Muenster is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia. The university city and capital of the Münsterland is considered one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in Germany. In no other major German city will you come across as many cyclists as here. In addition to being bike-friendly, Münster also has a lot to offer in terms of leisure and cultural activities, on the one hand the very old town center, which was completely rebuilt after the Second World War, but also the unique local recreational opportunities on and around the Aasee.

Münster was founded at the end of the 8th century by the Frisian missionary St. Ludger as part of the subjugation of the previously pagan Saxons by Charlemagne. The place name means "monastery", which is also reflected in the Latin form Monastery can be read (see English monastery). As early as 805, Münster became a bishopric, and in 1170 it received city rights.
Munster was a Principality, the vast majority of today's Münsterland dominated. This means that the respective bishop was both spiritual and political head as well as supreme court lord. During the Middle Ages, Münster was a member of the Hanseatic League and became a wealthy one Trading city. This can still be clearly seen in the proud merchants' houses on Prinzipalmarkt. In the years 1534/35, Münster became part of the radical Protestant sect of the Anabaptists whose leader, the Dutch preacher Jan van Leiden, was crowned Priest-King of the "Kingdom of Zion", and who expect the end of the world to come soon. This movement was brutally suppressed by the Catholic Church, its leaders were tortured, executed and their corpses exhibited in cages on the highest steeple (the cages can still be seen today at the Lamberti Church).

The city gained world historical importance through the Peace of Westphalia from 1648 the same time in Münster and Osnabrück was negotiated and ended the Thirty Years War. The contract between the emperor and France was signed in the town hall of Munster, and the one with Sweden in Osnabrück. During the trial, messengers from the various parties had to constantly ride back and forth between the two cities. The city is proud of this heritage, is nicknamed the “City of Peace” and awards the Westphalian Peace Prize.
In the middle of the 18th century, the baroque architect Johann Conrad Schlaun worked for Clemens August von Bayern, the then Prince-Bishop of Münster, and his successor Maximilian Friedrich von Königsegg-Rothenfels. Above all, he designed the Prince-Bishop's Palace, but also the Erbdrostenhof, several churches and other baroque buildings in and around Münster.
In 1815 the previously independent prince-bishopric of Münster was attached to Prussia and Münster became the administrative seat of the Prussian province of Westphalia. Since then, the city has been dominated by administrative and judicial authorities, trade and service sectors, while industry only played a subordinate role. For a long time, Münster was therefore considered to be deeply “black”, i. H. Catholic and conservative city, unlike the major cities in the nearby Ruhr areawho were strongholds of the labor movement.
The university Münster was founded in 1773, but closed again under Prussian rule in 1818 in favor of the newly founded university in Bonn. It was then rebuilt in 1902 under Kaiser Wilhelm II Westphalian Wilhelms University it still bears his name to this day (controversially). The number of students has grown significantly since then. The university and the Münster University of Applied Sciences together have over 50,000 students - including many foreign guest students - which gives the city an increasingly liberal and diverse flair that is in contrast to Münster's traditional image.
During the Second World War, 90 percent of the old town was destroyed by air raids. But it was rebuilt almost immediately, so that the old town looks historic.

The "international" airport Münster Osnabrück is located approx. 25 km north of Münster in the urban area of Greven. In terms of size and connections, it is more of a regional airport. There are regular shuttles (lines S50 (express bus), D50 and R51) from the airport to the main train station in Münster. On Sundays there is about one bus an hour, and more on weekdays. Another option is to travel to Dortmund Airport, 55 km to the south. With the shuttle bus to the nearby Holzwickede train station and then the direct regional express, it takes a little over an hour to get to Münster.

is on the important railway line from Hamburg to the Ruhr area. Direct intercity trains stop here every hour from Hamburg (travel time 2:15 hours), Bremen (1:15 hours), Essen (50 minutes), Cologne (1:55 hours) and Mainz (3½ hours); every two hours from Frankfurt a. M. (4:10 hours) and Stuttgart (5:45 hours). There are also IC connections from Emden (1:55 hours) and Emsland (Papenburg: 1:25 hours) every two hours, but on this route the IC is hardly faster than the regional trains.
An ICE from Munich (6½ hours), Stuttgart (4:05 hours) and Frankfurt Airport (2:45 hours) or Vienna (11 hours) and Nuremberg (6½ hours) only stops once a day. .
A cost-effective alternative to traveling from Hamburg or Cologne is the private one Flixtrain. It is just as fast as the IC, but the journey is much cheaper. The train offers up to 6 departures a day.
Coming from Berlin and Hanover, you usually have to go to Hamm change.

From the north: Via the A1 (Hansalinie) from Osnabrück / Bremen. In a north-westerly direction, the B54 (Steinfurter Str.) Leads from Gronau / Enschede (NL) to Münster.

1 St. Paul Cathedral. Today's cathedral is the third cathedral church at this point. The first Carolingian cathedral was built in 805 at the time of Saint Ludger. It was replaced in the 10th or 11th century by a second, Romanesque cathedral, which can still be seen today in the westwork. The third cathedral was built in the middle of the 13th century and has the shape of a Gothic basilica. The cathedral was badly damaged by bombs in World War II, but was then rebuilt true to the original. In 2009–13, the cathedral was renovated again so that the stone, which had darkened in the meantime, is beautifully light again. In the westwork of the cathedral there are, among other things, a baroque high altar, a baptismal font from the 14th century, a modern triptych “Pietà and Resurrection” by Thomas Lange and a figure of St. Barbara can be seen. In the east transept there is a plague cross from the 14th century, an epitaph altar from 1534, the tomb of Prince-Bishop Friedrich Christian von Plettenberg from 1707/08 and a life-size figure of Saint Liborius. The high choir is equipped with a monumental "triumphal cross" from the 13th century. The astronomical clock with glockenspiel, manufactured in 1540–42, is one of the most important monumental clocks in German-speaking countries.
In the ambulatory there is a statue of Saint Anthony from the Baroque period as well as a representation of the Stations of the Cross in the form of 15 bronze groups from the late 20th century and a portrait of Clemens August Cardinal von Galen, who as Bishop of Münster resisted the National Socialists and in particular against the murder of the disabled. His grave is also located in the cathedral, in the Galen's side chapel. The bronze sculpture “The Beggar” by Ernst Barlach is located in the cloister. Immediately behind the cathedral is the cathedral chamber, which stores and exhibits art treasures collected by the bishops. In 2004, a bronze crucifixion group by the artist Bert Gerresheim was placed on its back wall.

