A short section of the motorway forms part of European route 40 in the west and part of European route 331 in its eastern section.

background
Construction work since the 1930s has not yet led to the opening of individual sections. The first traffic opening took place in 1963 near Aachen. The further construction of the western section was complicated by numerous re-planning and has not yet been completed. Closing the gap between Essen and Dortmund is no longer to be expected; alternative motorway routes are available here. The eastern section between Dortmund and Kassel has been continuously passable since 1975.
