St. Coloman

Pilgrimage Church of St Coloman

The one that stands picturesquely in the meadows northeast of Schwangau and on the access road to Hohenschwangau (Colomanstrasse) 8 St. KolomanPilgrimage Church of St. Coloman is often overlooked by visitors because of the Neuschwanstein, which is already clearly visible from here, but is always worth a visit ({{Coord.

The holy coloman lived around the turn of the millennium and was an Irish pilgrim or king's son, his existence is reported in around 80 manuscripts. According to tradition, on his pilgrimage to Jerusalem he stopped at the site of the current Colomans Church.

The Beginnings of the pilgrimage and the first Coloman chapel are no longer verifiable, a first extension or a new building of the Gothic chapel is classified as the end of the 15th century, on August 8, 1495 the church was consecrated by Auxiliary Bishop Johann von Augsburg. Evidence of the importance of the pilgrimage is also the personal permission issued by Emperor Charles V to hold a market in Schwangau on October 13th every year on Colomans Day.

The Plague cemetery at the church was built in 1633/34 with the dead of the almost depopulated village. After the end of the Thirty Years War (1618 - 1648), the pilgrimage to St. Coloman revived and a further church expansion was necessary and completed in 1678: the old chapel became the sacristy new churchwhose design came from the then still young Wessobrunner Builder and plasterer Johann Schmuzer and was its second executed church. The church building is now considered representative of a pilgrimage church from the first decades of the Bavarian Baroque, created by local artists.

Particularly worth seeing inside is the baroque design with rich early baroque stucco and the three altars. The painting of the carved sacristy doors on the choir altar comes from Josef Obermüller and dates from 1733, the pulpit with the inlay work and the pews were made by Georg Fischer at the time.

The Colomansfest at the church is the largest religious festival in the region, it is celebrated annually on the 2nd Sunday in October with a festive service, blessing of mostly over 200 horses and a subsequent ride around.