It was built from 1375 as a market and community church and is kept in the Westphalian late Gothic style. Particularly noticeable are the three iron cages on the tower in which the bodies of the leaders of the "Anabaptist Empire" of Münster were hung after their execution in 1536. On the west portal there are figures of the four evangelists from 1911, with St.Luke the face of J.W. Goethes and Johannes that Friedrich Schillers received. From 9 p.m. to midnight, a tower keeper blows a horn every half and full hour (except on Tuesdays).
3 Überwasserkirche, Überwasserkirchplatz (between Frauenstrasse and Spiekerhof). The third church, the towers of which significantly shape the cityscape of Münster. It is consecrated to the birth of Mary (hence sometimes also called Liebfrauenkirche), the name "Überwasser" refers to the location on the opposite side of the Aa - seen from the cathedral. A church stood at this point as early as the 11th century. The current construction, a Gothic hall church, began around 1340 and was completed in the 15th century.
4 St. Ludgeri, Ludgeristraße 40. Erected 1180–1220. One of the oldest churches in Münster. The crossing tower is striking, with a Gothic one on top of two Romanesque floors. There are also two west towers.
5 St. Aegidii, Aegidiikirchplatz 4, 48143 Münster. Tel.: 49 (0)251 48 29 47 97. Baroque church built in 1724–28 based on designs by Johann Conrad Schlaun.Open: only during church service times, regularly Sun 9 am–12pm.
6 St. Servatii, Servatiikirchplatz / Klosterstr. Small church building that is used for "eternal adoration". Built around 1230, late Romanesque to early Gothic.
7 Clement Church, At the Clemenskirche. Unusual, hexagonal baroque church. It is one of the most important baroque churches in northwest Germany. The interior impresses with an overloaded, decorative rococo interior with a ceiling fresco, countless marble putti and gold decorations. Particularly striking are the bright blue columns, an allusion to the color of the Wittelsbach family, from whose dynasty the then Prince-Bishop Clemens August I of Bavaria came. There is a pretty little baroque garden behind the church.
8 Dominican Church, Salzstrasse 10. Baroque church built 1708-25, formerly part of the Dominican monastery. In addition to its function as a Catholic university church, it is also often used for exhibitions.
9 Martini Church, Martinistrasse (Corner of Neubückenstrasse, near the theater). Sacred building begun in 1187, only the lowest part of the tower comes from this Romanesque original building. The upper floors of the tower date from 1480, the baroque tower dome was put on in 1760. Since the congregation merger in 2007, it has primarily served as a youth church.
10 Apostle Church. Oldest and largest Protestant church in the city. The three-aisled Gothic hall church was initially the monastery church of the Franciscan Minorites. It has served as a Protestant church since 1822. The interior looks simple and bright.
11 Observant Church, Schlaunstraße 3. Protestant university church and concert venue for the student choirs of the Protestant theological faculty. Originally it was the monastery church of the Franciscan Observants from the 17th century. It was restored in 2015/16, and since then the interior has shone in new splendor.
12 Petrikirche, Jesuit gang (on the banks of the Aa, between the Fürstenberghaus, the English seminar (Johannisstraße) and the law faculty of the university). The former Jesuit church, built between 1590–97, is part of the transition between Gothic and Renaissance. Today it serves as the church of the Catholic Student and University Community of Münster (KSHG), for concerts (good acoustics) and weddings.Open: Mon-Thu 9 am-3:30pm; Fri 9 a.m. - 12.30 p.m.
13 St. Mauritz Church, Sankt-Mauritz-Freiheit 22 (Bus 33/34 St. Francis Hospital or 2, 10 Hohenzollernring / Finance Court). Former collegiate church from the 11th century, is the oldest sacred building in Münster, with parts of it originally preserved.
14 St. Joseph, Sankt-Josefs-Kirchplatz (Hammer road; Bus 1, 9 St. Joseph Church). Neo-Gothic parish church from 1888 in the southern quarter.
15 Sacred Heart Church, Wolbecker Strasse 125 (Bus 11 Hansa vocational college). Neo-Gothic parish church in the quarter of the same name, built 1895–1900. At almost 95 meters, it has the highest church tower in the city.

16 Holy Cross Church, Hoyastrasse 22 (Bus 15, 16 Hoyastrasse). Parish church of the Kreuzviertel, named after her, which connects to the city center to the north. Built 1899–1902 as a neo-Gothic basilica with a cross-shaped floor plan and an 87-meter-high tower. On this is the lettering “Yes, I'm there”, which is illuminated in the evening and at night, with one word pointing in one of the four cardinal directions.
17 Holy Spirit Church, Metzer Strasse 37-41 (Bus 4 Holy Spirit Church). Brick church in the style of New Objectivity or New Building from the 1920s; Parish church of the Geistviertel.
18 Erpho Church (actually Christ the King Church), Ostmarkstrasse 21 (Erphokirchplatz; Bus 4 Erpho Church). Parish church built 1928-30 with neo-Romanesque style elements. Your name carried over to the surrounding Erphoviertel.
19 Dyckburg Church, Dyckburgstrasse 220 (approx. 5 km northeast of the city center). Small baroque church on the northeastern outskirts. It was built in 1740 according to a design by Johann Conrad Schlaun as a chapel of the manor on the site of the former Dyckburg. The model was the pilgrimage church in Loreto, hence the nickname Loreto chapel. At the end of the 19th century it was expanded to include a round building as a church space and a neo-baroque choir area. Concerts, mainly with baroque music, take place here regularly (Dyckburg concerts).
Castles, chateaux and palaces

This is located near the city center, right on the promenade 20 Prince-Bishop's Castle. It was designed by Johann Conrad Schlaun and completed in 1787 as one of the last high baroque buildings in Germany (at this time rococo or even classicism was already in fashion). However, Prince-Bishop Maximilian Friedrich, who had commissioned the castle, was never able to move in because he had died earlier. A few years later, Münster lost its status as a prince-bishopric and the palace was used for other purposes.
Nowadays it serves as the main building of the university with the rectorate and ballroom. It was badly damaged in the Second World War, but was subsequently rebuilt true to the original (at least externally). The interior, on the other hand, reflects more the preferences of the 1950s. The facade is an unusual combination of sandstone and brick. During the opening hours of the university administration you can also look inside, but there is nothing special to visit here. Events are often held on the palace square, especially in summer (broadcast, horse show, summer cinema), which somewhat restricts the view of the palace.
Behind the castle is the extensive one Castle garden, surrounded by a pentagonal moat. One part is designed as a landscape garden, but one part also serves as a 21 Botanical Garden of the university (free entry).

