The city Recklinghausen is the center of the northern Ruhr area in North Rhine-Westphalia. It gained nationwide fame as a cultural city as the venue for the Ruhr Festival. It is now well known beyond the region due to its comparatively well-preserved old town, which is well worth seeing.

By bus

Bus transport
Bus traffic in Recklinghausen (operation: Vestic trams) with over 30 lines serves large parts of the city every 10 to 60 minutes. The central stop is the Bus station at the main train station. All in all - especially at rush hour - you should expect that the timetables cannot always be fully adhered to, as the buses and cars sometimes only make slow progress on the busy streets. - 1 Provost Church of Saint Peter, Church square 2a. The oldest church in the city and Vest Recklinghausen is St. Peter's Church, north of the market in the old town. Like its two predecessor buildings, the church is probably located on the site of a former Carolingian royal court and dates from 1247. Originally in the late Romanesque style, it was later extended in the Gothic style and houses several sights with the late Gothic tabernacle, the Christ corpus destroyed in the war and the baroque high altar. This is one of the reasons why the church, which has a two-bay, three-aisled late Romanesque hall with a transept that is only about the width of the nave and a 75 meter high tower, is considered one of the most beautiful in the region. When looking at the west side of the tower, the attentive observer may notice that an old cannonball from the First World War is still stuck in the walls.
- 2 Guest church, Heilig-Geist-Strasse 7.
The guest church (formerly known as "Gasthaus zum Heiligen Geist", still often called "Heilig-Geist-Kirche") is one of the three churches within the ramparts and at the same time the smallest Catholic church in the city. The church was built around 1403 and emerged from a poor house or hospital. The altar blocks from the early 15th century are particularly worth seeing. - 3 High school church, Steinstrasse. Located on Steinstrasse and today connected to the Petrinum grammar school, the building was consecrated as a religious church of the Virgin Mary from around 1658. The hall building has been part of the Recklinghausen Franciscan monastery since its completion and was last expanded in the 19th century in the classical style.
- 4 St. Paul, Paulusstrasse. The largest sacred building in the city has a large vaulted hall and an altar that is well worth seeing.
- 5 Gustav Adolf Church, Herner Strasse 8. The oldest and largest Protestant church in Vest Recklinghausen. The choir windows by the renowned glass artist Hans Gottfried von Stockhausen are well worth seeing. The church is located south of the cattle gate and thus (from an earlier point of view) outside the city; The reason for this is that the city and Vest Recklinghausen remained almost completely Catholic during the Reformation due to their affiliation with a high school church in Cologne. - 6 Castel Sant'Angelo, Augustinessenstrasse 10. The electoral Cologne governor and judge Clamor Constantin Münch had a residence built in the old town in 1701. The building initially consisted of a manor house and an adjoining service wing. The symmetrical building shows elements of the Italian Renaissance with the arched portal flanked by pilasters and rosettes and a blown gable above it. In 1712 Münch bought part of the medieval city wall. He had the southern watchtower Stephansturm integrated into the west wing, which was built until 1715. This made the complex three-winged, so that an inner courtyard was built in the south facing Augustinessenstrasse. Behind the manor house a garden stretches along the old city wall to the second watchtower. After Lugwig-Prosper von Arenberg made Recklinghausen a residential town in 1802, Castel Sant'Angelo became the ducal residence - the last "real" resident of the complex was Hofkammerpräsident Russel, who moved out in 1895. Due to the crises and wars in the 20th century, the building was used again and again and has been a hotel since 1950. Visitors should definitely take a look at the inner courtyard with fountain and angel figure, if possible also inside. - 7 Town hall building, Rathausplatz 1. In contrast to the three previous buildings from 1256, 1505 and 1847, the fourth town hall building (1908) did not choose the old town market as the place for the administrative building, but instead had the building erected on a previously "open meadow" outside the Wallring. This not only meant more space for the house itself, the choice of location also reflected the newly gained self-confidence of the independent industrial city. Analogies between the Recklinghausen town hall (and other buildings) on the wall in front of the city and the magnificent buildings on the Wiener Ring are recognizable and were desired. The Recklinghausen town hall is a representative of the "picturesque" town hall type because the building is asymmetrical and irregular. Built in the "typically German" neo-renaissance style for the time and provided with loggias, balconies and crowned gables, it was an expression of the Wilhelmine era. - 8 Gravemann's court, Kunibertistraße 16. The "Gravemanns Hof" building is a half-timbered house from the 16th century and, after the last city fire, the oldest building in Recklinghausen. The former farm house, located on an important traffic route to Dortmund, was built on the so-called Kampgraben, which in turn was the remains of an even older farm complex. The property, including the building that has been preserved to this day, was under the authority of the Liebfrauenstift Essen for centuries. The house, painted in a striking red, is one of the comparatively large number of half-timbered buildings in Recklinghausen, but one of the few that has retained its facade and is in a relatively original condition.
