Altenberge is a city and municipality in Münsterland. The small towns of Entrup, Hansell, Hohenhorst, Kümper, Waltrup and Westenfeld are also part of it.

The first written mention of the place Altenberge can be found in the 12th century. Today the place is divided into the main municipality with six peasant communities. The place is quite agricultural. The Altenberg ridge offers a wonderful panoramic view of the Münsterland, the Baumberge up to the Teutoburg Forest. The area around the "Rösteberg" in the Hohenhorst farming community is under landscape protection and is located in a preferred recreational area. Well-developed circular hiking trails and farm roads invite you to extensive hikes, bike tours and covered wagon rides that lead past numerous sights. such as the ice cellar of the former Beuing brewery, the Heimathues Kittken (with storage and bakery) or the tractor and equipment museum

The B54, the Muenster above Steinfurt and Gronau (Westphalia) with the Netherlands connects goes through the place and represents the main traffic artery of the place. About the B54 you have access to the 10km away A1 via the Münster Nord intersection (exit 77).

Churches in Altenberge
St. John Baptist
  • 1 Catholic Parish Church of St. John Baptist - Parts of the walls date from the 14th century. The 75 meter high tower can be seen from afar.
  • 2 Catholic branch church St. Johannes Nepomuk - 18th century. At times this was the center of an independent parish.
  • 3 Krüsellinde - This tree, which is over 300 years old, is the symbol of Altenberge. It can also be found in the coat of arms.
  • 4  Ice cellar. The exact date of construction is unknown. The ice cellar, the former Beuing brewery, which used to be used to store ice cream, was only rediscovered in 1996 during construction work and is accessible via the Heumatverein.
  • 5  Heimathues Kittkenn. The half-timbered house from 1840 was restored by the local history association at the end of the 20th century. In 2003 the facility was expanded to include a typical regional storage facility and in 2006 to include a bakery.
