The small, tranquil town of Herleshausen is likely to be known to most people from the time of the division of Germany: the Wartha-Herleshausen border crossing was one of four border crossings for transit traffic to Berlin that can be driven by car. Herleshausen's importance for tourist traffic has not diminished today, as the place is located on the busy A4 motorway.

  • 1  Soviet war cemetery. During the Second World War, a camp was built near Herleshausen for sick Soviet prisoners of war, who were previously used as forced laborers for the construction of today's A4 motorway, for example. After the war, the mayor of Herleshausen, Karl Fehr, enforced against all opposition that the deaths in the camp were officially recorded, for which he received the Federal Cross of Merit. Prisoners of war known by name were buried in the cemetery in 1593, the cemetery is still maintained today.