- 9 Ruhrfestspielhaus, Otto-Burrmeister-Alle 1. A house has a very special meaning for the city. Built as the "home" of the Ruhrfestspiele, it has developed into an extraordinary cultural center since it opened in 1965, in which many exhibitions, performances or other events take place outside of the festival season (most recently in March 2017, when the comedy award "Hurz" was based on this was awarded to the Recklinghäuser Hape Kerkeling). - 11 Stephansturm / city wall, Wallring. In the Middle Ages, the city was surrounded by walls, ramparts and moats. - 13 Former miners' hospital, Westerholter way. The house was built in 1906 as the second own hospital of the Knappenverein and is thus the oldest hospital in the city (if you count today's Knappschaftskrankenhaus as a "successor"). Originally only intended for men, the house had space for over 200 beds. Today it is used as the headquarters of a nationwide health insurance company. From an architectural point of view, the building stands out due to its size and rich decorations. The arrangement with a large transverse structure and two wings at its ends is similar to that of a castle - this was exactly what was intended. The facade designs are modeled on the castle in Münster and to this day the building is less reminiscent of its original, rather profane use, but rather radiates a certain splendor. - 14 Still's villa, Kaiserwall 21. The villa was designed as a bank in 1907 by the architect Otto Müller-Jena, who was also responsible for the town hall. The three-storey house on Wall served the entrepreneur Carl Still as his home and company headquarters from 1928 - hence the "official unofficial" name. The sculpture portal with Hermes (Greek god of trade) and beekeeper (god of diligence) still indicates the ideals of the time of industrialization. In addition, the city administration uses the building under the name "Stadthaus E" - by the way, the Mayor of Recklinghausen has his offices here. - 15 Colonies, Hibernia Street. In the East Quarter, but also elsewhere, in Recklinghausen you can find the colonies "typical" for the Ruhr area, that is, collieries. Streets and squares
- 29 Old town market. The old town market (or in short: market) is the central square of Recklinghausen's old town and the center of urban life in the city. Since the Middle Ages, the square has been the location of the first three town halls in Recklinghausen and a place for markets, public rallies and events. The almost square square is almost exactly in the middle of the almost circular old town and is the intersection of several shopping streets, such as the wide street, Kunibertistrasse, Schaumburgstrasse or Great money road. Together with the Karstadt and Hettlage department stores (the two oldest in town, both around 1890), the market itself is part of the pedestrian zone. Even if building sins of the 1950s and 1960s destroyed the original buildings in some places, many old town houses from the 15th to 19th centuries, some with rich decorative facades, line it on the north and west sides. Whether in winter with the Christmas market and ice rink or in summer with markets and events (e.g. international marketplace jumping): the marketplace has been popular and lively since the war. - 30 Kunibertistrasse. Actually, Kunibertistraße, which used to be a main connection to Dortmund and was used by cars until the 1960s, is no more than one of the city's main shopping streets with many retail stores. Those interested in architecture can also admire one or the other beautiful decorative facade of the houses. On a tour of the old town, visitors will find that they will walk along it more than once.
