Marktoberdorf is a city in Ostallgäu. Since 1973 it has been the administrative seat of the district of the same name.

background

Oberdorf came under the rule of the bishopric of Augsburg in 1299. In 1453 the place received market rights. After secularization, Oberdorf became part of Bavaria in 1803. In 1898 the place name was changed to Oberdorf market, and when the place received city rights in 1953, the name became Marktoberdorf.

In the course of the regional reform in 1972, the formerly independent communities Bertoldshofen, Geisenried, Leuterschach, Rieder, Sulzschneid and Thalhofen were incorporated, and Marktoberdorf became the administrative seat of the newly created district of Ostallgäu.

Neighboring places are Biessenhofen, Bidingen, Rettenbach, Stötten, Seeg, Lengenwang, Forest, Unterthingau and Ruderathshofen.
