background

history

Archaeological finds from the Bronze and Iron Ages prove the early settlement of the Staffelsee area. A fortified settlement was built on the Moosberg in the Murnauer Moos around 260 AD, which was abandoned around 150 years later. The place originated on the important trade route from Innsbruck to Augsburg and was first mentioned in 1150 as "Murnowe". The name probably comes from "Mure" the alpine name for a mud stream. In 1322 Murnau received market rights from Ludwig the Bavarian, who then in 1332 dem Ettal Abbey assigned. The Ettalische Pfleger lived in the castle, which is only mentioned in writing in 1324, but its core dates back to the middle of the 13th century. As the only market town in the area of the Ettal monastery court, Murnau was the economic center. Four annual fairs have been held since 1722. The citizens lived from long-distance haulage and passenger traffic, from local trade and little agriculture. From the late 17th century on, reverse glass painting and the manufacture of feather flowers emerged as domestic industries, and these continued until the middle of the 19th century. Often sold by the manufacturer himself, these folk art products reached far beyond Bavaria's borders.

Like all old Bavarian markets, Murnau was not spared from warlike incursions, plagues and conflagrations. Between 1619 and 1851 the place burned down almost completely four times. During the Thirty Years' War Swedish and French troops repeatedly invaded, and in the War of Spanish Succession the Tyroleans invaded. The loss of the district court in Weilheim and the effects of the Napoleonic wars plunged Murnau into an economic crisis after 1800. With the connection to the railway network in 1879 and increasing tourism, things picked up again. Murnau developed into a popular holiday and health resort.

The beautification association founded in 1868 laid out avenues and walking paths and expanded the lido. Around 1900 the first stately villas were built around the old town center. On the initiative of the architect Emanuel von Seidl, the house facades on the Upper and Lower Market, which were almost completely destroyed in a fire in the middle of the 19th century, were embellished.

The place gained importance for the artistic world in the years from 1909 to 1914, when many artists such as Franz Marc, Wassily Kandinsky with Gabriele Münter and the writer Ödön von Horváth settled in Murnau. The expressionist painters Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc founded in 1911 Munich the loose artists' association "Blauer Reiter", the core of the avant-garde of modern art.

In the course of the 20th century, Murnau changed spatially and structurally. In the 1930s, two barracks were built. Today's Werdenfels barracks served as a prisoner-of-war camp for over 5,000 mostly Polish officers from 1939 until the end of the war. Since the district reform of 1972, Murnau has belonged to the Garmisch-Partenkirchen district. The renovation of the town center and the establishment of a pedestrian zone in 2000 improved the quality of life in the town center, which has a southern flair and beautifully restored facades.

The frequent visits of other painters such as Franz Marc, August Macke and Marianne von Werefkin made it a meeting place for the avant-garde. Starting from the examination of the surrounding landscape, Kandinsky's painting developed into abstraction. The work sessions for the preparation of the "Der Blaue Reiter" almanac also took place in the Münter House. Münter saved the treasure trove of paintings by Kandinsky in a hiding place in the cellar about the time of National Socialism. The artist settled in the house in 1931 and lived there until her death in 1962, from 1936 together with the art historian Johannes Eichner. With the preserved furnishings and works of art, the house and the gardens convey a vivid impression of the atmosphere that prevailed here before the First World War.

Kurpark and culture and conference center

The park and the conference center not only offer a view of the alpine panorama around the Zugspitze, but also current works by local sculptors and cultural events. The outdoor exhibitions offer an insight into Murnau's art scene. In summer concerts by the Camerloher Music School take place here regularly.

Seidlpark

Today's Seidl Park in the south of Murnau was designed by the architect Emanuel von Seidl around his villa at the time. Together with artist friends, Emanuel von Seidl designed not only the park named after him between 1906 and 1913, but above all the townscape of Murnau. A school building - today's Emanuel von Seidl primary school - several private villas and the former train station building in Hechendorf bear the signature of the architect. In the park there is a population of old, tall trees, a pond overgrown with water lilies and many monuments. After the purchase of the park by the municipality of Murnau, the Förderkreis Murnauer Parklandschaft e.V. set itself the task of preserving it and partially restoring it to its original state, including Hirschenplatz and Friendship Hill, Emanuel von Seidl's favorite places.

Staffelsee

The Staffelsee is the largest of the three lakes in the Blue Land around Murnau with a length of 4.6 km and a width of 3.7 km. The lake is up to 40 m deep in some places. The water is very mild and boggy. Therefore, it heats up very quickly in summer and cools down quickly in winter. This makes it ideal both as a bathing lake in summer and as a lake for winter sports.

The lake has also made history with its seven islands: Celts, Romans and monks of the Middle Ages populated its islands. Archaeological development is a major concern of the market community, but has not yet been implemented due to a lack of funds.

The seven islands of the Staffelsee are uninhabited, with one exception: aurochs graze on the island of Wörth. They save the island from being overgrown. But it was settled by humans in the 7th century. The remains of a chapel bear witness. And so the facilities of the former Staffelsee monastery are presumed to be there. To reach the former monastery or parish church, the faithful made a pilgrimage on a long wooden walkway that led from the Burg peninsula via Jakobsinsel to the island of Wörth. The footbridge is no longer preserved, but the old posts can still be found north of the smallest island of the Staffelsee.

Murnau moss

The Murnauer Moos has a size of approx. 4,200 hectares. It was designated as a protected area as early as 1827, but not as a nature reserve until 1980. There is a twelve-kilometer circular hiking trail. At the parking lot of the restaurant Ähndl there is an information barn with interesting facts about the history and origin of the Murnauer Moos. Not far from the Berggeist district, on a hill, the panoramic and panoramic barn was built. A panorama board explains the moss and the surrounding mountains in the Wetterstein massif. On the Sem Bohlenweg near Westried you cross the moor landscape with heather and sparse birch and pine stands on wooden planks.

The main room, which is filled with light and vaulted by a mighty flat dome, is followed by a choir, which is unusual because of its transept.

The building has significantly influenced the development of Bavarian sacred architecture. The question of architects has not yet been clarified. Mainly the builders Enrico Zuccalli and Johann Michael Fischer are discussed. Architectural references to the pilgrimage church in Einsiedeln / Switzerland brought the local architect Caspar Moosbrugger and, as the executor of his plans, the otherwise completely unknown Father Roman Deschamps into conversation. The interior decoration comes from different eras.

For a church to be founded in the 8th century by St. Boniface or St. Magnus has no clues. The three steps to the altar area and the brick altar table date from the Middle Ages. The interior decoration includes late medieval sculptures. The high altar picture dates from 1663. An early Christian iron bell (3rd to 4th centuries), which is counted among the earliest sacred bells in Europe, is of paramount importance.
Monument to King Ludwig II
  • King Ludwig II monumentThe King Ludwig II monument in Murnau was commissioned by the Murnau citizen Bayerlacher from the Munich sculptor Prof. Hauptmann. Numerous specialty shops, street cafes and restaurants convey Mediterranean flair and invite you to stop off and stroll with a mountain view. In the center is the Marian column.