- 31 Wallring. The medieval city fortifications, which were supplemented by moats and a total of 16 wall towers, increasingly lost their original meaning from 1800 in view of the beginning industrialization, so that the wall, which had become an obstacle, was increasingly demolished and the stone material was used for other projects. The expansion into the later Wallring began with the planting of poplars, later maple trees and linden trees along the carriage paths, from 1850 a continuous paved promenade for walkers was created from the avenues along the ring. Following the models of Vienna (1858 to 1874), Dortmund (1860–1874) and Cologne (1881–1886), from 1885 onwards Recklinghausen began to expand the urban space beyond the old borders of the walls and to create a ring road system . This was completed by 1910 under the direction of the city planner Hermann Josef Stübben and provided with a rainproof pavement for automobiles. In keeping with the goal of a ring system, the town hall (1908) and the Prussian district building (1905) were the first two important administrative buildings with splendid functions. In the years and decades that followed, further city villas and buildings with representative facades were added. To this day, the wall, which is partly built with seven lanes as a main street, was and is not only a street, but also an urban development with a certain representative function. This is not the only reason why outsiders should drive around the Wallring at least once, on which modern (service) buildings for banks, administrations or other facilities have been erected. Interesting by the way: Recklinghausen's town history can be "read off" on the wall, as it was named counterclockwise after the rulers who ruled Recklinghausen and the region over the years - Grafenwall, Kurfürstenwall, Herzogswall, Königswall and Kaiserwall.
- 32 church Square. Der Platz, der bis vor wenigen Jahren noch als Parkplatz genutzt wurde und anschließend Baustelle war, ist der Geburtsort der Stadt. Hier lag vor über 1000 Jahren eine (königliche) Hofanlage, aus der sich später Recklinghausen entwickelte. Bei Grabungen wurden zudem alte Überreste von Häusern und Brunnen freigelegt, welche jetzt als helle Sandsteinumrisse im neuen Pflaster noch zu erkennen sind. Der Platz wird als Weihnachtsmarkt genutzt und befindet sich unter der Petruskirche in der Mitte der Altstadt. Zusammen mit der Kirche und den Museen am Platz bietet er sich als "Pausenplatz" für Besucher und Berufstätige an.
- 33 „Wallnussbaumplatz”, Münsterstraße/Im Rom. Am Platz unter dem Wallnussbaum im Viertel „Krim” kann man im Sommer wunderbar relaxen. In uriger Umgebung kann man bei einem Getränk aus den zahlreichen Cafés in der Nähe abseits der Haupteinkaufsstraßen entspannen. Tipp: Leckere Speisen gibt es direkt gegenüber des Platzes im „Eckstein”.

- 34 Landschaftspark Hoheward, Stadtgrenze Recklinghausen/Herten. Großes renaturiertes Areal mit zwei Halden, Hoppenbruch (Windrad mit Skulpturen, MTB Cross Country/Freeride-Rundstrecke 3,5 km) Hoheward (Obelisk als Sonnenuhr, Horizontobservatorium, Drachenbrücke, umlaufende Balkonpromenade). Letztere wird immer noch aufgeschüttet. Zugänge befinden sich in Herten: Am Handweiser/Ewaldstraße/Im Emscherbruch und in Recklinghausen: Cranger Straße. Neue Horizonte.Geöffnet: Frei zugänglich.
- 35 Tierpark Recklinghausen, Otto-Burrmeister-Allee 1. 10.000 qm großer Tierpark inmitten des Stadtgartens mit über 600 Tieren, von Agaporniden bis Zebrafinken und einem Streichelzoo. Bequem zu Fuß vom Festspielhaus zu erreichen. Observatory.Geöffnet: Mo–So: 9–18 Uhr.Price: free entry.