The lock also falls under the category 22 Erbdrostenhofat Salzstraße 38. The baroque aristocratic palace was also designed by Johann Conrad Schlaun and built in 1753–57 for the Münster hereditary coroner Adolf Heidenreich Droste zu Vischering. The Erbdrosten were high administrative officials in the prince-bishopric of Münster, to a certain extent the prince-bishop's deputy (the ancestral seat of the Drosten zu Vischering can be found in Ludinghausen can be visited and is also very worth seeing). In the historic, Gothic town hall with its lavishly decorated gable, the Peace of Westphalia was concluded in 1648, which together with the Peace of Osnabrück ended the Thirty Years War. You can get into the lobby free of charge, for a short period in the actual hall you pay a small fee, which includes an information sheet. Last but not least, Dutch tourists visit the town hall, as the Peace of Westphalia is also of great importance for their country. A sign on the ceiling reads: Auditur et altera pars, d. H. “You can hear the other side too”. The hall can be quite full in high season, but it's worth it.
Immediately next to the historic town hall is also worth seeing City wine house in the Renaissance style from 1615/16 - also with a decorative ornate gable. Town hall and Stadtweinhaus are connected by a passage on the first floor that spans the narrow alley between the two. As the name suggests, it was originally used as a warehouse for the town's wine. Today city council meetings and other events take place in the great hall. Every year the Lord Mayor welcomes the Rose Monday parade from the balcony of the Stadtweinhaus.
A few meters south of the town hall is the 24 Townhouse tower. The neo-renaissance building was part of the town house built in 1902-07. This was destroyed in the Second World War and not rebuilt, but the tower survived the war almost undamaged. Its carillon sounds every day at 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.
25 Krameramtshaus (House of the Netherlands), Alter Steinweg 6/7 (Corner of Lambertikirchplatz). The renaissance building, built in 1589, originally served as a meeting place and warehouse for the Kramergilde. The Dutch embassy was housed here during the negotiations for the Peace of Westphalia. In 1995 the university took this as an opportunity to set up the House of the Netherlands in the Krameramtshaus, an institute for the culture, history and society of the neighboring country and Flanders. Events and exhibitions take place here on a regular basis.
26 Kennel, promenade (between Lotharingerstr., Gartenstr. and Neubrückentor, behind the Adolph Kolping Vocational College). Former part of the city fortifications with an eventful history, today a memorial and work of art.Open: Visits: June – September every Sunday 2–6pm; Guided tours: April – October, 1st Sunday of the month 11 am and 3rd Thursday of the month 8 pm.Price: visit 1.50 €, guided tour 3 €; reduced € 1 or € 2.
On the site of a medieval gate tower, the Zwinger was built in the 1520s to 30s as a bulwark and defense tower on the northeast corner of the city fortifications. After the city wall had been razed, it was converted into a penitentiary in 1732/33 and used until the end of the 19th century. After a period of vacancy, the Zwinger served the artist Friedrich Wilhelm Liel as an apartment and painter's studio from 1919–35. Afterwards it was the culture home of the Hitler Youth until 1943. In the last two years of the war, the Gestapo used the building as a prison for forced laborers, dozens of whom were killed on site (the executions had to be carried out by other forced laborers), and many more were transported to concentration camps. This was unknown to the Münster public for a long time. A memorial plaque has only been in place since 1985. On the occasion of the “Sculpture Projects” in 1987, the artist Rebecca Horn installed her work in the Zwinger The opposite concert, which at the same time impressively reminds of the history of the place.
27 Buddenturm, Münzstrasse 20. The oldest surviving part of the former city fortifications of Münster, built around 1150 as a defense tower, from 1598 it served as a powder tower. Can only be viewed from the outside.
28 Gatehouses at the Neutor After the medieval city fortifications had been razed, baroque style gatehouses were built around the then city in the 1770s, the architect was Johann Conrad Schlaun. They served as guard houses from which access to the city was controlled. Guard troops were quartered here until 1918. Except at the Neutor, a corresponding gate house only exists today at 29 Mauritztor, on the east side of the promenade.
The 30 Kreuzviertel (north of the promenade ring) is, at least for those interested in architecture, in its entirety a sight. It is the best-preserved Wilhelminian-style district in the city (although around 50% of this was also destroyed in the war and many gaps were filled with post-war buildings). Particularly beautiful examples can be found along the Finkenstrasse, Raesfeldstrasse and Heerdestrasse. Not only the old houses, but also a large number of small shops and pubs contribute to the special atmosphere in the district and make it one of the most popular residential areas in the city.
31 "White giant", On Mount Fidel 62–66 (Bus 5 Berg Fidel sports hall). 17-storey apartment block from the 1970s with 113 residential units. When it was created, it was considered very modern and classy, today it is more of a social hotspot.
32 Telecommunications tower, Wolbecker Strasse (between house no. 240 and 268; Bus 11 St. Margaretha Church). With a height of 229.5 meters, the tower is by far the tallest structure in Münster and a landmark that can be seen from afar. It was built in 1985/86 and is used to broadcast television and radio stations.
33 LVM headquarters, Kolde-Ring 21 / Von-Stauffenberg-Straße (Corner of Weseler Strasse; Bus 7, 15, 16, 34 Kolde ring). The Agricultural Insurance Association Münster (LVM) is the company with the highest number of employees and the largest turnover and is based in Münster. Seit den 1990er-Jahren ist der bis dahin nur regional bedeutende Versicherer sehr stark gewachsen und so wurde 1999 ein 18-geschossiger Büroturm errichtet; im Jahr 2013 folgte ein fast ebenso hoher zweiter Turm, dessen Form an einen Kristall erinnern soll, direkt daneben. Am Fuße der Türme sind die Skulpturen „Zwei Pferde für Münster“ von Stephan Huber (nachts farbig erleuchtet) und „Körper und Seele“ von Duk-Kyu Ryang zu sehen.
34 Haus Rüschhaus, OT Nienberge, Am Rüschhaus 81 (200 m abseits des Rüschhauswegs; ca. 7 km nordwestlich der Innenstadt; Buslinie 5 Haltestelle Haus Rüschhaus, Fahrtzeit von der Innenstadt ca. 20 min). Tel.: (0)2534-1052. Barockes Landhaus, erbaut 1745–48 vom Architekten Johann Conrad Schlaun zur Selbstnutzung. Die Anlage kombiniert Elemente eines traditionellen westfälischen Bauernhofs mit solchen eines noblen französischen Landsitzes. Ab 1825 war das Rüschhaus im Besitz der Drosten zu Hülshoff. Die Dichterin Annette von Droste-Hülshoff lebte hier mit ihrer Mutter und Schwester von 1826 bis 1846 und verfasste in der Zeit mehrere ihrer wichtigsten Werke. Hinter dem Haus befindet sich ein schöner Barockgarten mit geometrisch angelegten Buchsbaumhecken und zahlreichen dekorativen Skulpturen.
Monuments
35 Kiepenkerl, Spiekerhof/Bergstraße. Die 1,75 m große Statue eines Kiepenkerls, d. H. eines umherziehenden Händlers, der seine Waren in einem Korb auf dem Rücken trägt, ist eines der Wahrzeichen der Stadt. Sie wurde aus Baumberger Sandstein gehauen und 1896 eingeweiht. Beim Einmarsch der US Army wurde sie mit einem Panzer zerstört (die Nazis hatten den Kiepenkerl zuvor zum Symbol eines Propagandaplakats zum Durchhalten gemacht), anschließend aber aus Eisenguss wiedererrichtet. Am Platz mit dem Kiepenkerl befinden sich zwei traditionsreiche Gaststätten: der „Große“ und der „Kleine Kiepenkerl“.

