background
Schongau is located on the heights of the Lechumlaufberg on the west bank of the Lech in the Pfaffenwinkel and is the westernmost town in the administrative district Upper Bavaria.
The Foundation of the city took place around 1230/40 of Altenstadt out through the Hohenstaufer. Altenstadt is the "old town" and the former historical center of Schongau, the municipality is located a little west of the city of Schongau. In 1269 Schongau was pledged to the Bavarian Wittelsbach family. The Wittelsbachers controlled the Salzweg and granted trade privileges to Schongau, the prerequisite for the subsequent upswing of the city.
The greatest flowering time the city was then the subsequent Middle Ages: Schongau becomes a trading metropolis at the crossroads of the important trade route from Verona across the Alps to augsburg and Nuremberg (South-North) with the Salt Road from Berchtesgadener Land ins Allgäu (East West). The end of this heyday was the discovery of America and, as a result, a loss of the importance of these economic routes for Europe.
In addition to tourism, Schongau is also more modern today Industrial location with plants for the production of newsprint, stockings, electrical appliances and cheese and the processing of wood and metal.