- 36 Grüner Hügel, Cäcilienhöhe. Rund um das Festspielhaus befindet sich auf einer Anhöhe im Westviertel der als "Grüner Hügel" bezeichnete Stadtgarten von Recklinghausen. Mit einem alten Baumbestand und seinen zahlreichen Wegen erinnert er ein wenig an die englische Landschaftsgärtnerei. Besonders in der warmen Jahreszeit ist er Ziel von Familien, Sportlern und Spaziergängern. Neben und im Stadtgarten befinden sich der Tierpark, die Sternwarte sowie mehrere Tennis- und Sportfelder. - 37 Erlbruchpark, Erlbruch. Als Teil des Rathausensembles 1908 angelegt, sollte er als englischer Landschaftsgarten die städtebauliche Anlage vervollständigen. Heute ist er aufgrund der absoluten Innenstadtlage bei Berufstätigen, die eine ruhige Mittagspause haben möchten, und aufgrund der vielen Spielanlagen, des Ententeichs und der Sportanlagen bei Familien, Kindern und Jugendlichen beliebt. Schräg gegenüber befindet sich mit dem Dr.-Helene-Kuhlmann-Park ein Platz, der als Wochenmarkt genutzt wird. Viehtor.
Weitere Grünanlagen:
- The Hohenhorster Heide ist ein relativ zentral gelegenes großes Waldgebiet, welches von Straßen und Bahntrassen durchkreuzt wird. Dennoch bietet es mit einem ausgedehnten Wegenetz und einem dichten Baumbestand einen Parkcharakter. Besonders eignet sich die Heide für sportliche Menschen, da hier Joggen, Radfahren etc. nahezu unbegrenzt möglich ist und deutlich weniger Fußgänger auf den Wegen unterwegs sind. Hohenhorster Weg

Insgesamt liegt die Mollbeck im ländlichen Stadtteil Speckhorn, der sich vor allem durch ausgedehnte Felder und zahlreiche alte Alleen auszeichnet. In Recklinghausen gibt es verschiedene Angebote zu Stadt- und Kreisrundfahrten:
- Stadtrundfahrt: Bei der Fahrt geht es mit einem (offenen) Doppeldeckerbus durch Recklinghausen, vorbei an den Sehenswürdigkeiten der Stadt. Die zweistündige Fahrt wird jeden zweiten Mittwoch im Monat (April bis Oktober) sowie an mehreren Sonntagen während des Sommers angeboten. Tickets gibt es online oder im RZ-Ticketcenter vor Ort (siehe unten "Klarkommen"). Abfahrtsort ist der Rathausplatz Recklinghausen - Fahrt für Erwachsene/Kinder (bis 16 J.) für 16.- bzw. 8.- €
- Kreisrundfahrt: Auf dieser Fahrt durch Stadt und Kreis Recklinghausen erfahren die Gäste die Highlights der Region, u.a. das Schiffshebewerk Henrichenburg, den Chemiepark Marl oder die Halterner Seen. - Stadtrundfahrt mit ÖPNV (individuell): Wer die Stadt ohne eigenen PKW kennenlernen möchte und dabei außerhalb der Zeiten der organisierten Stadtrundfahrten in Recklinghausen ist, kann sich mit Hilfe des Busnetzes eine eigene Stadtrundfahrt zusammenstellen. Stadtlinienpläne gibt es here. Wer sich selbst keine Route aussuchen möchte kann folgenden Vorschlag wählen:
- I. Nehmen Sie am Hauptbahnhof die Linie 230/232 bis "Esseler Straße", dann umsteigen in die Linie 234 Richtung "Herten Mitte".
- II. Fahren Sie mit der Linie 234 bis "König Ludwig Str." - steigen Sie nun entweder in die Linie "SB 20" nach "Recklinghausen Hbf" um (kürzere Route) oder nehmen Sie die Linie 210 nach "Herten Mitte" bzw. "Gelsenkirchen Buer Rathaus" (längere Route).