Alle zehn Jahre (Jahreszahlen, die auf ‚7‘ enden) ist Münster Veranstaltungsort der Skulptur Projekte. Bei dieser Ausstellung, die in Kunstkreisen internationale Beachtung findet, werden im ganzen Stadtgebiet verteilt Skulpturen und Plastiken von Künstlern aus dem In- und Ausland aufgestellt. Die meisten verschwinden am Ende der Saison wieder, einen Teil der Werke übernimmt die Stadt jedoch dauerhaft. Folglich gibt es in Münster außergewöhnlich viel Kunst im öffentlichen Raum zu besehen. Zu den bekanntesten und auffälligsten Werken gehören die 36 Giant Pool Balls (drei überdimensionale „Billardkugeln“) von Claes Oldenburg am Aasee (1977), die 37 Kirschensäule von Thomas Schütte in der Windthorststraße (1987) sowie die 38 Square Depression von Bruce Nauman auf dem Naturwissenschafts-Campus der Uni (vor dem Institut für Kernphysik, Wilhelm-Klemm-Straße 9; 2007).
39 Paul-Wulf-Skulptur („Münsters Geschichte von unten“), Salzstraße 30 (an der Promenade, Höhe Servatiplatz). Die im Rahmen der Skulptur Projekte 2007 geschaffene Plastik von Silke Wagner trägt die Züge des Bundesverdienstkreuz-Trägers Paul Wulf (1921–1999). Dieser galt in der NS-Zeit als „schwachsinnig“ und wurde zwangssterilisiert, leistete aber durch konspirative Kontakte, Informationsweitergabe und Sabotageakte Widerstand gegen den Nationalsozialismus. Nach 1945 betrieb er unermüdliche Recherchen zur Aufklärung der Nazi-Verbrechen und organisierte antifaschistische Ausstellungen, wobei er auch Münsteraner Mediziner belastete, die nach Kriegsende unbehelligt weiter tätig waren. Der Körper der Figur ist mit Plakaten zu den Themen Erinnerung an NS-Verbrechen, Antifaschismus, Pazifismus und radikale Gesellschaftskritik in Münster beklebt.

