Horstmar is a city in Münsterland.

background

A castle was built here in the 9th century and a town developed under its protection. The castle was destroyed in the Thirty Years War. A renewed upswing took place in the 19th to 20th centuries due to the local textile industry. The decline of this hit the city hard. Horstmar is known for its Burgmannshöfe, all of which come from the original castle complex. Since December 24th the place officially bears the title City of Burgmannshöfe.

Tourist Attractions

The former castle complex was blown up during the Thirty Years War. But five of the eight old Burgmannshöfe from the 11th century are still partially or completely preserved:

  • 1 Munsterhof - This courtyard served to secure the eastern city gate from which the side pillars are still preserved. The name of the two-wing building in the form of an angle comes from the Lords of Münster, who lived here from 1347 at the latest. The building in its current form has stood here since the middle of the 16th century.
  • 2 Merveldter Hof - Two wings of the three-wing building erected in 1561 are still standing. The special thing about this Burgmannshof is the facade of the side wing and the east gable. These are designed as a so-called bacon layer. Alternating layers of red and white stones in the masonry create a surface like a streaky side of bacon. The courtyard was the first building in Westphalia that was built in the form.
  • 3 Borchhorster Hof - The oldest Burgmannshof can be found in the southwest. The high stepped gables are particularly interesting.
  • 4 Sendenhof - The Sendenhof is directly connected to the castle gate, which is still completely preserved in its execution as a gate tower. The Schlossstrasse leads through the gate directly to the old town hall. At Sendenhof you can clearly see how the Burgmannshöfe were integrated into the castle wall and thus into the defense.
  • 5 Valkenhof - Parts of the current building still go back to the original courtyard. The building was restored in 2008. The original coat of arms of the Valkenhof from the 16th century on the outer facade is particularly worth seeing.

More Attractions:

  • 6 St. Gertrudis Church - The church dates back to the early 14th century.
  • 7 Old Town Hall - The old town hall was built in 1571 on the foundations of a previous building and has not been used as a town hall since 1963 but as a meeting room and wedding room
  • 8 House Alst - One of four castles in Horstmar stood here until 1624. When this was removed, the Alst house was built in its place. The sophisticated bacon layering technique that was used here is remarkable. Even small details such as chimneys have been built here using this technique.
  • 9 St. Antonius Abbot - Former chapel of the Antony Brotherhood. Some of the furnishings go back to the 15th century.
  • 10 Wenning's mill - Probably the oldest mill in Horstmar. Although it was first mentioned in a document in 1550, there are indications that there was a mill here as early as the 10th century.
  • 11 Wilmingsmühle - This mill is also called Schmeddings Mühle after the new owner. In the past, two water wheels each drove an oil mill and a grain mill. The necessary power was supplemented by a windmill.
  • 12 St. Cosmas and Damian - The church dates back to the 13th century. The branch crucifix from the same period is worth seeing.