- III. Kürzere Route: Steigen Sie an der Endhaltestelle "Hauptbahnhof" aus. Längere Route: Steigen Sie an "Recklinghausen Süd Bahnhof" von der Linie 210 in die Linie 239 in Richtung "RE Hauptbahnhof" um und steigen Sie anschließend an der Endhaltestelle aus.

Eine weitere Möglichkeit zur Erkundung des Stadtzentrums bietet das städtische Leitsystem:
- Rundgang durch die Altstadt (individuell): Entlang eines neuen Fußgängerleitsystems, welches überall in der Altstadt sowie in den angrenzenden Innenstadtbereichen vorzufinden ist, kann man sich auf einem Rundgang durch die Altstadt bewegen. Da die Zone zu großen Teilen autofrei ist, kann man im eigenen Tempo die Stadt erkunden. Die Tour führt u.a. an der Engelsburg, am Markt und an "Gravemanns Hof" vorbei. Der Weg dauert etwa eine bis 1,5 Stunden; Start- und Zielpunkt ist das Rathaus am Kaiserwall. Viehtor
Regular events
- Immer bis zum Palmsonntag findet auf dem Saatbruch die Recklinghäuser Palmkirmes statt, einer der ersten in NRW. Mittwochs ist Familientag.
- Jährliche 12 Ruhrfestspiele im Mai/Juni.
- Im Sommer startet das Gourmetfest Zu Gast in Recklinghausen. Während des Fests präsentieren viele Gastronomen der Region ihre Spezialitäten vor dem vierten Rathaus. Damit verwandelt sich der Rathausplatz in einen riesigen Biergarten mit hoher Aufenthaltsqualität.
- Recklinghausen Leuchtet: Jährlich im Oktober wird in Recklinghausen die Innenstadt für zwei Wochen in allen Farben beleuchtet, begleitet von stündlichen Projektionsvorführungen und Lichtspielen auf dem Rathausplatz. Mittlerweile hat sich die Veranstaltung zu einem echten Highlight der ganzen Region entwickelt, sodass weit mehr als eine Viertelmillion Besucher registriert werden.
- Jedes Jahr im November findet in der Innenstadt die Musiknacht statt, bei der in 15 Kneipen 15 Bands verschiedene Musikrichtungen spielen.
- In jedem Dezember verwandelt sich die Altstadt in einen Christmas Market. Die Auswahl an Essständen ist nicht minder groß als die der Bastel- und Handwerksstände. Mit insgesamt mehr als 80 Hütten auf dem Markt und dem Löhrhof sowie weiteren Hütten im traditionellen Stil mit viel Handwerkskunst auf dem Kirchplatz bedient der Weihnachtsmarkt viele Geschmäcker. Er startet meist am Montag vor dem ersten Adventssonntag und endet an Sylvester. Auf dem Rathausplatz locken Eisbahn und Riesenrad bis Ende Januar Besucher an.

In Recklinghausen gibt es viele Möglichkeiten zum Einkaufen und Shoppen. Am besten eignet sich dafür die Altstadt/Innenstadt mit einer weitverzweigten Fußgängerzone. Hier findet man eigentlich alles, was man von einer kleineren Großstadt erwarten kann. Neben den klassischen großen Einzelhandelsketten gibt es aber auch viele inhabergeführte Geschäfte und Boutiquen. Besonders im "Krim"-Viertel in der nördlichen Altstadt findet man viele davon, einige davon sehr hochwertig. Insgesamt können Einheimische und Besucher in der Altstadt aus über 250 Geschäften wählen.
- 1 Palais Vest, Löhrhof/Kaiserwall. 2014 eröffnetes Einkaufszentrum über drei Etagen. Hier lassen sich hauptsächlich die Filialen großer Ketten wie C&A, Mango, MediaMarkt, Wellensteyn oder Rituals finden. Hingucker ist allein das Center selbst aufgrund seiner außergewöhnlichen Architektur und Aufteilung (Grüner Salon, Orangerie, Vestibül) sowie des Service (Wlan, Rezeption). Viele Parkplätze im und neben dem Center. Viehtor.