Streets and squares
47 Prinzipalmarkt. Die „gute Stube“ Münsters mit dem historischen Rathaus und der Lambertikirche. Mit ihren Arkaden und Renaissancegiebeln (keiner gleicht dem anderen) ist er eines der Wahrzeichen Münsters mit dem größten Wiedererkennungswert (im Münster-„Tatort“ oder „Wilsberg“ ist in der Regel mindestens einmal pro Folge der Prinzipalmarkt zu sehen). Hier reiht sich ein hochpreisiges Mode- oder Accessoire-Geschäft an das andere, man kann aber auch einfach so unter den Arkaden entlangbummeln oder im Sommer in den Straßencafés sitzen. Der Prinzipalmarkt ist zwar verkehrsberuhigt, aber keine Fußgängerzone (Touristen übersehen das oft und verärgern damit Bus-, Taxi- und Radfahrer). Folgt man dem Prinzipalmarkt vorbei an der Lambertikirche, trifft man auf den Drubbel and the Roggenmarkt. Das Straßenbild mit Giebeln und Arkaden ist hier praktisch das gleiche, nur die Bezeichnung ist eine andere. Die Straße führt leicht bergab, vorbei an einem Eiscafé zum „Kiepenkerl“-Denkmal.
48 Cathedral Square. Im Herzen der Stadt findet hier mittwochs und samstags an beiden Tagen von 7 Uhr bis 14.30 Uhr, vor der Kulisse des St.-Paulus-Domes, der Markt von Münster statt. Auch sonst ist der Domplatz ein beliebter Treffpunkt der Münsteraner, zum „Sehen und Gesehenwerden“ und zum entspannten Sitzen in den beiden Straßencafés auf der Südseite des Platzes.
The 49 Palace Square ist ein weitläufiger Platz vor dem Schloss. Bis 2012 hieß er Hindenburgplatz, um die Umbenennung gab es eine intensive politische Debatte. Auf dem Platz selbst findet dreimal im Jahr das Volksfest Send statt, außerdem ein jährliches Reitturnier, Volleyballturnier, Zieleinfahrt des Münsterland-Giros, Sommerkino usw. Ein Teil des Platzes ist Parkplatz (einer der größten an der Innenstadt), auf der dem Schloss gegenüberliegenden Seite befinden sich Gebäude der Universität, ein paar Restaurants, Cafés und Läden.
The 50 Ludgeriplatz (oder „Ludgerikreisel“) befindet sich unmittelbar südlich der Altstadt und ist als Kreisverkehr mit (nicht zugänglicher) Grünfläche in der Mitte gestaltet. Auf dem Platz befinden sich die beiden Bronzestatuen Knecht mit Pferd and Magd mit Stier von Carl Hans Bernewitz. Zudem lebt auf der Mitte des Kreisels eine Kolonie verwilderter Kaninchen.
The 51 Gasselstiege ist eine der ältesten Straßen Münsters. Sie verläuft vom Nordwestrand des Stadtzentrums (Steinfurter Straße) auf einer Länge von über 6 Kilometern zum ehemaligen Hof Schulze Gassel im Norden von Münster. Sie führt größtenteils durch die Grünanlagen und Felder der fast schon ländlich geprägten Außenbezirke Münsters rund um den Stadtteil Kinderhaus. Einst war sie die erste Etappe der wichtigen Handelsroute zwischen Münster und den Niederlanden, heute ist sie größtenteils nur noch Fuß- und Radweg. Man kann von ihr aus einige sehr schöne Spaziergänge in der Umgebung machen, zum Beispiel in Richtung Vorbergshügel und Nienberge.
Durch die Innenstadt zieht sich ein 1,5 km langer, hübsch begrünter 52 Spazierweg an der Aa. Er verbindet den südwestlichen Abschnitt der Promenade (Am Stadtgraben, Nähe Aasee) mit dem nordöstlichen (Zwinger), wobei er den Bispinghof, Spiegelturm, Spiekerhof, Bergstraße und Breul kreuzt. Er ist nur für Fußgänger (also auch nicht für die sonst omnipräsenten Radfahrer) zugänglich. Nach Norden hin setzt sich der Fußweg entlang der Aa weitere 2,5 km Richtung Zentrum-Nord/Nevinghoff/Nienburgpark fort, nach Süden schließt sich die beliebte Spazier- und Joggingstrecke rund um den Aasee an.
Parks
53 Aasee Um den 1914–34 angelegten künstlichen See herum erstreckt sich eine der größten und beliebtesten öffentlichen Grünflächen der Münsteraner. Der Park am Aasee ist die „Grüne Lunge“ Münsters. Viel genutzt wird der Kiesweg um den See von unzähligen Joggern und Flaneuren. Im Sommer werden die Wiesen zum größten Grillplatz der Stadt. Auf dem Aasee selbst kann man segeln, Tretboot oder Solarboot fahren, jedoch nicht schwimmen. Auch das Eislaufverbot sollte man unbedingt ernstnehmen, da der Stausee Strömung hat und selbst im kältesten Winter nur ganz oberflächlich zufriert.
Auf der Route der ehemaligen Stadtmauern verläuft die promenade, eine knapp 4 km lange, grüne Allee, die vor allem von Fahrradfahrern genutzt wird. Im Sommer sieht man hier sowohl Sonnenanbeter als auch Jogger und immer Spaziergänger jeder Altersschicht.
54 Südpark. Zentral im Südviertel in der Nähe der Josefskirche an der Hammer Straße gelegen (Bus 1 oder 9 bis „St. Joseph-Kirche“), ist der Südpark ein beliebtes Ziel von Joggern, Familien, Hundebesitzern und Obdachlosen. Auch das ein oder andere SPD-Stadtteilfest mit Doppelkopfturnier findet dort statt.
55 Wienburgpark. Was der Südpark für das Südviertel, ist für die nördlicheren Stadtteile den Wienburgpark (zwischen Kanal- und Wienburgstraße, Bus 17 „Wienburgstr.“). Größer als jener, bietet er Platz für Grillpartys, aber auch für Freunde exotischer Sportarten wie Jugger. Natürlich durchläuft auch diesen Park eine Joggingroute, und natürlich gibt es auch genügend freie Fläche zum Fußball-, Badminton-, Völkerballspiel etc. Im Sommer finden hier die Münsteraner Ferienspiele statt. In dieser Zeit ist nur ein Teil des Parkes nutzbar, wenn man kein Kind mehr ist.
56 Hörsterfriedhof (östlich der Promendade, zwischen Bohlweg und Piusallee). Es handelt sich dabei nicht eigentlich um einen Park, sondern um einen aufgegebenen Friedhof, dessen vereinzelt stehenden alten und malerischen Grabsteine man an einem schönen Tag umwandern kann. Man kann aber auch seine Decke für ein Picknick auf der Rasenfläche ausbreiten, wenn die städtischen Gärtner diese nicht gerade mit einem Mähertraktor kürzen.
57 Park Sentmaring (zwischen Weseler Straße und Sentmaringer Weg; Bus 7, 15, 16 WL Bank / IHK). Ehemaliger Klostergarten, heute schöner Stadtteilpark im Geistviertel. Auf dem Gelände befindet sich ein kleiner Friedhof des Jesuitenordens, auf dem u. a. Pater Johannes Leppich (1915–1992), in den Fünfzigerjahren prominenter Wanderprediger und Mitbegründer der Telefonseelsorge, bestattet ist. Besonders schön ist es hier im Frühjahr und Frühsommer, wenn die Narzissen, Glockenblumen und Kirschbäume blühen, aber auch im Herbst mit der Laubfärbung.

The 59 Rieselfelder sind ein Naturschutzgebiet am nördlichen Stadtrand, nördlich des Stadtteils Coerde, zwischen den eingemeindeten Dörfern Sprakel und Gelmer (rund 10 km nördlich der Innenstadt; ca. 2 km vom Bahnhof Sprakel; erreichbar mit Buslinie 4, Haltestelle Rieselfelder). Sie dienten einst zur Verrieselung, d. H. Beseitigung, der städtischen Abwässer. Heute sind sie vor allem Rast- und Brutgebiet für zahlreiche Vogelarten. Mit dem Fahrrad erreicht man die Rieselfelder von der Innenstadt aus in einer halben bis dreiviertel Stunde.
Im Naturschutzgebiet 60 Wolbecker Tiergarten (südöstlich des Stadtteils Wolbeck, ca. 11 km außerhalb der Innenstadt) wird die Erlenbachaue wieder vollkommen sich selbst überlassen und soll so zu einem „Urwald“ renaturieren. Sie bietet zahlreichen heimischen Arten (darunter Amphibien, Singvögel, Fledermäuse und Rehe) einen Lebensraum.

