the largest organization for application-oriented research in Europe and based in Munich (Fraunhoferhaus). The former glassworks can be rolled into one small museum can be visited.

The 1 monastery was founded around 739/740 by the local noble family of the Huosi with the participation of St. Boniface and Karl Martell Founded as a Benedictine abbey and was one of the Carolingian imperial monasteries. The monastery was of strategic importance and played a decisive role in the development of the region.
The monastery received a reliquary of St. Benedict from Charlemagne and thus became the most important place of worship of the Benedictine order in the German-speaking world until it was destroyed in 955 during the Hungarian storm.
From 1031 the monastery in Benediktbeuern was replaced by the monastery in Tegernsee from revived and flourished again in the 12th and 13th centuries. The focus of activity was goldsmithing and painting and, since the end of the Middle Ages, historiography.
In the 14th century the monastery lost its imperial directness, but still had an important legal position as the seat of the monastery court.
Today's baroque monastery complex, consisting of the monastery courtyard and the Meierhof, was built in the years 1669-1732, the monastery church of St. Benedict in the monastery courtyard was built from 1672-1686, the Meierhof from 1708-1718.

In the secularization the monastery was dissolved in 1803.
In the course of the dissolution of the monastery library, the Carmina Burana (lat., in German "Songs from Benediktbeuern", Wikipedia), a collection of 240 Vaganten pieces (spring and love songs, drinking and minne songs, moral-satirical content) which was probably in the Benedictine Abbey of Seckau around 1230 (Styria) or in Neustift Abbey (at Brixen), and from 1935 by Carl Orff were set to music. The collection is now in Munich in the Bavarian State Library.
From 1805 Baron Josef v. Utzschneider built a glassworks in which the famous researcher from 1808-1818 Joseph from Fraunhofer worked. The Bavarian state later acquired the monastery and used it as a barracks and remontendepot (young horses).
In 1930 the Salesians bought the monastery and renovated the buildings. The Salesians are a community of educators and priests founded by the Italian secular priest Don Bosco. Today around 50 religious still live in the monastery complex. In addition, there are two universities in the monastery buildings, the youth education center action center and the center for environment and culture as well as the Don Bosco youth hostel (this is the youth hostel with the most overnight stays per year in Germany). The costume information center and the home care information center of the administrative district are located in the Maierhof of the monastery Upper Bavaria.
