The Federal motorway 96 (BAB 96 or A 96, also as Lindau Autobahn known) runs in west-east direction (including the kilometering and counting of the connections) from the German-Austrian border on the Leiblach river, where it connects to the Vorarlbergs Rheintal / Walgau motorway (A 14; since December 15, 2019 from the German-Austrian border to the Hohenems junction, toll-free for cars) adjoins Lindau (Lake Constance) over by that Allgäu above Wangen in the Allgäu and Leutkirch to the cross Memmingen. There she crosses them Federal motorway 7 and continues over Mindelheim and Buchloe to the picturesque Landsberg am Lech. In its further course it touches the northern tip of the Ammersee and passes the western suburbs of Munich such as Germering. At the Munich-South-West triangle, the Munich motorway ring branches off to the north Federal highway 99 from the Munich bypasses north. The last part of the A 96 leads through Graefelfing and the south-western districts of Munich to the end of the motorway at the Munich-Sendling junction, where it meets the Mittlerer Ring (B 2R). The motorway is also the European route 54 and between the Austrian border and the Kreuz Memmingen also designated as E 43. The autobahn is part of the shortest connection between the metropolises of Munich and Zurich, although the one between Bregenz and the Swiss border is not developed. Distinctive places on and near the route are Lindau, Wangen in the Allgäu, Leutkirch, Memmingen, Mindelheim and Landsberg am Lech.

particularities
The original planning for the Munich-Lindau motorway connection was much more southerly. It would have used the route of today's BAB 95 to around Penzberg and should then run roughly like the later planned but abandoned A 98.