Radfahren ist selbstverständlich eine der beliebtesten Freizeitsportarten. Es gibt zahlreiche ausgeschilderte Radwege in der und rund um die Stadt. Ohne das Stadtgebiet verlassen zu müssen, erreicht man auch ganz schnell ländlich geprägte und naturnahe Gebiete, z. B. entlang der Werse im Osten Münsters, der Gasselstiege im Nordwesten oder auf den Rieselfeldern im Norden.

Hochklassigen Sport gibt es in Münster vor allem im Volleyball to see. Die Damen des USC Münster sind mehrfache Deutsche Meister, und spielen in der 12 Halle am Berg Fidel auch regelmäßig gegen internationale Gegner.
Derzeit in der 3. Soccer-Bundesliga spielt der Traditionsverein SC Preußen Münster. Unweit von der Halle am Berg Fidel steht das altehrwürdige 13 Preußenstadion, südlich der Innenstadt an der Hammer Straße 304 (Buslinie 1, 5 oder 9 bis Haltestelle Preußenstadion).
Sportlich geht es weiter, denn das „Turnier der Sieger“ ist ein hochklassig besetztes internationales Reitturnier, das jedes Jahr im August oder September viele Pferdefreunde nach Münster lockt. Vor dem Schloss findet das Springreiten statt. Die Dressurprüfungen kann man an der Promenade, in der Nähe des Aasees auf der Westerholt'schen Wiese bewundern.
Volksfeste
Dreimal im Jahr findet auf dem Münsteraner Schlossplatz der Send statt, ein großes Volksfest, das seine Wurzeln in den Synoden des Bistums Münster im Mittelalter hat. Im Frühjahr (oft 3. Aprilwoche), Sommer (oft 3. Juniwoche) und im Herbst (oft 3. Oktoberwoche) zieht der Send von Donnerstag bis Montag (teilweise länger) mit seinen Fressbuden und Fahrgeschäften Besucher aus dem weiteren Umland Münsters an.
In November geht er schon los: Der Christmas Market in Münster. Bis kurz vor Weihnachten breiten sich auf allen Plätzen in der Stadt Stände aus. Von Glühwein über Handarbeiten bis hin zu Currywurst und Schinkenbrötchen kann man sich hier in festliche Stimmung bringen oder die vom Einkaufsbummel kalten Hände wärmen.

Die Haupteinkaufsstraße ist der 1 Prinzipalmarkt (sowie die Rothenburg, der Drubbel und Roggenmarkt, in die er fließend übergeht) in der Altstadt und dessen umliegende Straßen. Besonders am Prinzipalmarkt findet man vor allem hochpreisige Boutiquen für Markenkleidung und -accessoirs. Renommierte Namen sind hier Modehaus Petzhold (Prinzipalmarkt 5), Oeding-Erdel (Juwelier, Prinzipalmarkt 29), Schuhhaus Zumnorde (Prinzipalmarkt 34), Harenberg (Lederwaren, Prinzipalmarkt 37), Modehaus Schnitzler (Prinzipalmarkt 40 und 43), Kösters Wohnkultur (Prinzipalmarkt 45–46), Mocca-Haus (Kaffee und Tee, Rothenburg 53), Lui (ital. Auf den Roggenmarkt folgt die Bogenstraße – vorbei am Kiepenkerl – der 2 Spiekerhof, die Rosen- und die Überwasserstraße (die unterschiedlichen Namen haben historische Gründe, auf den Besucher wirkt es aber wie a Straßenverlauf). Hier findet man u. a. Geschäfte für Feinkost (Butterhandlung Holstein, Bogenstraße 9), hochwertige Antiquitäten (Kunsthandel Peter R. Ein Geschäft, das zugleich eine Sehenswürdigkeit darstellt, ist das 3 Antiquariat Michael Solder (Frauenstraße 49, gegenüber der Überwasserkirche), das vielen Fernsehzuschauern als der Laden des Privatdetektivs Wilsberg aus der gleichnmaigen ZDF-Serie bekannt ist.
The 4 Ludgeristraße ist eine der beliebtesten Einkaufs- und Flaniermeilen der Stadt. Vor allem samstags drängen sich hier die Shoppingbummler aus Münster und Umgebung. Allerdings findet man hier vor allem Repräsentanzen der überall gleichen Ketten (H&M, C&A, Zara, Mango usw.) und nur wenige individuelle Geschäfte.
With the 5 Münster-Arkaden (Ludgeristraße 100 oder Rothenburg) besitzt die Stadt auch ein überdachtes Einkaufszentrum mit Gastronomiebetrieben und Einzelhandelsgeschäften. Es grenzt an die Rückseite des Picasso-Museums.
The 6 Salzstraße Hier findet man etwa den Briefmarken- und Münzhändler Otto Hindrichs (Salzstr. 1), die große dreietagige Buchhandlung Poertgen-Herder (Salzstr. 56), Karstadt (Salzstr. 47–50), Drogeriemärkte, Mode-, Schuh-, Accessoir- und Einrichtungsläden.
Abseits der großen Fußgängerzonen kann man schöne, kleine Ladenlokale mit besonderem Charme entdecken. Zu erwähnen sind hier die 7 Marmeladenmanufaktur (Blücherstraße 16) und der 8 Weltladen im Südviertel (Hammer Straße 53).
Markets
Großer Beliebtheit erfreut sich der jeden Mittwoch und Sonnabend von 7 bis 14.30 Uhr abgehaltene Weekly market auf dem Domplatz. Zahlreiche Stände bieten frische Blumen, Obst und Gemüse, Käse, Wurst und Delikatessen; aber auch essfertige Gerichte wie Backfisch, Kartoffelsuppe oder Reibeplätzchen (anderswo bekannt als Kartoffelpuffer) an. Es herrscht eine geschäftige, aber doch entspannte Stimmung. Die Preise liegen meist deutlich über Supermarktniveau, wenn man kurz vor Schluss kommt, kann man aber oft Schnäppchen abgreifen. Eine besondere Empfehlung ist der Stand Die Käsetüte, an dem man gemischte Tüten mit verschiedenen Käsesorten bekommt.
Am jeweils dritten Samstag im Mai, Juli, August und September findet auf dem westlichen Abschnitt der Promenade (von Aasee bis Schlossplatz) der beeindruckende 9 Trödel- und Antikmarkt statt, der seinesgleichen sucht. Besonders auf dem Gelände des ehemaligen Zoos (zwischen Himmelreichallee und Badestraße) kann man Studenten und Familien beim Versilbern von Speicher- und Kellerinhalten beobachten und das ein oder andere Schnäppchen machen.

