Schlehdorf Monastery

The exact founding time of the Schlehdorf Monastery lies in the dark of history, probably around 740 by the Huosi dynasty Benediktbeuern Monastery from, there are documents from the Tassilo time of June 29th, 763 and others from the following years, the monastery is one of the Bavarian prehistoric monasteries. At that time the monastery was still located directly on the lake shore in the area of today's boat landing stage, a field cross marks the location. At that time the church was still consecrated to the Franconian saint Dionysius.

The relocation of the one made before 763 is also documented St. Peter's Monastery from the pass of the old Roman road Scharnitz to the climatically more favorable Kochelsee no later than in the year 772. With the election of the Schlehdorfer Abbot Atto as Bishop of Freising (term of office 783-811) the monastery is henceforth an own monastery of the Freisinger Bishops led, located in the territory of the diocese augsburg.

The monastery was mentioned for the last time in 837; it was probably destroyed by the Hungarians in the 10th century. The reconstruction for the period from 1140 by Bishop Otto von Freising on today's southern outskirts is documented. Monastery life was revived under the Augustinian Canons, but it was always in competition with the nearby and economically stronger monastery in Benediktbeuern. From 1717 the monastery complex was relocated from the monastery green to the current monastery hill, the Kirchbichl, due to repeated flooding. The old system burned down almost completely in 1784.

During the secularization the monastery was dissolved in 1803, acquired in 1904 by the Dominican Missionaries of King-Williams-Town and has since been used as a base for missionary work in South Africa.

Parish Church of St. Tertulin, former Augustinian canons monastery church; The building was built from 1727 according to plans by court architect Johann Georg Ettenhofer. Due to a lack of money, the construction took over 53 years, the church building still reflects some elements of the Baroque inside and, however, with its austere facade and the cool interior, represents the transition from Rococo to Classicism;

The interior of the church was restored in 2007/2008, but has been accessible again since September 2008;
