background
To be there Oer is an expansion letter, so that the place name "Oor-Erkenschwick" is pronounced (not "Ör").
The Parish Oer consisted of the village and Alt-Oer as well as some settlements in the area (Siepen, Sinsen, Flaesheim, Leven, Hamm, Bossendorf and Huppelswick), which now belong to neighboring communities. The Peasantry small (Lüttelen Erkensic) and Groß-Erkenschwick For a long time there were only small settlements of farms, some of which belonged to St. Peter in Recklinghausen, partly to the Flaesheim Abbey (today Haltern am See) belonged. Only with industrialization and especially with mining did the population grow rapidly. In 1926 the community "Oer-Erkenschwick" was founded, in 1953 it received city rights. An important district is still Rape with the center stone ribs.
The urban area consists of about half of the settlements (in the south) and a large part of the Haard (in the north), a forest area in the Hohe Mark Nature Park.