In addition to coffee specialties, there is organic lemonade and craft beer. When the weather is nice, you can sit outside in the small, car-free alley (if you can get a seat). Right next door is the one belonging to the same operator FF Café.Open: Daily from 10 a.m.
29 Rick’s Café, Aegidiistraße 56. Tel.: (0)251-4882336. A popular café, especially with local schoolchildren and students (but also "older semesters"). For breakfast there are hot beverages and sandwiches from Monday to Friday, and an extensive buffet on weekends. In the afternoon there is usually one or two types of cake, as well as warm snacks and bistro dishes (the high-quality and delicious burgers are especially famous). There is an idyllic and cozy beer garden behind the house. I recommend the iced coffee, which is made from espresso, milk, a little sugar (if you wish) and ice cubes (also vanilla ice cream if you wish). 30 Roastable, Nordstrasse 2 (Kreuzviertel, north of the promenade; Bus 15, 16 "Kreuzschanze" or "Hoyastr."). Coffee roastery that produces the best coffee in town according to the tastes of many Münster residents. Several cafés in Münster advertise that they serve Roestbar coffee, but the roastery now also operates five "coffee houses" (which has expanded significantly since the 2000s): In addition to the parent company in the Kreuzviertel and the "Roestbar zwo" at the theater, there are locations at Bohlweg 68a (Erphoviertel), in Domgasse (small passage from Prinzipalmarkt to Domplatz) and at Rothenburg 17. The second location of the Roestbar is in a picturesque historic building from the 18th century on a small square, where you can sit outside in good weather. Especially on Saturday afternoons, there may be a long line at the counter (self-service).Open: Mon-Fri 9 am–7pm, Sat 9 am–6pm, Sun 10 am–6pm.
To see and be seen (especially on Saturdays when the big weekly market takes place on Domplatz), the Marktcafé or the Floyd are ideal.
nightlife
Münster has many bars. The classic pub district is certainly that Cow quarter in the north-western part of the old town, especially Kreuzstrasse and Jüdefelderstrasse, in which one original pub follows the next. The street is often overcrowded with partying students, especially on Wednesdays and weekend nights. Over the whole Downtown There are other interesting pubs and clubs scattered around. They are a little further apart, but the distances are never long in Münster. Around the port A somewhat more chic nightlife district has developed over the past few years. Friends of alternative music are sure to find the former industrial area Hawerkamp appreciate.
The local newsreel gives an overview of upcoming events well thenwhich is also available free of charge at distribution points throughout the city.

3 The blue house, Kreuzstrasse 16-17. Similar to the Cavete, a winding student bar on several levels. The menu features simple Westphalian dishes. In the 1970s, the bright blue painted, historic house was a hippie hangout, but today you can meet a cross-section of the (student-academic) society here.Open: daily 12 noon – approx. 1 a.m., Fri-Sat until approx. 3 a.m.Price: Beer 0.5l € 4.30, long drinks € 4.90 - € 7.50; Plate of green noodles from € 8.90.
4 Still (short "Dille"), Kuhstrasse 10 (Corner of Jüdefelderstr.). Once a jazz club (in which Götz Alsmann, among others, had his first appearances), today a somewhat rancid cross between pub and club, in which 20-year-olds dance to hits and oldies on the tables. For some absolute cult, others turn up their noses. Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays between 11pm and 1.30am jam-packed and hot, then you can practically cut the air. On other days moderately visited and much more civilized.Open: Daily 8pm - 1.30pm.
5 Gorilla bar, Jüdefelderstrasse 54. Quaint, student-style pub. On certain dates there are live rock concerts or karaoke, as well as the Bundesliga soccer league on Saturdays.

9 Enchilada, Doktorkarrengasse 12 (between Winkelstr. and Alter Steinweg, near the west end of the pedestrian zone.). Good cocktails and Mexican tasting.
10 Lieschen Müller, Mauritzstrasse 24. Tel.: (0)251-39630736. Downtown branch of the “Bohème Boulette”, furnished with home-made furniture made of untreated wood and vintage decorations (old movie posters, tube radios, etc.). There is Bavarian draft beer, a small selection of cocktails and bar snacks, especially fresh burgers (also veggie or vegan). There are board games and ping-pong to pass the time, crime scene is watched here on Sunday evenings, there is a pub quiz or similar on other dates.Open: Daily from 6 p.m.Price: burger (without side dish) € 3.10–4.40.
11 Black sheep, Old fish market 25–26. The only nightclub in the immediate city center. Mainly charts, sometimes live music too. It only gets full on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from midnight, when there is sometimes a line in front of the entrance.
Harbor / Hansaring
After partying in the Hafen / Hansaring area, you can take the N85 night bus (stops Hansaring, Stadtwerke / Hafen or Hall Münsterland) come back to your accommodation (if necessary, change at the main train station, there is guaranteed connection to all other night bus routes).
12 Bohème Boulette, Hansaring 26 (between Soester and Dortmunder Str.). Cozy, student-style pub in the style of an old living room with discarded armchairs and sofas. Foosball table; Tatort on Sundays, pub quizzes or double-headed tournaments on other dates. 14 Nomad, Hansaring 37 (next to Fok Food, corner of Dortmunder Str.). Chic, hip cocktail bar; z. Some of them have their own cocktail creations that you can't get anywhere else. There are also craft beers and a small selection of wines.Price: cocktails € 6–8.
15 Plan B, Hansaring 9 (Corner of Soester Str.). Cozy, relaxed pub; cheap prices. Sometimes you sit on beanbags, table football and board games are available. 16 Red Lola, Albersloher Weg 12 (Hafenplatz, next to the Cineplex). Dance club and lounge in the style of a large flat share with second-hand furniture, table football and video game console. Crossing port / Hawerkamp
The discos Jovel and Amp do not belong to the actual Hawerkamp site, but are located about halfway between the harbor and Hawerkamp, across from the Münsterland hall.
18 Amp, At Hawerkamp 1. Creatively furnished dance club with two small floors, changing music styles. Visited mainly on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays between midnight and 4 a.m.Open: Wed-Sat 11 pm-5pm.
19 Jovel, Albersloher Weg 54. Quite a large music club and disco (by Münster standards), mostly mainstream music, some live concerts.
Hawerkamp
The Hawerkamp, more precisely Am Hawerkamp 31, is a former industrial site (concrete works Peter Büscher & Sohn - Pebüso) not far from the port, which was converted into an alternative cultural area with music clubs, but also studios, rehearsal stages and studios in the 1990s. The rock festival takes place here every year Vainstream, the one focused on electronic dance music Docklands Festival as well as the open-air cinema in summer Flicker instead of. The closest (night) bus stop is Hall Münsterland (N85), from there it's a good 500 meter walk to Hawerkamp.