- 39 Old town. Im Kontrast zum Palais Vest bietet sich die Altstadt zum Einkaufsbummel an. An erster Stelle sind dabei der market, the Kunibertistraße, the Breite Straße, the Steinstraße and the Große Geldstraße zu nennen. Viehtor / Steintor / Am Lohtor / Reitzensteinstraße / Recklinghausen Hbf.
- 2 Neumarkt. Mittelpunkt der Südstadt mit Einkaufsmöglichkeiten, die typisch für ein Stadtteilzentrum sind. Nichts Außergewöhnliches.
Insgesamt bietet Recklinghausen eine große und (vergleichsweise) hochwertige Vielfalt von großen Waren- und Modehäusern über bekannte Kettenfilialen bis hin zu inhabergeführten Geschäften.

Kulinarisch gesehen bietet Recklinghausen, wie auch sein Umfeld, eine breite Auswahl an Küchen verschiedener Richtungen. Wie im gesamten Ruhrgebiet gibt es auch in Recklinghausen Lokale mit internationaler Küche; meist sind dies die italienische, spanische, griechische, jugoslawische, türkische oder asiatische Küche. Dazu kommt die traditionelle Küche Westfalens, welche zumeist recht einfach, aber reichhaltig und deftig ist. Westfälische Besonderheiten sind beispielsweise der Sauerbraten, Pumpernickel (sehr dunkles Körnerbrot) oder auch Panhas.
Nachfolgend werden ausschließlich "echte" Speiselokale, Restaurants und Cafés gelistet. Weitere Speisemöglichkeiten finden sich in der Orangerie im EKZ "Palais Vest" in der Altstadt, wo sowohl italienische wie asiatische Küche zu finden sind. Aber auch "Klassiker" wie Nordsee besitzen dort eine Filiale. - 1 Rossmetzgerei Hobbold, Brandstraße 11. Weit über die Recklinghäuser Stadtgrenzen hinaus bekannt ist die Traditionsschlachterei Hobbold in der Altstadt. Klassiker und Spezialität des Hauses zugleich sind die Pferdeklopse, aber es gibt auch Aufschnitt, Wurst oder Fleisch. Im Haus kann man sowohl in der Gaststätte essen als auch nebenan Ware für Zuhause mitnehmen. Neben vielen Stammgästen und Recklinghäusern soll hier auch Komiker Hape Kerkeling bei seinen Heimatbesuchen einkehren…

Während manche abwertend von einem "Straßenimbiss" sprechen, ist die "Wurstkultur" für andere mittlerweile eine feste Recklinghäuser Instutition in Sachen Currywurst. Hier gibt es zweifelsohne eine sehr leckere Currywurst, die so typisch für´s Ruhrgebiet mit viel Currypulver serviert wird. Die Schlangen Hungriger sprechen für sich.
- 6 POTT.Curry, Löhrhofstraße. Ein weiterer Tipp für Einheimische und Auswärtige, die gerne mehr als "nur Currywurst" essen wollen. Hier gibt es nämlich neben dem Klassiker auch Hotdogs, Burger etc. - alles zudem auch in einer veganen Variante.

Ausgehen und Nachtleben
Auch wenn natürlich nicht mit einer Universitätsstadt vergleichbar, so ist in Recklinghausen in den letzten Jahren eine durchaus beachtenswerte Bar- und Kneipenszene entstanden, die einen Vergleich mit anderen größeren Städten der Region nicht scheuen muss. So sind vor allem in der Altstadt Cafés, Bars und Kneipen konzentriert, weshalb u.a. die Recklinghäuser Kneipennacht dazu einlädt, von "Haus zu Haus" zu ziehen.Besonders konzentriert sich die Kneipenszene an der Herrenstraße, wo innerhalb von 50 Metern vier Kneipen und Bars zum "Durchmachen" einladen.
