background
The municipality of Oberammergau is a climatic health resort, lies in a valley widening of the Ammer and is one of the most famous places in the Bavarian Alps.
Famous personalities from Oberammergau are the Bavarian writer Ludwig Thoma, Ernst Maria Lang (architect and caricaturist of the Süddeutsche Zeitung) and Max Streibl (Bavarian Prime Minister from 1988 to 1993). wikipedia: Ludwig Thoma, Ernst Maria Lang, Max Streibl.
little chronicle
The founding of the place Oberammergau has not been handed down, a settlement in Roman times is documented by archaeological finds.
The name Ammer is derived from the Roman "Ambre" or the Celtic "Ambara". In the 9th century the country belonged to the Guelphs, here the name "Ambrigow" is handed down around 880. In the 12th century the Ammertal comes to the Staufer and then in 1268 to the Wittelsbacher and Bavaria, the Oberammergau Höfe become the Ettal Abbey and monastery Rottenbuch assigned.
The arable, barren area with an alpine climate and long winters was poor in the Middle Ages, secondary manual activities such as carving in the long winter evenings were an important additional source of income.
From 14./15. In the 19th century, trade developed on the route from Venice via the Alps and Oberammergau to Augsburg and Nuremberg, an economic boom began, and Oberammergau carters (the so-called Rottfuhrers) took on transport services. But the needs of the times such as fires and the thirty years' war with epidemics, mouse plagues and famine also follow. The raging of the plague in 1633 triggered the vow of the Passion Play.
It came in 1827 Werdenfelser Land (it belonged to the Bishops of Freising up to then), to the Wittelsbachers and thus to Bavaria, since then Oberammergau has been added to the Werdenfels district court with its seat in Garmisch and thus to the Werdenfelser Land.
The detailed Local history at the Historical Association Oberammergau;
Passion play
In 1633, during the difficult time of the Thirty Years' War during a plague epidemic, the Oberammergauers vowed that Play of the suffering, death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ perform. The first performance took place at Whitsun 1634 on a simple wooden frame in the cemetery above the still fresh graves of the plague dead.
The right altar in the church Church of St. Peter and Paul, is the cross altar with the cross in front of which, according to tradition, the passion vow was made in 1633. However, there is no written evidence for these vows.
The Urtext comes from a passion play from the 15th century and from a "Tragedi" by the Augsburg master singer Sebastian Wild and is made in 1674 with scenes from the Weilheimer Passion play supplemented and later adapted in various ways, but the staging has essentially remained unchanged to this day. The Passion Play has been taking place every 10 years since the fifth play year in 1680 and is now considered to be the most famous in the world.
The New passion theater with open-air stage was created in 1930 by Georg Johann Lang and Raimund Lang and was extensively restored in 1997. With a width of 45 meters and 4800 seats, it is still one of the largest open-air theaters in the world today.
The 41st performance of the Passion Play took place from May 15 to October 3, 2010, with around half a million viewers on the 102 days of the game. Tickets were available from April 2009 in the office, prices ranged from € 49.50 to at € 165.00; For information see www.passionsspiele2000.de;
Living Pictures 2010
The Ammergau Passion Play has been a specialty since the Baroque era Living pictures: Picture scenes from the Old Testament represented by people are inserted into the plot as a kind of still life and were models for many other Passion plays.
The stage designer for the 2010 production was Stefan Hagemeier. The basic color of the game scenes was blue-gray, the representations from the Old Testament ("Cain and Abel", "Joseph's Dream", the "Dance around the Golden Calf" or "The Burning Bush") were in the staging of 2010 in a departure from the previous tradition quite modern and colorful. The decision on the use of the images was made by the Oberammergau municipal council after a passionate debate.The playing time begins in May and ends in September, the performance from the afternoon onwards lasts a total of six hours, with a break for dinner in between. The prerequisites for the actors used to be very strict: the actress who played Maria was not allowed to be older than 35 years and had to be unmarried, only residents of Oberammergau who have lived here for at least twenty years are still allowed to play. In addition to the big figures like Jesus, Peter, Judas, Pontius Pilate and Maria, there are 120 larger and smaller speaking roles, all important roles are double-cast for safety. A total of almost 2500 people from Oberammergau, including over 500 children, take part on the stage. From Ash Wednesday of the previous year, the traditional "hair and beard decree" prohibits male players from visiting the hairdresser,
In 2000, the 40th performance of the Passion Play took place in a unique continuity through the past centuries. In the six-hour performance, 2000 locals showed amateur actors (with around 5300 inhabitants) as players, singers, instrumentalists and stage workers, the suffering and resurrection of Christ. Chief stage director was and is also in 2010 Christian Stückl, born in Oberammergau and director of the Munich Volkstheater since 2002, a total of 500,000 visitors were counted.
The Passion Play scheduled for 2020 has been postponed to 2022 due to the corona crisis.
Wood carving
Around the year 1520 is mentioned by a chronicler in the near Ettal Abbey an outstanding carver of the Lord God first mentioned in Oberammergau, in 1563 the Ammergau carvers received their own craft regulations from the abbot of the monastery.
The secondary occupation developed into a main trade for entire families of woodcarvers in the 16th century. In addition to biblical and Christian themes, the main motif for the carvers is the suffering Christ on the cross in a rather drastic representation. The custom of hanging a cross in living rooms and stables created a strong demand. The distribution took place via the so-called "publishers", who sell the carvings on foot in Kraxen and from permanent branches all over Europe even as far as St. Petersburg. From the beginning of the 18th century, carving is an important branch of business in the village, which can compensate for the decline in income from the trucking business.
The Ammergau carvings became world-famous through the American tourists to the Passion Play, who took them home as souvenirs from the end of the 19th century. During the National Socialist era, demand fell, wooden imperial eagles were carved as a substitute, but the crucifixes were reverted to immediately after the end of the war.
In Oberammergau, the real artists still carve by hand and do without machine milling, as is common with crucifixes south of the main Alpine ridge and also offered in Oberammergau. The whole thing then has its price, the exclusively hand-carved crucifixes are in the four-digit euro range, the total annual production of these works of art is estimated at around 100 pieces.
Ludwig Ganghofer's drama "Der Herrgott-Schnitzer von Ammergau" found its way into literature. The homeland novel is considered one of the best works of the poet and has been filmed several times.