21 Heaven Beachhouse, At Hawerkamp 29a. Until 2017 Heaven was Münster's largest discotheque, located on the harbor. Now it has moved to City Harbor 2 on the edge of the Hawerkamp site. Initially, a smaller temporary solution is being offered there under the name Heaven Beachhouse. The actual Heaven is scheduled to reopen in early 2020. The club is usually only open on Friday and Saturday nights (fills up from around midnight). Mostly (very) young audience. Münster is a student city. 60,000 students attend the university and other colleges in the city of 310,000. The Westphalian Wilhelms University is one of the largest universities in Germany with more than 40,000 students. The institutes and facilities of the university are scattered all over Münster, the central administration is in the castle. The Münster University of Applied Sciences is just outside in the north of the city.

The downside of the good cycling infrastructure is that many cyclists are very self-confident, some even ride aggressively. Under no circumstances should you as a pedestrian commit the faux pas of walking or standing on a bike path, otherwise you will be impatiently rung out of the way. When crossing streets, you not only have to make sure that the actual road is clear, but also that there is no bike coming. You should be particularly careful when getting on and off the bus. Many cyclists simply drive past the bus that is stopping, so that a collision with the bus passengers can often only almost be averted.

Practical advice
Most of the people of Münster speak high German without dialect. Sometimes there are some words from the Masematte, a local sociolect that originated in the slums of Munster in the 19th century, became part of the city's general parlance. Some examples are:

In the area around Münster - dem Münsterland - you can find many castles. There are booklets in various tourist information offices with complete bike tours to the castles, including the "100 Castles Route". Because of the flat landscape, the routes are also suitable for less trained cyclists and can be used without great effort.
- To the west
- 61 Hülshoff Castle, Havixbeck, Schonebeck 6 (between Münster-Roxel and Havixbeck, approx. 10 km west of Münster city center, best reached by bike). Romantic, late medieval moated castle. Birthplace of the poet Anette von Droste-Hülshoff. E-bike charging station. The excursion can be easily combined with a visit to Haus Rüschhaus, also to the west of Münster, Droste-Hülshoff's retirement home.
- 62 House stack, Havixbeck, Gennerich 18 (2 km north of the center of Havixbeck, approx. 18 km west of Münster city center, best reached by bike). One of the largest moated castles in Westphalia - classicist main building, baroque outer bailey.
- Billerbeck (26 km to the west, half an hour by train, RB every hour) - The "Pearl of the Baumberge" with the historic city center, Ludgerus Cathedral, St. John's Church and the neo-Romanesque Benedictine Abbey of Gerleve a little further to the west (towards Coesfeld)
- Horstmar (27 km northwest, 35 minutes by bus, line S70 every hour) - Haus Alst (Renaissance-Burgmannshof)
- eastbound
- Telgte (11 km northeast, by bike, or 12 minutes by train, RB every hour) - Pretty, quiet old town. The octagonal baroque Marienkapelle is the most important Catholic pilgrimage destination in northern Germany. Museum for religious culture (crib museum), grain distillery museum; several historical buildings from the Renaissance and Baroque periods; various small shops and restaurants.
- Warendorf (26 km to the east, half an hour by train, RB every hour) - the center of the Münsterland equestrian sport; Romanesque collegiate church St. Bonifatius in the OT Freckenhorst
- To the south

- 63 House Borg, Drensteinfurt OT Rinkerode, Altendorf 51 (2.5 km west of the Rinkerode train station, approx. 14 km south of Münster city center). Moated castle (former manor), partly in the Renaissance, partly in the Baroque style. Surrounded by a large park. Private property, can only be viewed from the outside.

- Ludinghausen (29 km southwest, 40 minutes by bus, line S90 every half hour) - Dreiburgstadt with Vischering Castle (picturesque Renaissance moated castle), Lüdinghausen Castle and Wolfsberg Castle.
- 65 Nordkirchen Castle, Nordkirchen, Castle 1 (30 km south of Münster, 9 km from Lüdinghausen, 6 km from Capelle train station). The "Westphalian Versailles" - magnificent baroque moated castle, surrounded by extensive gardens.

- Dülmen (30 km southwest, 20 minutes by train, RE every half hour) - mostly built after the Second World War, but some historical buildings and an extensive English landscape garden.
- Hamm (38 km southeast) - large city and traffic junction on the edge of the Ruhr area with Maximilianpark (large amusement park on the site of a former coal mine); largest Hindu temple in Germany.
- Recklinghausen (approx. 60 km southwest; 40 min by train, RE every half hour) - gate to Ruhr area; Compared to the other cities in the Ruhr area, only little destroyed in the war, therefore the inner city is in a very good condition. Location of the Ruhr Festival.

- Emsdetten (26 km northwest, 15 minutes by train, RE every half hour)
- Steinfurt (30 km northwest, half an hour by train, RB every hour) - historic old town in the OT Burgsteinfurt with moated castle and high school (Renaissance), Bagno park, Catholic parish church St. Nicomedes in the OT with high medieval Borghorster collegiate cross.
- Tecklenburg (40 km north) - Former seat of the count, known for its open-air festival. In the surrounding Tecklenburger Land there are other excursion destinations (e.g. Lengericher "Canyon").
- Rheine (41 km northwest, half an hour by train, RE every half hour) - 1000-year-old saltworks, medieval Bentlage monastery, churches, Carolingian Villa Reni
- Osnabrück (approx. 60 km northeast, 35 minutes by train, RB every hour) - next to Münster the second city of the Peace of Westphalia; Worth seeing old town with historic town hall, baroque castle, late Romanesque cathedral, Gothic parish church of St. Mary and remains of the city fortifications. Münster and Osnabrück are connected by the 79 km long “Friedensroute” cycle path. For example, you can ride your bike there and back by train in one day.
