Federal motorway 43 - Bundesautobahn 43

Bundesautobahn 43 number.svg
Federal motorway 43

The Federal motorway 43 (BAB 43 or A 43) leads from Muenster (with connection to the A 1) in north-south direction until after Wuppertal, while on the way she has numerous intersections with transverse motorways. There are also striking places along the 95 km long route Recklinghausen, Bochum and Witten.

background

Federal motorway 43

The A 43 is a relief motorway for the A 1, which leads further east into the Ruhr area. It is now well over 30 years old - the last section between Nottuln and Haltern-Lavesum was closed in 1981 - and has to be partially adapted to the current traffic conditions, so that some sections are or have already been renovated. In particular, the connection to the A1 near Münster-Süd was rebuilt in 2008 so that it is now possible to change the motorway quickly and in two lanes to the north.

Regions

The Federal motorway 43 starts in the south of the city Muenster and leads through the south on the journey Münsterland, the Hohe Mark Nature Park, the middle one Ruhr area and the foothills of the Sauerlandes until Bergisches Land at Wuppertal.

particularities

In the past you could have landed on the autobahn between Senden and Dülmen, but today the "makeshift airfield in case of defense" has been dismantled.

Relatively many U-boards (information boards in typical brown) are attached to the short motorway.

traffic

in the Ruhr area the motorway is very prone to congestion, especially in the section between Recklinghausen and Bochum. There is a traffic-dependent inflation control ("Only one car when red" at the so-called "gatekeeping lights" on the motorway access) and corresponding speed regulations. Since 2016, the motorway between Recklinghausen and Bochum has been expanded in sections to six lanes - the related construction sites are causing additional traffic diversions and problems.

The Ruhr area has had a uniform since 2012 Environmental zone, of the the motorways are excluded as transit roads. As soon as you leave, however, these increasingly tightening regulations apply. Since January 1st, 2012 only cars with badges are allowed to enter the zone, since the beginning of 2013 only cars with yellow or green badges and from July 2014 only those with green badges will be allowed.

The entire highway is in North Rhine-Westphalia and is therefore of Roads NRW supervised. General information about the motorway is available on the Page to A43, Information on construction sites on the Service pages. Current traffic jam information can also be received via the regional radio station WDR or in Internet can be retrieved. There is also a very well functioning one for the area in the Ruhr area Congestion forecast (30min and 60min).

A traffic control system operates between Nottuln and Münster-Süd and from Sprockhövel to the south.

Route

Within a few kilometers from the exits there are often restaurants, hotels, shops, sights and other things that are worth leaving the motorway.

The route is described from north to south (direction of travel south = Pfeil unten.svg), the kilometer values (only approximate information) are based on the official information from south to north, the regions are not precisely located.

Münsterland

The Münsterland is a heavily used agricultural region that has a lot to offer historically with its palaces and castles. Cycling is highly valued both traditionally and touristically, but the waterways are also noteworthy. The solid medium-sized companies ensure a healthy economy with relatively low unemployment. Muenster is the eponymous city in the center.

Beginning of the A 43 near Münster, at the top the B 51 arrives, at the bottom Weseler Straße ends as a motorway feeder

The one originally built as a shamrock 1 Cross Münster-Süd has now been adapted to the increased traffic figures (approx. 60,000 vehicles / day) by means of a throw from the A 43 northbound onto the A 1. However, you can no longer use it to turn around, this applies to the direction of Münster on the A 43 and the direction of south on the A 1.

Attention: The radar warning sign 80 km / h in the turning lane onto the A 1 in the direction of Northern Germany is not there for nothing.

Decision: The route over the A 43 is only 6.4 km longer than the route over the A 1. Depending on the traffic situation, one or the other route is worthwhile. From the Ruhr area there are also several possibilities to revoke the decision for a motorway.

The exit is so close to the cross that it has the same lane and number and is regularly blocked in the event of a backlog. It leads to the country road 654 "Castroper Hellweg", which connects Bochum-Nord, -Harpen and the Scheffield Ring. The latter goes as a ring south around the whole city center of Bochum around. km 23.2 - Symbol: AS 17 Symbol: KNcross Bochum A40

Advertising sign for the Ruhrpark

At the 8 Cross Bochum crosses the Ruhr Expressway A 40. The most important east-west route in the Ruhr area, also jokingly called "Ruhrschleichweg", leads to the east Bochum-Werne, Lütgendortmund and Dortmund with connection to the A 45. In the west it goes over Bochum, eat, Mülheim, Duisburg except for the left side of the Rhine Moers, Neukirchen-Vluyn, Kempen and Wachtendonk to the border crossing Straelen (Netherlands). In the Ruhr area there are always several departures per city.

The is next to the cross and clearly visible due to the neon sign 6 RuhrPark, a shopping and leisure center. It can be reached from the A 43 if you take the A 40 in the direction of Dortmund and do not even leave the access lane, but immediately take the next exit 39 "Bochum-Werne". In the RuhrPark there is a food and technology supermarket, a partially covered shopping street with numerous shops, a cinema center, McDonalds and other fast food chains, free parking spaces and a petrol station. Next door is the "MediTherme" sauna / wellness area.

If you drive past the entrance to the RuhrPark and a short distance further on Werner Straße you will come to the 15  Harpen ponds, where you can take a leisurely stroll away from the hustle and bustle. Alternatively, the tip: Park at the MediTherme and from there walk the 2 km long circular route.

Attention: If you want to drive north at Bochum-Gerthe, you have to get into the lane at the cross, as both use the same lane, later you cannot cross over.

  • The 10 Ümminger See is another, quickly accessible recreational area right next to the A 43, to be approached via Industriestrasse. One lap directly along the lake is 2km. Parking spaces are located in the north of the lake, the one there Suntum's yard is however closed since the end of 2012.

km 19.0 - Symbol: AS 19 Symbol: KNcross Bochum/Witten A44 B226

At the 10 Cross Bochum / Witten that ends, so to speak A 44as you only have to follow the B 226 to the west Bochum (and to the Opel plant I). Even to the east it is only about 10 km long, but an important feeder over Witten to the motorway triangle Dortmund/ Witten where it goes to the A 45.

Important: Kreuz Bochum / Witten and the Bochum-Querenburg exit have a common turning lane, which is why they also have the same exit number. If you want to exit from the north at Querenburg, you have to use the turning lane before the Bochum / Witten intersection and, conversely, from the south for the exit at the intersection you have to take the turning lane at Querenburg!

Attention: the turning lanes have solid road markings, so classify them correctly immediately!

Sauerland

Bergisches Land

km 1,3[1] - Symbol: AS 23 Symbol: KNKreuz Wuppertal-Nord A1 A46

trips

Hier schließt sich also der Kreis, wer die A 1 meiden wollte und deshalb die A 43 gefahren ist kommt hier wieder auf die alte Strecke. Von Münster-Süd bis Wuppertal-Nord ist die A 1 auch nur 6,4km kürzer.

Fußnote(n)
