background

Hofmark Church and former rectory

The Surname According to recent research, Bernried is derived from the "clearing of the Pero", and with finds from the 9th century, the settlement is one of the oldest in the region. The first documentary mention is the year 1120 on the occasion of the foundation of the monastery. For a long time Bernried was a farming and fishing village around the monastery.

First tourist beginnings as a second residence of wealthy Munich citizens in the village are already recorded for 1475 and 1535.

At the turn of the century, the war writer who lived here established himself in Bernried Karl Tanera (1849 - 1904) a small circle of artists, names and visitors are Max Halbe and Lovis Corinth.

The real one development von Bernried then begins after the Second World War. Until then the place has only about 700 inhabitants in about 20 small farms. Due to the influx of repatriates and the pressure of settlement from the nearby greater Munich area, the population is growing to over 2000 inhabitants. Decisive for the economic development in the post-war period was the construction of the Höhenried Clinic by the LVA Oberbayern and the settlement of commercial and technology companies (high technology, biotechnology), but agriculture is reduced to only 4 full-time farmers. In addition, tourism is becoming increasingly important.

Highlights in recent local history are the years 1984 with the silver medal in the federal competition "Our village should be more beautiful", 2006 with the gold medal in the district decision and 2007 with the gold medal in the state decision for the "most beautiful village in Bavaria" and in 2007 also a gold medal in the national competition "Our village has a future".

It was created from 1998 to 2001 Buchheim Museum on the grounds of the Bernried Park.

Since January 1, 2007, the municipality has had the official name "Bernried am Starnberger See".

The former monastery and today's castle was built in 1120 as Augustinian Canons' Monastery Founded by Count Otto von Valley and is located in the village directly on the shores of Lake Starnberg.
